Moin Gaz :) Just started to watch your reaction to this anime. Great job in the first episode. This anime is a funny one with a real background somehow. The two countries shown in the opening are Westalis and Ostania. Both existed for ~40 yrs after WW2. Westalis was the GFR and Ostania the GDR. Also the capital of Ostania is called Berlint. Just remove the t and you get ... ? CYA ;)
