Got a chance to watch. Glad you enjoyed it. Always get a little worried we could wind up in another Red October situation. Definitely, it's that main trio that sells the movie, and all the random(and somehow interconnected) encounters that keep you engaged. A lot of scenes I do tend to revisit on YT from time to time, like the cornbread shootout or the scene where he rides at then 4 on 1. The Coen brothers signature is all over the style of this movie. As for why he shot the horse, while it's never stated on screen, the most common explanation I've seen given is that he rode the horse to the point where it was having a heart attack, and would have died a painful death anyway, so he was putting it out of it's misery. I did wonder on this watch why they didn't use Ned's horse which was just standing there over his body? I guess Mattie wouldn't have been able to ride in her condition, and the river crossing scene did establish that Blackie was a strong horse and therefore the best choice. Still, LeBeouf could have taken it. And it's funny you mention Saving Private Ryan since the guy who played Ned(Barry Pepper) also played the sniper(Jackson) in that movie. In my head I think of him being much older in this movie than SPR, but there was actually only 12 years between those films, and True Grit is now 15 years ago. Where does the time go?
