Respectfully, I disagree. Erwin gave him warnings/hints days before the event; to put Nile's mind in the right framework when the time came. A reminder of where his (Nile's) family lives, how long it's been since he saw his family, a prediction about a choice needing to be made at a crucial moment- all gave Nile time to think leading up to the events of the announcement about the wall being breached.
If he hadn't had those warnings, and was reacting on the fly, just like in season 1, he would have been more likely to be influenced by the church of the wall and those in power and would have given the order to close the gates.
Erwin's gamble was on Nile as much as it was on Pyxis/Zackly/Levi/Eren/etc/etc

Hey Nile isn't THAT bad, he also stood up against the nobles when they were
judging Erwin, and withheld his men from closing the gates when they
fabricated the report on Wall Rose.

When Armin was talking about having to go along with the Jaegerists for now and such and Yelena made that angry face, it was because she realized that Armin was bullshiting her earlier when Armin was crying and "so moved and touched" when she explained the Euthanization Plan.

Finally! Nile did something useful!
Shadis again showing his worth!
So much tenseness going on. And, mostly at the time of reading this, I was wondering how Levi was doing. (similar to your deductions, I too assumed he was alive given Hange not allowing others near him, but with AOT one can never be too sure!) A YEAR!!! BTW! A YEAR! us readers had to wait to find out the captain's fate!

How was I feeling when I first watched this?
...I don't even know how I was feeling. All I knew in my head was that we needed to stop Eren and Zeke from whatever they were planning on doing.
(I actually never like LOVED Eren as a character, but I respected him and felt for him. I'm an empath so I feel for pretty much for everyone and everything they're going through 😆)
But like I said, when he attacked Marley and especially the civilians and the children and had no emotion what-so-ever on his face, I was like... no, either explain to me what you're doing right now and change back or... well... I don't want to say it so I'm not, but I feel like you can guess where I'm going with this 😅
Mikasa... man, I'm heartbroken for her. And for everyone who are in the Scouts and who were close with Eren. Just feeling that kind of betrayal... it still makes my blood boil when Savagery happened.
And Levi!!! I was very heartbroken and still am for that. He is on a shared number 1 place for the best male anime character in my book. (The other one is from Fairy Tail as you might guess 😂)
But seeing him get blown apart... I can't even begin to tell you the shock that I was in.
Man, I wish Isayama would've created more with Levi and Mikasa. Although they're like distant cousins(?), I still view them as like big brother and little sister, who hate each other, but love each other at the same time 😂
