2025-10-28 11:53:01 +0000 UTCB first watch C for rewatch. I don't understand why the Prime Directive is misunderstood. It's an imperfect law made by man. Once it's broken they have a hard time following it. Worf's brother broke it by getting personally involved with a woman, so everything after is a continuation of that. Letting his child to be die is probably against the law as well. The solution isn't kill the fetus and mother.

2025-10-27 22:12:32 +0000 UTCAs for the notion that the Prime Directive always sucks, I do think it gets applied in a ham-handed way due to bad writing, but the actual concept is a solid one, and you see a much better take on it in "Who Watches the Watchers". Can you imagine what the fallout would be if aliens landed on modern day Earth? Even if you ignore the politics of it, the world would go mad. And our society is a lot more developed than the ones we're looking at in "Homeward" and Who "Watches the Watchers". I also think that an important facet of the Prime Directive is keeping the Federation from exploiting less-developed civilizations. Even if intentions are initially good, that's the sort of thing you can back into, and not everyone in the Federation is equally virtuous. So I think the Prime Directive is a good rule; it just gets misapplied.

2025-10-27 19:26:02 +0000 UTCI struggled rating this one. I ultimately gave it a B, because I think it's flawed, but I probably enjoy it as much as an A. The premise of the story is interesting, and I like the interaction between Worf and his brother, but I think it's a bad take on the Prime Directive, at least in terms of how ready they are to shrug off the extinction of the people without trying their damdest to come up with a solution. The point of the Prime Directive is to protect less developed cultures, but how protected is a culture that's dead? I'm down for hard choices, but the execution of this one just feels lazy, and Picard doesn't agonize nearly enough before dismissing the plight of the people. Also, Nicoli being able to set up the holodeck and secretly beam everybody aboard stretches credibility. I also felt like the actually journey in the holodeck felt a bit background at times, and I would've sacrificed some of the Worf-Nicoli drama (even though it was good) to get more focus on that adventure, and the problems they faced. I did quite enjoy the episode, but I think it could've been fine-tuned into an A, and quite possibly an S.
