UNCUT - The Expanse Season 1 Episodes 6-8

Comments

Since I see no one mentioned this, the scene where uncle Mateo opens his helmet in vacuum to remove a shorting wire is the show making you unlearn bad sci-fi tropes. Brief vacuum exposure is non fatal. You can google "NASA vaccum chamber accident" where a guy is exposed to vacuum for like 20 seconds during an experiment. He recovered shortly after.

Aldo Cassola

Okay. Than I missed that.

Sam Langanke

Amos made the paintjob after they left Tycho station, they renamed the Tachi to Rocinante before arriving there. If you meant that?

Florian

I thought about this so many times and I‘m still not sure. But I am sure that Holden would do a lot to spare innocent lives, especially with all the guilt from the Cant.

Florian

It‘s up to the Bridge Crew Members. My vote is set for S2 :D

Florian

Really enjoying the ride so far guys. You seem really locked into the story and characters. I haven't seen this show in a few years and I partly forgot just how good it is. Without saying too much, season 2 is even better. I have a hard time thinking the bridge crew wouldn't opt for S2, but it'll be a huge loss if they do.

Timothy Nikiforovs

The poll will be posted on Patreon on Tuesday. It will be open for a day.

Josh (Target Audience)

Josh how long will the voting be open on Discord, for those in the Bridge crew who work when you have it?

Mark Wood

This is my favorite episode of the season. One because it ties almost everything together and the great atmospheric moments. But most people disagree with me. We got the next two episodes as single release like a tv movie which was awesome, when it originally aired on scifi.

Mark Wood

As do I. I can't see them NOT continuing with it. Especially since some of the greatest characters in Sci Fi are introduced in the next season.

Monty Crawford

I really hope you guys continue this series.

Boggle

Would Holden have shot Amos? I thank the answer is yes. Holden is at heart a moral person. Holden knows that they are doing illegal activity. And that Amos is planning to execute two people who are innocent. So really the only question in my mind is at what point would he pull the trigger. Would he wait until Amos fires off a round? Or would he want until the last moment before the airlock opened?

Mark Wood

Seriously up to this point Holden is absolutely not playing the hero. He's playing a moral person. When he refuses to leave the crew, and puts himself in harms way to try and save them thats not playing the hero, thats being a moral person. It's also taking consequences for his actions. Releasing statements telling the system what happened (and more importantly not relayed by Mars, but by an Earther who is also now a Belter leader) is him taking responsibility to cool down tension in the system that his 100% factually accurate statement might have inflamed. Letting Amos and Alex know why he wants to crew with Freds people, is him taking responsibility for his action in episode one, just as him telling Naomi in episode 1 is also doing that. And not executing local security forces for simply doing their job, when Holden knows they are covertly breaking the law, and allowing them the chance to arrest them is facing the consequences of his actions. Holden and crew are driving into a restricted area, knowingly breaking the law, and the police pull him over. Is the proper actions to execute the cops who are simply doing their job, when you are the one breaking the law? No facing the consequences of your actions is allowing yourself to be arrested. Thats facing the consequences. Holden has no knowledge that his search for answers will provide anything to the greater good of the system (This is his first to date action that one might call a heroic quest). Holden took action already to cool the system down, from the public being inflamed by his statement. Him doing that through Fred is likely far more impactful than him actually doing it directly to Mars. As Earth and the Belt might assume it's coerced. A former Earth Military leader, and now Belter leader releasing that statement one that puts Mars in s good light? Thats not something that the Belt or Earth would normally be seen doing thus not something they would likely coerce someone to release. So when they live Tycho, Holden has faced and dealt with eh consequences of his actions. And his not being ok to premeditated murder on innocent people, even if its gets him into serious trouble absolutely is taking consequences for his illegal actions.

Mark Wood

It's curious how characters are interpedently assessed based on their environment. If you put Picard into the same position as Holden, he'd have made the same calls, more or less. He'd have logged the distressed beacon. Negotiated with Fred and the Martians similarly. And definitely would have opposed killing the Martian boarding party, as they were simple soldiers who had no moral culpability either way. Sure, Picard would have more tact and diplomatic skill, but morally speaking Holden is right in line with him. Being a righteous diplomat is so much more challenging, and from the outside can even seem irritating, when you don't live in Paradise.

Paul

Didn't they rename the Rocinante on flight? How can it be that this name is painted across the ship in giant letters?

Sam Langanke

Great to see you really getting into this

AzoriusMage

Come on Bridge Crew, you know what you have to do! If I hadn't dropped so much $$$ with recently moving states, I would join. Maybe once I get my job here going full time.

Ricky

I've only seen two of the episodes, and I don't remember if this is explained in the season or not, but Amos and Naomi are not together. But Amos has no moral compass personally. He's something of a sociopath, and he knows this, so he hooks his morality to someone, and in this case, it's Naomi. She does the right thing (in his eyes) and so he backs her plays.

John

Fuck it, I might join you there

Worf and Riker Ride Again

I never noticed this in the first watch, sooooo many details in every scene!

Worf and Riker Ride Again

Bridge Crew...We count on you...Stay away from the Aqua, Sabaka!

Gold Wing

You asked what could be worse than being in a mine on an asteroid. How about finding clowns in the mine on an asteroid? Also, about the memory card in Detective Millers hat. Miller noticed Dawes getting close to finding the chip in his hat, which is why Miller said to him, "why don't you try it on? It's big enough for your head." Miller was trying to distract Dawes from searching the hat any further, and it worked.

Ricky

Actually, I wasn't considering the narrative structure of the next episode. I think you may be correct. Hopefully it's not too late. I'll delete. That's my bad.

Aaron Wells

Everything I said has already happened. It's already been on screen. There were no spoilers...

Aaron Wells

one thing you can do to help you remember characters is go to imdb - dont look at the master cast list of the show - but go to the episode lists and to the specific episode you are on and look at the cast list... that can help put a name to the face without spoiling anything for you.

penoyer79

(Removed. Just in case.)

Wes Chatham, the guy who plays Amos: You might notice when he's holding a gun he's holding it correctly, instead of Hollywood nonsense style. (As former military, this sort of thing jumps right out at me. ) The actor was US Navy, a Petty Officer who served on the USS Essex. So he brings at least some level of authenticity to these aspects of the show. Most shows are like nails on a chalkboard when it comes to that kind of thing.

Aaron Wells

Interesting tidbit about Belter culture: You'll notice they often have various tattoos ringed around their necks with a pair of points of different shapes...this represents the burn marks left on the skin of older belters from the cheap helmets they were given during the colonization of the Belt. The old suits would often short out and leave distinctive burn marks on the skin...and it became symbolic for people who's lineage worked in space. In the beginning the shot with the belter opening his helmet while working outside is meant to illustrate basically how badass these people are when it comes to living and working in space. They understand exactly the danger hard vaccuum poses, and they live with it and work with it rather than completely avoid it. Sort of like an old mechanic who will literally taste motor oil off the dipstick to judge something about the conditions inside the engine. I love those little details.

Aaron Wells

The vote will be posted to Patreon next week after the UNCUT reaction to the last two episodes goes up

Josh (Target Audience)

About the chip from Lopez, they said it's a real time tactical record of the battle between the Donager and the attacking stealth ships. Cpt. Yao gave Lopez the chip so he can find out who attacked them with the drive scans. I will join the Bridge Crew right now to vote for season 2! I wanted to see how invested you guys get and I'm beyond satisfied compared to the first time watching episode 1 ;-) Edit: Is the vote on Patreon? And if so, is it already up?

Florian

yeah theres several 'blink and you miss it' things going on in season 1. i think later seasons do a better job being sure the audience understands who/what is going on

TivAcrid

L.O.V.E. this S%#@! Please, please, please bridge crew... Let them watch season 2!!

Jason Lallathin

So just to clarify as its easy to miss, the kid whose uncle threw him out the airlock is named Diogo and hes the same kid Miller let go after catching him stealing water.
