A Mother's Desire - Chapter 4

Normal Evening (Part I)

Katie went downstairs and looked around the kitchen to see what she had available for dinner. She didn't cook every night, but did most nights, especially when both her kids were home for the evening. She texted her daughter Danielle to see if she would need a ride home while she looked around the pantry.

Katie: Are you in dance practice?

It took several minutes for Danielle to reply and while she waited Katie put together a grocery list.

Danielle: Yes! I'll be home in about an hour!

Katie: Don't need a ride home then?

Danielle: Nope! Vickie's mom said she'd take us home.

Katie: Sounds good. I'm making dinner tonight.

Danielle: Cool, I'll be home around 4!

Katie: Great

Katie finished her grocery list and and then made her way to the store. She only needed a few things so she popped in and out as quickly as she could manage. Then she got home a little after 3 and got started on dinner. She knew Danielle would be home soon, and didn't really want to eat too early so she took her time prepping the food rather than actually getting started on cooking. It wasn't long before she heard Danielle come running in.

"Hey mom!" She said as she entered the kitchen.

"Hello sweetheart, did you have a good day? And how was dance practice?" Katie asked.

"It was fine and dance is always fun. Do I have time to run and shower before dinner?" Danielle asked.

"I haven't even really started yet. When do you think you'll be hungry?"

Danielle looked thoughtful for a moment then replied, "Probably in an hour or two."

"Sounds good, do me a favor and let your brother know dinner will be ready in a little over an hour then." Katie told her daughter.

Katie spent the next hour watching tv in the living room before getting started on dinner. Once it was complete she called down her kids to eat. Daniellecame down first and joined Katie in the living room. Logan made his way down about 10 minutes later, but simply put together a plate and made his way back towards the stairs to go back up to his room.

"Don't feel like joining us?" Katie asked just before he made his escape.

Logan stopped looked only a little guilty and asked, "Do you mind if I just eat in my room tonight?.."

Katie thought for a moment and then smiled and said, "Sure honey, that's fine, just make sure you bring your plate down when you're done."

"Sure, thanks for dinner mom." Logan said making his way upstairs. "Yes, thank you for making dinner mom." Danielle chimed in, obviously just mirroring her brothers good manners, though Katie still appreciated the sentiment.

After a few minutes of eating in silence while they watched tv Danielle asked. "When does dad come home again?"

"Tomorrow evening, but then he's only home over the weekend and he's leaving again for a week." Katie replied sounding only a little sad.

"I wish he didn't travel so much.." Danielle said meekly, pushing her food around her plate, apparently no longer hungry.

"I know baby, me too. It does stink that he has to travel so much for work, but it's what allows us to live such a nice life here." Katie explained.

"I know mom.. it's just sucks is all." Danielle said with a defeated smile.

Katie returned her daughter's sad smile and simply said, "It does."

After they were finished eating Katie collected Danielle's plate and her own and brought them into the kitchen. She was about to start cleaning the dishes when Logan entered and said, "Got one more for you mom!" And set his own plate into the sink.

"You know, if you were a gentleman you would offer to do the dishes for your mother since I made dinner." Katie suggested with a smile.

Logan let out an annoyed sigh, but said, "Why don't you let me do the dishes mom.."

Katie laughed and said, "I was just messing around sweetheart, I don't mind doing them."

Though he still looked annoyed Logan replied, "No, it's fine mom. I got it."

"Thank you baby." Katie said with a proud smile. She then gave her son a quick peck on the cheek and made her way upstairs for the night.

Katie changed into a loose silk tank top and stripped out of her pants. She typically slept in either an outfit like this one, a simple top and a pair of panties, or sometimes would also put on a pair of loose fitting shorts. Then she wrapped herself in a large robe and went back out into the upstairs landing to wish her children a goodnight. When she stopped by Danielle's room she appeared to be texting her friends. They exchanged a quick goodnight and then Katiemoved onto Logan's room.

"Goodnight!" Katie called through his door which was closed once again.

"Goodnight mom!" Katie heard him call back. Satisfied, Katie went back to her room and laid down in bed. She texted her husband before going to bed.

Katie: Can't wait to see you tomorrow! I love you!

She waited a minute and felt happy to see that he responded so quickly.

Jeff: Yes, it'll be nice to get home. Even if it's only for the weekend. Love you too!

Katie: Find anyone good?

Jeff: Sure, I always do, but no one that fits the team in the timeline we're looking for unfortunately.

Katie: Aww darn, sorry babe. Well I'm going to sleep, just wanted to say goodnight.

Jeff: Goodnight babe, love you

Katie: Love you too

Katie leaned over, put her phone on the charger and then turned back and closed her eyes. Today had been a very normal day and admittedly Katieloved days like these. Nothing to cause excess worry. No drama at school for either of her children. Katie often wished every day was like this one, though she knew if that were the case life would end up being kind of boring. She knew something major was likely to come up eventually, it always did. She just hoped it wouldn't be something she and her family couldn't bare together.
