The animation & OST are the other protagonists of this heartfelt, beautiful story.

Emotionally raw, yeah that's a good descriptor. I love all the small things you can notice in this show, like how Luculia now takes off her hat before reaching the top of the tower, because it blew away when she was a child. In the previous episode the woman who wants the letter written, all her gestures and twirling her hair shows the contradiction in her words when she says she's not really interested. Small Non Spoiler Info Dump for if you plan on continuing. Watch Order Series Episodes: 1 - 4 OVA Episode: The Day You Understand "I Love You" Will Surely Come (This starts at an opera house so you know you're on the right one) The community generally agrees that this bridges the time gap between 4 and 5 better. Series Episodes: 5 - 13 Movie: Violet Evergarden: Eternity and the Auto Memory Doll Movie: Violet Evergarden: the Movie (Apparently this is an original non-canon but still great) Random Facts The Netflix version of the show runs a tiny bit faster than non Netflix version (feels like 0.15x) not a big deal, you don't miss anything The passing of time is not entirely clear through the series, by the end it has been a few years. Violet's age is never confirmed, it mentions an "Approximate" age, but she's a war orphan who was picked up by Gilbert's brother across war lines (ep 2) so she is revealed to be quite young, but likely is a bit older. Also I suspect war would mature someone a bit.. There is slight variation in the anime series compared to the source material, but I think that's pretty normal. If I think of more I'll add it later, I do hope you continue, it is a lovely series. Very emotional especially in the later half, but as you've said it's a different type of feeling compared to what you normally watch.
