Do we all agree that Reiker volunteers do quick just to get those memories of Odan and Beverly?

Just imagine if Geordi or Worf had been the character that bangs a Trill?

Dude, it was my birthday and she sang me happy birthday. Gates is a deeply cool person. As you continue growing your channel, you should think about interviewing some of the talent behind the show. Very gracious folks.

I interviewed Gates McFadden a few years ago and we talked about this episode. She's on record as saying she wishes they showed Crusher's struggles more. I asked her if she thought, had TNG been more serialized, that Beverly and femme Odan could've had a shot, and she said yes. I will say that Mrs. Odan definitely has rizz. That kiss on the wrist? Damn. She's smooth af.

"Today I find myself getting aggravated when I see television and films where I *agree* with the messages because the messages are not only not at all subtle, but it usually feels like they started with the message and slapped a barely-there plot on top of it."
That happened to me once, with Doctor Who's Chibnall era. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I'm saying it's not what the ragebait youtubers whining against it are angry against.
I'm more baffled by you recognizing Star Trek wasn't subtle but the immediate cognitive dissonance of saying that NOW when something is unsubtle it's bad.
I'm non-binary. We're never gonna be "subtle" enough to exist in media uncriticized. These ragebait youtubers don't want to see us, period. They don't want to see gay people, they don't want to see trans people, they don't want to see black people. It's always gonna be "forced", it's always gonna be "why did this character have to be something other than a cishet, white man?" The goalpost of subtlety is always gonna be pushed. By all means feel free to criticize awful writing, but know the trap you're walking around.

I'm not so sure that that's always or even usually true. I've said many times over the years that so much of my moral/ethical belief system was essentially built by 80s and 90s television, including a lot of Star Trek. it was Star Trek and other television of that era that really instilled ideas in me like racial equality, violence being a last resort, that women could be as effective as men, etc., but it almost always did it in a way that was not so much subtle but in a way where the messages always felt like they were just a natural outgrowth of the stories and like the stories stood very well on their own even if there were no message to send.
Today I find myself getting aggravated when I see television and films where I *agree* with the messages because the messages are not only not at all subtle, but it usually feels like they started with the message and slapped a barely-there plot on top of it.

I can't help but wonder if he is a bit high in this video. My brother watched this episode (and most of the show) when he was baked and had a similar reaction. Then he re-watched it a few years later and out of nowhere said "man that shit fucking sucked".

Good episode in that it explores themes of love and attraction that weren't so prevalent at the time on TV. In today's viewing, it seems small and lacking but considering it was 1991 when it aired, this was a big step forward. Just my humble opinion though.

That said, I liked the episode's treatment of the question too. TNG wasn't always the best on LGBT things, but this end scene was very subtle and ambiguous enough that it can't really be construed as anything other than Beverly's personal preferences and boundaries, which are understandable.
I think I'm falling somewhere between you two grade wise, maybe a B+/A ?

Oh, my sweet summer children... As a queer person, when people make ragebait videos saying progressive political messaging in movies is too in your face, they don't object to the lack of subtlety, they object to the message.
