This is a bit of a rehash of "First Contact" where the main scientist cannot be confined to her world after she discovers a bigger one, and the potential societal impact of the contact with the Enterprise. Only here, instead of it being quietly buried under layers of top secret classifications, the society has to deal with the fallout of an event they couldn't contain.

2025-03-01 04:48:42 +0000 UTCOne good thing about this episode is that they don't go the predictable route of being unable to solve the external problem and forced to evacuate for BS reasons, instead they do solve the problem and instead have to deal with the consequences of making the only real choice they had. Giving it a B. Also, Poor Martin, genetically designed and raised his entire life to be every party's buzzkill.
Mr Moxie
2025-01-21 16:33:28 +0000 UTCI loved this episode. I suspect some will find it dull, but I loved the exploration of moral issues. If you remove all the flaws, and consider someone disabled a problem, you eventually lose big. This perfect society was its own ruin. The “flaw” ended up being the solution. I just love this. I’d say “boo” to Troi being so unprofessional as to have a relationship with the guy, but…Riker. Riker’s inability to keep his pants on led to them almost losing everything a few episodes ago. So I can’t be too tough on Troi. Great character and morality play episode.

2025-01-17 17:05:04 +0000 UTCMid, but I do enjoy the morale tale about genetic engineering/selection.

2025-01-16 01:54:33 +0000 UTCC. I don't hate it but it's pretty boring and forgettable.
Phillip Grischa
2025-01-15 12:40:33 +0000 UTCGeneric 'problem of the week' filler episode with some haphazard morality stapled to it. 'C'.

2025-01-15 08:52:08 +0000 UTCWhen I have trouble sleeping this is the episode I put on.

2025-01-15 03:02:53 +0000 UTCI always enjoy Dey Young whatever she's in. She's my favorite part of this episode, and for her I give it a B.
Michael Metrick
2025-01-14 21:38:15 +0000 UTCThis is one of those "interesting ideas, not really explored and boringly executed in the episode". This is the 5th "it's just okay" episode in a row for me.
Ian Westcott
2025-01-14 20:45:27 +0000 UTCI couldn’t remember this episode at all so rewatched it about a week ago. I’ve since forgotten most of it again, which doesn’t bode well… the idea is fine but it doesn’t really explore it well, and I really don’t care about the characters on the planet. Solid D for me
Worf and Riker Ride Again
2025-01-14 18:20:08 +0000 UTCI have no recollection of this episode at all, so I'm eager to rewatch it with you all. I wonder if there's a reason why it's etched in my brain to just skip.
#MaxwellDidNothingWrong
2025-01-14 17:58:30 +0000 UTCWhen I was a young kid and I watched episodes of TNG, I felt impressed by how "adult" some episodes felt. And by "adult" I mean quiet, slow, and boring. This episode encapsulates that. I'm sure it's a lot better than this take implies, and I could go back and watch it on my own to remind myself, but I'm frankly too uninspired to do so. I'm not even going to give it a rating~

2025-01-14 13:57:04 +0000 UTCBad Prime Directive. Caught in a Bad Romance. "D"
T’Pynyn of Vulcan
2025-01-14 06:28:47 +0000 UTCAt least there are no 10 second long foot shots in this ep.
Ramen Nudels
2025-01-14 06:11:39 +0000 UTCOkay episode. This guy does seem to fit Troi's "type" (except Riker doesn't seem to be in that category of type....at least not bearded grizzly Adams Riker).

2025-01-14 03:41:13 +0000 UTCFor me the best part of this episode is Geordi pointing out how on this planet he never would have been born because he was “defective” but ultimately he helps save the world that would have rejected his existence. And Deanna almost falls in love...again. I rank this one as “Time Filler With Good Moments”.
KatWithAttitude
2025-01-14 03:19:44 +0000 UTCThis is possibly the strangest Prime Directive episode yet. Picard takes a very hard to understand position at the end of this. Obeying the Prime Directive meant all those people would be dead. What was the problem?
Nerd's Gold
2025-01-14 02:58:32 +0000 UTCDid anyone else say “yes” when the Prime Minister asked if he was making the colony sound incredibly dull?
Matthew McKinnon-Gray
2025-01-14 01:54:57 +0000 UTCI enjoy this episode more than most. Its intriguing premise involves a society forced to change due to circumstances beyond its control. A mirror is forced upon the colony, and they're forced to inspect whether they are as perfect as they seem. They're not bad people but must endure and change to survive. Troi gets wrapped up in the emotion and makes a potential mistake, but she owns up to it. I like the chemistry between Geordi and Hannah. It's nothing groundbreaking and may drag at times, but overall, it's a solid episode.
Justin B
2025-01-14 01:38:28 +0000 UTCIt's a "B" for me, but I, too, enjoy this one more than many others.
Justin B
2025-01-14 01:27:15 +0000 UTCEnjoy with a weighted blanket and a glass of warm milk. Not even interesting enough to be an E.
Pokeysaurus
2025-01-14 00:38:00 +0000 UTC"B" is fair for this one. I just happen to have a huge soft spot for it. Hits all the right buttons for me, albeit not an "all-time great" (S) or anything.
Lovok
2025-01-13 23:41:24 +0000 UTCThis episode started as a D for me and climbed all the way to a C! I do wish they spent less time on the asteroid story and more on the almost prime directive plot.
Sixto
2025-01-13 23:38:05 +0000 UTCI never saw these people as next-generation Khans. They treat their genetic codes as a destiny and use them to build a societal jigsaw puzzle. Not very realistic in real science, but it's a worthy subject for an episode.

2025-01-13 23:35:52 +0000 UTCSave Riker....?

Jovet
2025-01-13 23:29:48 +0000 UTCI don't hate this one as much as some people seem to be commenting. It's a sound premise as far as people who want no contact with outsiders but are in mortal peril. The "genetic purity" thing doesn't hold water in my science book. Troi's lack of professional detachment is problematic for her character. It doesn't sound like that great of a great society if poeple have to be forced to remain and if any want to actually leave.
Jovet
2025-01-13 23:29:15 +0000 UTCMartin was right. (They should have all just gone extinct.)

2025-01-13 23:26:02 +0000 UTCI don't even remember this, frankly I think when I watch the reaction it might be my first ever view, haha - or I've seen it 4 times and it's just that lame.

2025-01-13 22:57:35 +0000 UTCSo very- meh. I always skip this in rewatches, so maybe you can find something good that I forgot.

2025-01-13 22:45:18 +0000 UTCSoooooooo booooooooooring. Unwatchable.

2025-01-13 21:56:38 +0000 UTCIt's like yawning, but longer.
Paul Sage
2025-01-13 21:03:07 +0000 UTCAnother Troi-focused episode, which generally means it's not a good episode. Why do she and Beverly get all the worst scripts? (I know why, but it's an unfortunate truth that women get all the bad stories. Wonder if things would have been different if Tasha had survived.) The ideas are somewhat interesting, so it's a C for me, but that might be a bit high.
John
2025-01-13 19:17:52 +0000 UTCWow, looking at everyone else's comments, this is apparently one of the few TNG episodes where I am far more favorable than the crowd. "A" for me! Great concept, great guest cast, rich and increasingly relevant themes, excellent script that honestly explores the pros & cons of such a society, and some powerful emotional beats (e.g. Troi accepting responsibility for her error in judgment to Picard and Geordi acknowledging the irony of tech in his VISOR being part of the solution). This is one of my "hidden gems" of TNG, clearly underrated IMHO.
Lovok
2025-01-13 18:58:15 +0000 UTCZzzzzzz. The only redeeming thing about this episode is more screen time for Troi/Marina Sirtis. Definition of a C episode for me.
Collin Freeman
2025-01-13 18:58:05 +0000 UTCI thought the concept was more interesting than the episode itself, so I'm going with a C.
Forbidden Donut
2025-01-13 18:33:39 +0000 UTCThis is a meh episode
Troy
2025-01-13 18:08:21 +0000 UTCJust a blah C for me, but you’re not missing anything if you Erased from canon either… I blame the writing for the Prime Minister‘s dull performance since the actor is the same guy who played the Romulan trapped on the planet with Geordie in The Enemy, which was well written and well acted by him imho :)
Andrewski 2112
2025-01-13 18:05:37 +0000 UTCYou mean season 5?
Nolan
2025-01-13 17:27:28 +0000 UTCIt's a good concept, and it's not a terrible episode, but the biggest flaw is that the leader of the colony has absolutely no charisma.
Steven Linden
2025-01-13 17:21:30 +0000 UTCD - skip. Boring to the point of irrelevance.
The Ninth Doctor
2025-01-13 17:16:19 +0000 UTCTroi falls for another smarmy guy. This episode is no Masterpiece. D for Dull.
Nolan
2025-01-13 17:07:54 +0000 UTCWell atleast the stretch of boring is over after this one. D
Phil Ken Sebben
2025-01-13 16:27:15 +0000 UTCMeh. The guy playing Prime Minister is dull. It drags the whole episode down.
tyranusfan
2025-01-13 16:03:36 +0000 UTCGod this episode bored me, nice to see a Troi episode but still this is just dull. D
Darren Seal
2025-01-13 15:27:39 +0000 UTCThis episode plays better having watched it for the first time in 30 years. The idea of a society that prevents poets from becoming bricklayers is certainly intriguing. How many Einsteins have been lost because they weren’t properly guided. An excellent guest cast, and finally a Troi episode which is a strong story for the character. The ending scene has always bothered me, as if the episode ended mid-sentence. B for “breach ain’t there…”
Column Meanie
2025-01-13 15:07:40 +0000 UTCWhat’s that squelching sound? It’s the sound of my boots stuck in this bland, beige Season 5 mud. Can someone get me out?
Jon1701
2025-01-13 15:03:37 +0000 UTC🥱 D for me
Ron Hubbard Jr
2025-01-13 14:58:18 +0000 UTCAnother episode that shows that Star Trek writers absolutely didn't understand Roddenberry's conception of the Prime Directive. It was supposed to be about anti-colonialism, not about not helping people who needed help.
Aramis Calcutt
2025-01-13 14:52:15 +0000 UTCYawn. This one is a D tier for me. The abundance of below average episodes like this is why I think season 4 is massively overrated. The guest actor and Troi have zero chemistry for starters. The actual plot is just boring and badly executed. Just turn this one on if you're having trouble getting to sleep.
Spencer Loften
2025-01-13 14:48:57 +0000 UTCIt's a Star Trek episode!
Alexander McKechnie
2025-01-13 14:44:02 +0000 UTCC tier for me! Great idea executed badly.
General Trelane
2025-01-13 14:37:38 +0000 UTCI like this one. Nothing spectacular, but a typical mid-level TNG episode. I think it's the start of a pretty solid run of episodes after a run of bad to mediocre ones.
Joe Concepts
2025-01-13 14:24:47 +0000 UTCOne taste of the Geordi rizz and they lose all inhibition…
Evan Guthrie
2025-01-13 14:20:57 +0000 UTCWhat I like: Everyone is acting with good intent and things still go wrong. What I don't like: Troi yet again falls for a guest star. The whole episode is low energy. Not a fan of the guest stars
Jeffrey
2025-01-13 14:19:45 +0000 UTCIt's a Star Trek episode. C.
Gruzz
2025-01-13 14:15:24 +0000 UTCDeanna has dreadful taste in men.
Paul Rymer
2025-01-13 14:12:15 +0000 UTCThis episode is okay, but it was a bit dull. C for me.
Keith S
2025-01-13 14:11:27 +0000 UTCAnother so-so episode in execution, but brilliant concept. I did love the more sciency part/core fragment part of the story - the rest was a touch lackluster. However I do always enjoy an angle of "this is why we should not interfere."
Ben Smith
2025-01-13 14:06:18 +0000 UTCA story about a group of people who practice eugenics, written by James KAAAHHHNNNNN!? It's a pretty dull episode for my tastes. Not terrible, just forgettable. John Snyder previously played Centurion Bochra, the Romulan that Geordi was trapped on the planet with in The Enemy.
Timothy Nikiforovs
2025-01-13 14:06:12 +0000 UTCI usually skip this one when watching the series. Maybe you guys and your reaction will compel me to watch. You guys do see things in episodes that I don't.
Darin Wagner
2025-01-13 14:06:07 +0000 UTCIt’s pretty bland and with kind of a season 2/early season 3 vibe. I kinda like it tho. In a bore yourself to sleep sort of way. 🥱
rear adm. crackbiscuit
2025-01-13 13:58:10 +0000 UTCThis episode always feels like some Elon Musk nonsense. "Oh, Khan? Yes, wildly unsafe. But what we have here is us doing the same thing, without permission, and it turned out great! Pay no attention to the opinions of the workers here!"
Ross Townsend
2025-01-13 13:56:23 +0000 UTCI really do like the questions that come up in this episode, and the characters are all interesting and well acted. I just wish Deanna was used more than, oops, time for her to fall in love with a random stranger. Again.
Thomas Cole
2025-01-13 13:56:22 +0000 UTCDid we learn nothing from the genetic engineering going on around oh say the late 20th century.?
