UNCUT - A Christmas Carol (1999) Starring Patrick Stewart

Comments

I love this version of a Christmas Carol, but my favorite (and my favorite Christmas movie) is Scrooged with Bill Murray. Perfect update of the story for the "greed is good" 1980's. Anyway, great reaction guys, and Merry Christmas to you!

This is probably my second favorite version of Christmas Carol behind only Muppet Christmas Carol. But I have to say that Patrick's performance was great in this.

Jarod Cain

I literally just watched this a day or 2 before it popped up here as I taped it off of TV. I also recently watched Patrick Stewart's Moby Dick, which he did a couple years after that certain Star Trek piece where Moby Dick is brought up. As far as other favorite versions of a Christmas Carol, is Mickey's Christmas Carol (Mickey Mouse) Disney managed to stay pretty close to the source material, with Mickey as Bob, Scrooge McDuck as Scrooge, and even Donald as Scrooge's Nephew. Need to go back and watch it again, I think Goofy was Marley. I believe its available on Disney Plus

Nathan Cline

I have not seen many shows on Broadway, but I got to see Stewart perform this as a one-man play when it ran on Broadway in the 90s. One of the best performances I've ever seen.

Max Shenk

I watched this last year. It felt a bit fragmented to me in how it told the story. Maybe adapting from the one man show made that unavoidable.

Numinous2019

In the book the ghost of Christmas past is described as being sometimes clear and sometimes very distant and out of focus like memory often is. This is one of the few versions that shows this, making him blurry at times, with the effect constantly changing... One of the things I really like about this version.

Stevtrek

I agree

Collin Freeman

Patrick did a one man show of Christmas Carol in the early 90s. If I’m not mistaken he got inspired by the scene in Devil’s Due, and did the play during the summer breaks.

tyranusfan

I think my favorite version of this is still the Disney one with Scrooge McDuck. 😁

tyranusfan

I loved Exorcist 3. Such a great creepy movie. Underrated

Picard "I wanted to show you such tenderness" Scrooge "I wanted someone to show me some tenderness...........but not at that price"

I rate this as the best Christmas Carol adaptation, even if it is not perfect. The Sims version is good, but at times suffers because of some of the idiosyncrasies of 1950s era film-making and in particular 1950s era acting. The Scott version is very highly regarded by most but I think it's one of my less favorite versions. It has too many elements that really scream "made in 1985" for as timeless a story as a Christmas Carol. The Ghost of Christmas past may be the most notable example, but there are others. I also think it *really* hurts the film to have the spirits showing such open contempt for Scrooge, especially Christmas Present, who is supposed to represent all the good and joyfulness and charity of Christmas. Some people say this is their favorite part, but to me it hurts the final product immeasurably. The Muppet version would be #1 if it weren't that it was a Muppet film. There is NOTHING wrong with the Muppets and the film itself is great, but nevertheless it puts this version in to a somewhat different category from a straight take on Dickens' classic. Patrick Stewart's version is overall very strong and of course Stewart himself is excellent. Its greatest weakness is that it really needs to give more attention to Tiny Tim. Its greatest strength, other than Stewart's performance, is the Christmas Day/post-conversion portion, which is I think by a very, very wide margin the best take on this part of the story out of any. The two highlights of this part for me are that it's the only adaptation I'm aware of where Scrooge actually goes to church on Christmas Day and that Stewart's post-conversion Scrooge feels very realistic in how he still hesitates a bit at the good deeds and has to remind himself to do the good that he learned, etc. He doesn't just have an easy time as though he's been good forever - he has to work his way into it even though he knows it's right.

When this popped up on here, it genuinely felt like a surprise Christmas present. I remember my mom and I tuning into this on TNT back in the day because we heard Patrick Stewart was gonna be Scrooge. It's now family tradition to watch this version, It's a Wonderful Life and a Christmas Story on Christmas day

Deep Red

Yeah Alistair sim is my favorite, with a close second the muppet one with Micheal Caine think it's really underated. Patricks version is ok thou his audio recording where he does all the characters is outstanding thou

You're going to love it. It's a made for TV movie but it doesn't look like it. And also, Susannah York, the woman who played Superman's birth mother in the Christopher Reeve version, plays Mrs. Cratchit.

KatWithAttitude

George C. Scott in the exorcist 3 is one of my favorite performances, now I’m hearing he played Scrooge?!? Adding to the list! - Alex

Josh (Target Audience)

Yeah he really loves the story. I bet he was excellent! I wish I had seen it.

PIG

that being said i do watch this one every year around christmas time, its personally Favorite take on this story i remember watching it live on tv when it aired every year.

GamingHour2018

The Ghost of Christmas Past is Academy Award winner (Best Supporting Actor for Cabaret in 1972) Joel Grey, father of Jennifer Grey who starred in Dirty Dancing among other things.

KatWithAttitude

My favorite version is the George C. Scott version. His Scrooge just seems to enjoy being, well, a Scrooge. I have that, this one, and the Alistair Sim version in my collection, but I watch the Scott the most.

KatWithAttitude

We watch the Sim and Muppets version every year, and Bill Murray Scrooged about every five years.

C

I do understand the connection with STAR TREK, but I would consider the 1951 Alistair Sims or the 1984 George C Scott versions more recommended.

andrew mccormick

The musical Scrooge with Albert Finney is my all time fave

Blu Holbein

Oh yea, and he had the entire script memorized.

James Baloun

We were fortunate to see Patrick perform the one-man show Christmas Carol at Foothill College near Stanford. With a few simple props, and his voice and actions, you could hear an see the story as if you were watching a full play. Also he was performing the unabridged full story.

James Baloun

Exactly my thoughts as I was watching it the other night.

David Wayne Fox

OMG I was hoping you guys would watch this! I just watched it the other day and felt like it was like watching a holodeck episode ... Looking forward to enjoying it with you guys.

David Wayne Fox

Great minds think alike

Josh (Target Audience)

Gee, what a great idea. : )

Tom Occhipinti

i am still not convinced that this isnt a holodeck program ran by picard XD

Spirit," said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before. "Tell me if Tiny Tim will live." "I see a vacant seat," replied the Ghost, "in this poor chimney corner, and a crutch, without an owner, carefully preserved. The child will die." "No no," said Scrooge. "Oh no, kind Spirit! Say he will be spared." "None other of my race," returned the Ghost, "will find him here. What then? If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population." Scrooge hung his head to hear his own words quoted by the Spirit, and was somewhat overcome with penitence and grief. "Man!" said the Ghost, "if man you be in heart; not adamant; forbear that wicked cant until you have discovered What the surplus is, and Where it is. Will you and such as you decide what men shall live, what men shall die! It may be, that in the sight of Heaven, you are more worthless and less fit to live than millions like this poor man's child. Oh God, to hear the Insect on the leaf, pronouncing on the too much life among his hungry brothers in the dust!"

Zack

Nice choice of the various versions out there. This and the Muppets version are my go to for Christmas.

Dru Blood

Awesome! Can’t wait to check this out!

Michael Papak

Hey! I watch this every year. The dialog is pretty true to the book including my favorite quote....
