She should not have made this execution public. It made everything worse.

In regards to the Mad King stuff, I think it's important to remember that Dany's ultimate goal is to rule the seven kingdoms. Westeros still has a very sharp and painful memory of the things Dany's father did and the lengths he went to get "justice" and maintain his power. The things that Dany has been doing along the cities of Slaver's Bay is all getting back to Westeros and if she rules with an iron fist, they'll hear of it. I think Sir Barriston makes a good point in the ethical side but also the political one. If the major houses of Westeros associate Dany too strongly with the Mad King, they'll never support her and may even see her as a common enemy. Dany needs to be strong because you need to be severe to be an effective ruler and strategist (look at Tywin or Lady Olenna). But if she's too severe in order to keep Slaver's Bay in check, she'll be hurting her chances in Westeros. Dany was put in a hard spot in this one. There may have been a middle ground she didn't explore for either situation but there was no easy solution.

I forget which Targaryen king it was, but he legitimized all of his bastards on his deathbed, leading to the Blackfyre rebellion. Legitimizing bastards is easy for royalty to do, but the consequences can be dire. Daenerys' situation with the freed man who murdered the prisoner was a no-win scenario. If she had imprisoned him, the formerly enslaved people would have understood, but the wealthy and the Sons of the Harpy from lower stations would have been angry, seeing it as a miscarriage of justice. It would've created more Harpies. Imprisoning the formerly enslaved murderer also would have created a precedent that people who were never enslaved could've used to essentially get away with murder. They could say, "You imprisoned that 'slave', so you can only send our murderer to prison. You can't execute our people, because you didn't execute the people you freed." In those cases, the freed people would be furious, seeing THAT as a miscarriage of justice. Every option is bad. At least in executing the formerly enslaved murderer, people can't claim she's a hypocrite when she sentences former masters, Sons of the Harpy, etc to death.
