TRAILER REACTION - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Target Audience does a trailer reaction in 2024!?!?!?

Comments

SAME!

Murtaugh

Before this first aired I had so many scenarios about Commander Sela running in my head..It was insane. None of them went back to Yesterday's Enterprise...

Alexandra Shepiro

Ah good, that makes me feel better. I didn't even realize you could still do mono mode from a stereo or better audio source lol. (Still nothing quite like a photon torpedo literally passing through your head though :D) Been so long since I watched this movie end to end, can't wait.

Matt Newmark

That’s not correct, it is on mono meaning we both hear everything.

Josh (Target Audience)

I still remember when I was like 6, parents got me this, the last TOS movie I was missing on VHS at the time. Was a great day. (This was before DVDs and all the TNG movies were out.

SetsunaYuki

We're starting to get into the age of high-quality sound (The TNG are in 5.1 as it is) and you two are still listening not only in mono but in half mono. I'm constantly chuckling when I hear a sound coming from the right speaker knowing the one of you on the right side of my screen literally can't hear it. ST VI though - you both deserve to hear it in all it's glory!

Matt Newmark

This is what a trailer in a long running franchise should be like. Obviously for most movies you have to show SOMETHING to get people interested, but it's not necessary here. All they need to tell us is that this is one last adventure with the crew we know and love. It's one last look back before the end. It just works

Timothy Nikiforovs

In a galaxy ...

Collin Freeman

They are doing the Theatrical cut for Vi.

Collin Freeman

Forgive me if this has been asked elsewhere, but are you guys watching the Theatrical cut of 6 over the Directors Cut? In my opinion, the Directors Cut in this case is not as good as the Theatrical.

Ca$hWednesday

My favourite teaser/trailer of all time, glad you watched it. Been a while since I've watched this myself and the goosebumps returned in force for it

Alex Ooiue

Wonder if we’ll see a recurrence of the less-popular Version 2, where Alex just says, “We’re done.”

James H

When you watch the movie try to spot the redressed TNG sets and not obvious ones like the transporter room or sickbay which served the same function but the ones that were used as a completely different locations.

Phillip Grischa

It's awesome that the trailer reveals NOTHING about Star Trek 6. Are you guys ready for the last ride? CAN'T WAIT.

Juan Tutrífor

My personal favourite Star Trek movie ^-^

JHVJ

If we never stopped doing it, it wouldn’t be the “classic” intro 😏

Josh (Target Audience)

I camped outside of the theatre over night for twelve-plus hours in a blizzard to be first in line for Trek VI. Had sleeping bags, a Coleman stove and battery operated socks to keep my feet warm. Almost got run over by a sidewalk snowplough. It was worth every second of freezing my ass off. You’re in for a real treat.

Jonathan Llyr

Ah, the classic TA intro and outro, that takes me back. Why'd you stop doing that anyway?

Jeff Cornell

Either this trailer revealed nothing, or it reveals everything because ST:VI is actually a 'Shades of Gray' clip show.

Column Meanie

I was so ready for this movie, Although TNG was growing on me, I was and always will be a TOS fan. Also Kirk was always the winner in the Kirk Vs Picard who is the better captain debate at this point.

Quacer Productions

I’ve always loved this teaser! Gives me chills.

Philbot

This was something to see on the big screen.

Mark Chrisco

Like you do with TNG episode teasers, you should watch the full trailer after you watch the movie.

JGoss

Unless there's an anamorphic lens, movies shot on film were still shot with a 4x3 ratio. They were either hard matted (where the top and bottom of the frame are blocked off during filming) or soft matted, where it's shot full frame and then cropped later, such as by the projectionist. There are a lot of film scans out there from an open matte, like Back to the Future, which is like 1.15:1, nearly a square. Lots of visible boom mics!

JGoss

If you can get me a great lawyer then we’ll see

Josh (Target Audience)

Sorry, I don't watch videos at work, I work.

MrDeadstu

"In A World..."

Michael Nemo

Tell us you didn’t watch the teaser by telling us you didn’t watch the teaser.

Column Meanie

That’s right!

Josh (Target Audience)

They are watching the theatrical version (IMHO the far superior version)

Column Meanie

I own it on VHS, we will be watching it!

Josh (Target Audience)

Oh very nice! Its odd that the trailer was made in 4:3 ratio! But yeah can definitely see more in this version.

Column Meanie

I don't mind saying I was misty seeing this trailer. A good idea to track scenes of the show and movies over the shot of the Enterprise.

Mike Rogers

Like I said way back in October of last year, this is such a beautiful piece that just gets you in the mood for the movie itself.

Steven Johnson

Yep, it's used on many of the VHS of the era, so much so that it's burned into my memory! XD

James Knight

Great reaction! FYI, Star Trek 5 came out during TNG Season 2, not Season 3 - between 2x18 Up the Long Ladder and 2x19 Manhunt.

Matt Everkoul

Bro missed a few chapters

Josh (Target Audience)

Amazon carries the 110 minute version from the 2009 Blu Ray which is the only one in the correct aspect ratio. Those extra scenes are not worth trading 2.40:1 in for 2.00:1 EDIT: MAN does that look good. Looking forward to this watch along :D

Matt Newmark

Wait, they’re supposed to be annoyed by each other. I’m confused by the meta-narrative

Terminaldogma01

Wow, I remember seeing this teaser when it aired 33 years ago. Holy shit.

Tom Occhipinti

This is a great shout - as they watch the TNG Episode trailers after the reaction, maybe do it with the films too?

The Ninth Doctor

I am so glad that you guys watched that. It is going to be fun when we get there

Eric Singer

It’s actually imo one of the better movies

Steve the greeeen hand

Back then, you went to a movie theater just to see the Trek trailer ...

Badger

And after being disappointed by Star Trek V, my first reaction when I heard about VI was, "Geez, just let it go already."

KevinH

Here's an even better quality version of this trailer from a 35mm scan. It is full frame without any cropping https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AropkYs23-E

JGoss

1991 was definitely a great time to be a Trek fan. TNG was at its peak, ST6 was on the way, there were all sorts of TV specials capitalizing on the 25th anniversary such as the TOS Viewers Choice Marathon, the 25th Anniversary special, conventions, Playmates and Micro Machines toy lines were blowing up.

JGoss

There's a certain Trek movie after this that had a teaser trailer with no footage from the movie. In fact, it snuck in TNG footage.

JGoss

You might watch the full ST6 trailer *after* you see the movie, simply because it's one of the earliest really good film trailers (trailers before 1991 were often pretty bad), plus, the composer for the film made a special, unique score for the trailer, rather than re-using music from the other movies, as this one did.

tyranusfan

I really hope you are watching the 2004 Special edition. The director re-edited a few scenes and the additional scenes from the 1992 home video release were included. Those help to provide context and clarity to some of the scenes in the theatrical version.

Ron Hubbard Jr

Yeah, they began showing this in Conventions before they did in theaters, and it blew all of us away! Christopher Plummer's voice was a SUPERB choice!

Alexandra Shepiro

That was the only teaser I saw for ST VI prior to the film and went into it totally blind which was a really good thing. Can't wait for you guys to see it. I know I've suggested it before, but you need to watch the movie before TNG S5 Episode 7. The episode aired a month before the movie, but you might want to make an exception for the release order viewing for this one.

Ron Hubbard Jr

They regular trailer is sick.

Christopher Boutwell

Okay. I guess this was the teaser?

Aaron Wells

Really?, a Star Trek trailer that doesn't spoil is pretty rare.

MrDeadstu

I've watched this movie like 4 or 5 times and that teaser still got me excited to watch it again when you guys drop your reaction.

Wrestling With Gaming

This is the teaser for ST6. There's no spoilers. It doesn't use any footage from the movie at all

Wrestling With Gaming

i think you didnt fully watch this vid

Narnman

Not having to sync was so nice! Can we just cheat and not have to sync on S5 also????

Paul Hess

Never seen this teaser before. Christopher Plummer doing the VO is a nice touch.

EnigmaticPenguin

I agree it has an abundance of everything they look for

harrypothead42024

Star Trek 6 is my favorite Star Trek movie and it's not even close

harrypothead42024

One of those voices that could read the Leaflet that comes with Medication and I'd still be totally engrossed.

James Knight

It was such a different feel to the world and the way entertainment worked . Had more style to it all . I’m talking everything in general . Ahhh the good ole days

Steve the greeeen hand

Doing the star trek experience at universal studios is a treasured memory for me

SinocTheHodgeheg

Oh god I’ve never seen that. There’s also a really cool 25th Anniversary special that has guest spots from the TOS and TNG cast and plugs Star Trek VI. I think it came with the 25th Anniversary set of movies I to V on VHS in widescreen. I’ll try to track it down. May be worth watching just after Star Trek VI as an extra for Patreons?

Paul Rymer

I have never watched this teaser before, so that was fun. It gave me goosebumps!

Ricky

Oh, I LOVED the Outro!!! I miss that. Talk about nostalgia!

Collin Freeman

So spoilers aren't a problem anymore???

MrDeadstu

A lovely valentine to TOS. Funnily enough if you watch the 4:3 version of this teaser you see more footage.

Column Meanie

Yep so as not to compete with Hook

Column Meanie

Now that the title is revealed, it can be brought up that "The Undiscovered Country" was the title Nicholas Meyer wanted for Star Trek II, until it became The Vengeance of Khan, and then Wrath of Khan (since at the time, Return of the Jedi was Revenge of the Jedi). Nicholas Meyer 9 years later finally got to bust out the title he wanted.

JGoss

We should start a poll for this. Same experience, and I'd wager there are a lot of us loving Alex & Josh's relese-order experience precisely because ours wasn't.

Ross Townsend

I love the last shot of the montage, it literally has the first appearance of Kirk and Spock from WNMHGB, and the latest appearance (circa early 1991) of Kirk and Spock in Star Trek V, side by side projected onto the hull of the Enterprise. Genius composition

JGoss

One of the things about broadcast media before the internet really established itself was that you had a lot more collective cultural touchpoints. TNG was a national -- even global -- show by 1991. Fans were very excited for ST6 for the same reason I think you'll find Season 5 is a very special run of episodes: it was the 25th Anniversary. If you want to get an idea of how pervasive Star Trek was at the time, the official 25th Anniversary Prime Time TV Special is available on YouTube. But DO NOT WATCH before you see ST6. The special aired on the actual Anniversary, in Sept of 91, and contains roughly 10 minutes of footage from the film as a promotion.

Avaria

Noticing now that it's interesting the movie came out during the holiday break from TNG. Episode 9 is in November and episode 10 is in January. It's also kind of between two mediocre episodes...

Joe Concepts

Christopher Plummer doing the narration .... GOAT

JGoss

THEY SAID THE THING!

Phil Ken Sebben

S tier for sure

Troy

You guys will love this movie so much

Troy

I can’t lie at that time it was odd to have both franchises going . But we had so much then man . Tng voyager ds9 movies theme parks . It was great

Steve the greeeen hand

Fun fact: even during the final edits, Undiscovered Country was considered behind the scenes to be the last Star Trek movie. They had no official designs on TNG movies yet. It was specifically Brandon Tartikoff, who was very briefly chairman of Paramount Pictures, that moved the needle towards more Star Trek movies after this one.

Ally Roth

Same

Steve the greeeen hand

Hi Josh and Alex ! Let’s watch a trailer

Steve the greeeen hand

I had such a weird experience growing up with Star Trek because I actually saw the movies before anything else from the series. Then my mom showed me TNG and then I started catching TOS episodes in my college years. I'm so excited for you guys to see this movie :) It's my favorite of the Trek movies.

Deep Red

Can't believe it's nearly time. The trailer is ok, but it's just a bit of hype so no harm done ☺️

SinocTheHodgeheg

Spoiler: You will love the movie.

Joe Pail

release date was pushed up to 12/6 if i recall
