UNCUT - The Host (TNG S4E23) | Star Trek Journey 204

Comments

In a cut scene, Riker reveals he was always in control and just trying to get with Crusher.

Truecoat

I can see why you found this episode entertaining, but this is straight up D tier for me. A very boring and trite "romance of the week" with some generic dude who is completely unmemorable and makes the romance very bland and unbelievable.

Fedora The Explorar

The “only this guy can perform this negotiation” trope. Riva, Sarek, Odan happens a few times..

Philbot

I heard there are novels that explain away the differences. One word Augment virus. Sorry that’s 2 words..

Philbot

Odan: "You didn't think I'd notice how you look at Dr. Beverly? I'm not the fool you take me for." Riker: "You're a dead man Odan! A dead man." 😂

Philbot

A C Alex? Seriously? There was so much emotion and conflict in this episode. And the Twilight Zone ending where the last Trill was a woman. I agree with Josh, totally an S!

Lou Trek

Either that, or he's a gentleman.

Mark Chrisco

You don't have to be so rude Jovet. They already know of or have heard of the races I mentioned and I did not give any details. Who hurt you so badly that you have to come on here and be mean???

Echo Moon

First Riker pilots the shuttle then quickly volunteers himself as host. How convenient... Odan: "You didn't think I'd notice how you look at Dr. Beverly? I'm not the fool you take me for." Riker: "You're a dead man Odan! A dead man." OK, on a more serious note. I actually respect that this episode has Beverly struggle to embrace each change. For one thing it's perfectly natural. It's incredibly unfair to expect someone to just change their sexuality/preferences at all let alone so quickly. Also, trying to establish that your sexuality/preferences are a choice actually sets a pretty dangerous precedent. Secondly, these stories are supposed to be about exploring new frontiers. It simply isn't interesting if there isn't some struggle or conflict along the way. If Beverly was just cool with it the whole time what would be the point? I think it's impressive that Beverly manages to be as mature and rational as she is considering what she's going through. Either way I think the whole Trill concept is interesting, even if a lot of what's in this episode is retconned later. I guess there's no harm in mentioning that since it's been spoiled already. I can't wait to see what Alex and Josh think when the Trill are reintroduced later.

Paul Noad

Just write up a quick summary of every episode of the show while you're at it.

Jovet

Fun fact… this episode marks the 11th appearance of Joyce Robinson as Ensign Gates at the Conn. She also appeared in two seasons of “The Amazing Race,” winning one of the seasons.

Matt Everkoul

You may freely forget everything you've learned about the Trill species in this episode. The actual Trill that appear later in Trek canon are completely different than this first (and also last) iteration of the species. The only common thing is that they also have a symbiont.

Marko

@Matthew McKinnon-Gray A moon pie fight, perhaps?

Jovet

@BN13 Except none of those things is possible. It's not a human failing to be unprepared to what is outside the realm of experience or possibility. For the same reason, discussions about "the zombie apocalypse" also bore the hell out of me. The "human failing" bit was aimed at the audience, in a very preachy way.

Jovet

Hey! Let's quote that accurately and completely (after The Doctor transforms into a woman, his girlfriend and fiancée objects): “I'm afraid Doctor, and I'm not sure if this sentence has ever been used so completely accurately before, but: You're just not the man I fell in love with.” — "The Curse of Fatal Death" (1999) I figured I was probably the only person that also thought of these two scenes, years later!

Jovet

Ideally, you should love a person for all of it.

Jovet

Just delete this episode from your head canon.

Brian K

The "Human failing" referred to our need for whoever we love to maintain the same outward appearance that we've come to accept as "them." As well as our need for some sort of consistency and stability there. It's acknowledging that we don't purely love just the soul regardless. Outward appearance does play a part. She's saying that maybe one day THAT will change. If our spouse suddenly became 10 years old for instance, or changed genders, or was placed into a whole new body entirely, or they suddenly looked like our mom, or our son, how would that affect the relationship? Would we learn to overcome it and still love them for who they really are, or would it be too much for us? And what if that happened every few months? Or even every day? Some of us might be able to do it, but for most of us, that would probably put heavy strain on the marriage. THAT is the human failing. To be attracted to appearance, and to need appearance.

BN13

Thanks, I missed that!

Ron Hubbard Jr

Cannot wait until you guys get to DS9, they delve deeper into different species/races lore and history like the Trill, Cardassians, Ferengi, and the Andorians plus many others. I also love the main cast, well most of them. LOL

Echo Moon

In terms of the philosophy and message of this episode, and the idea that it's trying to explore, I give this episode an S. Which is "do we truly love a person just for their 'soul' or does their outward appearance play a much bigger role in that?" I also realized that I quote this episode quite often. But in terms of execution and overall quality, this episode is a C. Odan is just your basic random love interest of the week that you know won't work out. He's a little unlikeable at the beginning, and you're not really all that invested in what happens to him. You also don't get invested at all in the conflict between the two moons that Odan is supposed to resolve, and I actually completely forgot that that was even part of the plot of this episode. Then to top it all off, all the stuff with Riker just comes off as goofy and weird, not to mention highly questionable. The Trill are an interesting concept though, and since it's already been spoiled, yes they do come back. However, when they do, they are highly retconned from what you see here. This is essentially proto-Trill. When this episode was written, they never intended to bring the Trill back. So how the Trill work in this episode is purely as a plot device. They needed a way to essentially transport a soul into multiple bodies. So for the purposes of THIS episode alone, the personality is purely the symbiote, and that personality completely overrides the host personality. The host is literally just a body and outward appearance. Later on though, once they decide to bring the Trill back, they flesh them out a lot as to how that whole process actually works, and they don't make them so clear cut black and white. We also learn a lot more about their culture and how both symbiotes and joined Trill are viewed and treated. Basically, they get even more interesting than how they are presented here.

BN13

Never know what to think of this one. Tend to file it under “it’s fine” seeing as it been spoiled i do think The Trill are a fascinating race but none of that is based on this episode.

Darren Seal

realistically though, this is the kind of mission the enterprise would get a lot, moderating high profile negotiations, showing the flagship and a crew who can deal with the unexpected and a ship that can defende itself against threats. I get you guys come from a different perspective, but I don't have a problem with the enterprise being the ship to host these kind of missions with different variations. People ask the federation to moderate because their status as the oominant power in the alpha/beta quadrant central intersection area (you guys should look at some maps at some point, the ones you willfind will have small differences but since they are all based from references and maps shown in the shows and canonical sttaements, the general locations of places and powers and "borders" remain consistent. Recall that tough space is three dimensional, the milky way is a disc, so a "north, south,, east, west, axis" can be imposed over a much smaller "up/down" area. Seeing the map also gives you a sense of just how huge the galaxy really is and how local the area the federation knows is versus say the absolutely massive territory of the Borg, a giant blotch on the delta quadrant extending into the far "north" of the Beta Quadrant, where "Q Who took place" But you should wait only look at tng, tos maps, because later maps will have some spoilers about major players and locations from the future. Here. Only look at "UFP Main Core" and "Local Space" maps of the galaxy beyond that may contain spoilers. The map is incredibly detailed, can be zoomed in on, and has a searchable index for every location. Leep in mind this again is a two dimensional projection of 3d space, so for example the federation doesnt stop at the klingon border and resume past it, it goes UNDER it. http://www.startrekmap.com/mapovview.html

paultardspambot .

the old guy who became young again, i think you mentioned the guy who had the chorus.

paultardspambot .

I think it was pretty much the same but Beverly and Odan do engage in an onscreen kiss before Odan leaves which Berman vetoed as too controversial. 1991 was a very different time.

paultardspambot .

Since its spoiled, what he means is there are certain things here that are later contradicted in DS9 and it can frustrating for a continuity buff. To me its not really an issue and we can say Elan is a different race or subspecies of trill to explain the inconisstencies. Again, not trying to spoil, it was already spoiled and i was surprised you read the comment given it was so obvious what that had to mean. But I didn't give anything away specific about the trill or ds9, just that they will be featured again and explored in a much more interesting way and there are some inconsistencies and the trill we get to know in DS9 are fascinating and so much more interesting then this character who was used as single story element rather then a deep exploration of this concept and society. Please don't boot me, I'm only commenting off of what was already made obvious without any specific details.

paultardspambot .

yeah, the "not getting into spoliers" thing kinda does spoil it. Yes, the Trill are in ds9, and they're much bettere explored and treated much more interestingly then this epsidoe that introduced them. W

paultardspambot .

I'm not sure when it started, but TNG had a thing where they would look at submissions from potential writers as they were always looking for both writing talent and good episode ideas. The random writer may have been an early one of those and that may account for the "weird off the wall stuff" feel of the episode. The funny thing is, I can see both perspectives, its all about how engaged you are with the characters and can suspend disbelief and imagine these characters are actually going through these circumstances. Though I think the other guy has such a Bev crush he just didnt like an episode around some mysterious guest character where we are told/shown they have a had a whirlwing romance of the sort she hasn't had since Jack died and sort of put in the middle of this with reasons to distrust Odan. I guess he felt bad and protective for Beverly and the whole thing was kind of umpleasant.

paultardspambot .

One thing thats fun about trek as a franchise is when they introduce alien species, even if they are minor, theres so much of trek you never know when a particular race/species will show up again.

paultardspambot .

why would there be difficulties. Crusher is one of the best doctors in starfleet with top medical equipment and the symbiont does most of the work and trill are compatable, Its just cutting open her stomach and putting the symbiont in, let its do its thing, then seal up the stomach. Not very complicated by TNG standards.

paultardspambot .

Imagine the ambassador is Riker's friend and this is all an elaborate plot to bang Beverly without getting shit for it.

paultardspambot .

To answer your parasite question Many parasites have evolved excretions that down regulate the immune system. There is in fact a theory that a partial cause of the rise of auto-immune diseases are from people's immune systems that always had parasites downregulating their immune systems now had overactive immune systems. In fact, there are people who purposely administer helminths (worms but the kind that die and dont reproduce inside you) to treat their immune problems. It has shonw promisebu but more for allergen type immune disorders and bowel then joint. Professional companies are trying to isolate the chemicals from these helmintsh to patent a drug, but I think this is foolish because its a dynamic back and forth process that requires the organism to fine tune, not just a single chemical. That said, many people do have violent immunological reactions to parasites that can be more dangerous then the action of the parasite themselves. It veru much depends on the type. If you want you can call me Proffesor Science, lol. Or Captain Wacky, either one.

paultardspambot .

also, dang the comment section fills up fast. I usually catch these the same day they're posted an my comments are relegated to the bottom. I guess people look at exactly when they'll be dropping and jump in to get their comments in.

paultardspambot .

You guys when you asked what the plan was missed the dialogue where they contacted Trill and advised them of the situation and that they would send a trill to transfer the symbiont to but he wouldnt be able to get there till too late for the tenseness of the situation to wait for him. I comment while watching along but I assum you figure that at the end, there was a clear piece of dialogue you musta have missed or were talking over

paultardspambot .

I had never seen this episode before. The premise sounded pretty uncomfortable to me, and now that I've seen it, it's definitely one of the most unusual TNG episodes of all time. All of the character relationships feel so off right from the start with Beverly snogging alien Kevin Sorbo, Picard basically getting cucked, Riker and Beverly banging, and the final scene with Beverly and the fem host. It definitely kept my interest though. I would feel much the same way as Beverly. To quote a certain Dr. Who skit, "You're just not the man I fell in love with." Despite what a person may say, people DO change over time both emotionally and physically. And if you are not getting what you need from your partner anymore because of something they lost either willingly or unwillingly, you're going to question whether that relationship is worth maintaining. It's easier to accept when that change happens over time, but when it occurs spontaneously it's much harder.

SuicuneSol

so it seems the host merges with the symbiont who has been influenced by the past hosts. In riker's case, being a human nost, the symbiont completely overwhelmed him and there was very little of Riker.

paultardspambot .

1. Its so funny how he just the guy, he's got such a fic crush on Beverly. 2. Lunar Limbs are a real thing, it's a legit term. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_limb

paultardspambot .

"teenage boy" Wow, what a can of worms that would be.

SuicuneSol

I don't have a lot to say about this episode, but I decided I had hoarded D ratings long enough and that's the bin this one is going in for me. There are just so many problems with this one for me. First off, I'm not one of those people that makes a big deal out of the nurse in First Contact. At most that was an inconvenience for Riker, hardly SA. Here OTOH Riker signed up to help prevent a war, not have his body used to bang a coworker and subordinate. Worse yet Crusher should have known that, and Troi certainly shouldn't have signed off on something for Riker that he didn't. That of course leads into the problem the Trill present here, which is that the hosts, who seem to be fully realized people, are simply subsumed by the symbiont. That's basically the Goa'uld from Stargate, which are the villains of the series. No different than Dr. Graves taking over Data's body that Picard was so quick to call out, but here it's all fine I guess. And finally like others, I don't like the implication at the end that Crusher being heterosexual is a failing of some kind. Just looking at it from a basic, evolutionary standpoint, sex exists to facilitate procreation, which is only naturally achieved(in humans anyway) via heterosexual pairings. I couldn't care less who someone sleeps with, but the fact is being heterosexual is the norm. Not because society decided that, but because millions of years of evolution did. Ridiculous thing to apologise for. Pretty trash episode. Save from an E by some interesting concepts, but a failure in execution IMO.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Yeah at this point the hosts seem to just become bodybags for trill that no one cares about. So it would make the most sense that's he's practically asleep during it all. But...Data does have a first person memory of kissing riker.

Greg Quinn

In fairness...it's extra work..I get it.

Greg Quinn

The woman said her name, Kareel, when she walked in.

Timothy Nikiforovs

into double digits now

Timothy Nikiforovs

They didn't lean into it as much as Troi's foot massage in The Price

Timothy Nikiforovs

It has elements of both. They'll appreciate it more the second time ’round.

Jovet

There was almost footwashing/footrubbing in this one. Obviously the producers were totally anti-footfetish.

Jovet

I agree the green screen sets always looked great

Doug

But the show tried to preach that: "Maybe it's a human failing..." "...maybe some day..."

Jovet

Even more reason to just put the symbiote inside her. Then it can just bulge out all the time!

Jovet

Nah.

Jovet

The ending would have been much improved if they had done one of two things. Either casting a more charming actress as the new host, or, better, make the replacement a teenage boy.

Mark Chrisco

There are a lot of soap opera vibes in this one. But there are several good character moments mixed in so that mitigates it.

tyranusfan

Galaxy Quest is more a parody of TOS than TNG, tho.

tyranusfan

*Alex Kurtzman has Entered The Chat*

Forbidden Donut

It’s interesting that we only got the symbiont’s name (Odan) and neither of its Trill hosts.

Ron Hubbard Jr

Topics like this were so effing rare, so for those not on the far ends of those stereotypical lines this was really appreciated it. IDIC🖖🏻🖖🏿🖖🏽🖖🖖🏾🖖🏼

M.E. Burnes

In case you can’t tell, Gates McFadden was very pregnant in this episode. They hid it pretty well in this episode.

Ron Hubbard Jr

And we’re gonna have to point out the gravestones in that one, too. :)

Ross Townsend

Marvin Rush is the cinematographer for the show, who took over for Edward R. Brown in season 3. He got a chance to direct.

Chris S.

I loved the green screen with the different T G sets. I think that was awesome, and you actually did a great jib with the key! There was hardly any bleed.

Chris S.

First intro of the Trill, they do evolve the lore a bit eventually

Jack Fletcher

I don't think I get the criticism of the ending, really. No matter what you think of gender or sexuality, the most modern idea is still that you are what you are. Even if the world completely accepts the idea of non-binary gender identity 100%, it doesn't mean all people will become that way. It don't think it would make sense to have her accept the new Odan given that Beverly is established to be into men. I suppose, the major progressive thing they could've had was her saying "Some of my people don't stay with one gender, but that's how I am." And that would be a stretch to have on TV then.

Joe Concepts

I’m glad somebody enjoyed this episode. i know it’s important but I literally fell asleep while rewatching it.

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Preferably involving a pie fight

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

The commercial that featured a hand soking in Palmalv was back in the 60s. Which I first saw when I was a kid.

Keith S

Not necessarily. We could be lying to you. But what if I told you that Dr. Stubbs was a Trill?

tyranusfan

So glad I'm not the only old timer who thought the same thing during that scene!

KevinH

We get it, they are coming back

Josh (Target Audience)

WOKE GARBAGE

Evan Guthrie

this was a C for me when it aired

David Marcoot

It's ok. No Google needed. It softens hands while you do the dishes 😉

Ian Ramsey

No.

Jovet

To "Yackety Sax"

Jovet

I always assumed that's what it was, too.

Jovet

I doubt he was conscious of any of it.

Jovet

I'm confused why this would make you old. Palmolive is still a big name dish soap brand.

Steve Boshear

You're soaking in it!

Edweirdo

The Trill weren’t well represented here. The idea was a little confused.

tyranusfan

I would have loved to have seen and awkward moment between Riker and Beverly (like Dtaa and Yar) after the symbiot was removed. I'm sure he remembered everything.

Keith S

The green goo that Bevely had her hand in was probably Palmolive dish washing liquid, Google it. I'm so old.

Keith S

Nice, I got the final word. *McCoy smile into camera*

Nolan

Ah yes, well until that happens I think we should keep that discussion sub rosa, if you know what I mean

Deep Red

As someone who gets a kick out of "so bad it's good" type stuff, there's one episode that I cannot wait to see the reaction for.

THE LORE!!!

Somewhere out there is a rewrite where Picard and Troi do a comedy team-up where they both try to sabotage Riker/Odan and Crusher's relationship with increasingly wacky antics.

Deep Red

Hmm..

Paul

One more on a mountain of thousands.

Paul

This is officially the Bangin'-ist episode of all TNG and all of Star trek up till now

Prof Moff

If the Trill were brought back, fleshed out, and handled better, do you think you'd like to see them again?

THE LORE!!!

The sex scoreboard Riker 10 NEW? +1 Troi 3 Dr. Bev 3 NEW +3 Data 1 Picard 1 Worf 1 Geordi 1 Broccoli 2 i Chief 1 Keiko 1 Extras: Interesting situation. Clearly Dr Beverly will add. Now the question is how many. The easy answer is +1 BUT if she is dogging the dude and the walnut looking thing does that mean it is really +2? What about the whole Riker thing. Did they really RiKick-it so should it be a +3? We have decided that +3 is the most likely agreeable conclusion. Of course what about the new host, nah no time but maybe

Prof Moff

You will find out lots of details on the Trill , later

Derek Orr

Beverly romance episodes... don't have a great track record

Deep Red

Only other somewhat related example i can think of is Klinger in MASH

Derek Orr

Very good and accurate point, Jovet

Collin Freeman

For the time that this came out it was fairly unusual. Basically on TV it was almost exclusively heterosexuals portrayed, with an exceptionally rare gay, bi, or asexual (though I don't think they ever referred to them as asexual), and out of those the vast majority of those were all one and done. So for the show to focus on fully the non physical aspect of sexuality was in fact unheard of at the time.

Mark Wood

That would definitely be cool one day

Josh (Target Audience)

Are you guys gonna realize the seating dream in the new home/set? Your community remembers how cool you thought Klingon chairs looked. ;)

Ross Townsend

The fact that for the time it aired there was even a hint of same sex anything on TV is a plus. It's one I always rewatch just because of Beverly's agonizing over what love truly is. Solid A for me.

Dru Blood

I think they handled the end great too

Josef Nitervol

There's nothing wrong with Doctor Beverly liking and wanting The D.

Jovet

A brain or a long dick—Pick one!

Jovet

C+! + for the ending lol hahaha Usually your tomfoolery annoys me on great episodes, but this was a blast watching it with you two knuckleheads!

Josef Nitervol

What most women say they didn't get with their man. A Brain and a long dick...

Mark Wood

If I’m not mistaken (someone correct me), I think they were supposed to kiss and that’s what Rick vetoed. Not sure if the ending would have been the same.

Sainjl

55:05 "A brain with a long dick!" ROTFL!!!!

Jovet

One man's protein bar is another man's brownie.

Jovet

48:12 PREACH WARNING

Jovet

Well since the cat is unfortunately out of the bag, another +1 for reasons they will love ds9

Phil Ken Sebben

45:30 Why doesn't Beverly have Odan's symbiote implanted in herself? The ultimate self love experience.

Jovet

43:06 Oh yeah, they porked!

Jovet

37:20 Ringworm is a fungus, not a parasite. Those types of parasites cause such a local disruption that they are generally tolerated, plus they can release both toxins and suppressants to persist.

Jovet

33:20 Accept the love. Accept the (Riker) seed.

Jovet

Well, this Trill looks ... different.

Sam Langanke

It’s a protein bar

Josh (Target Audience)

11:48 Troi knows. hahaha

Jovet

7:40 ROTFL!!!!!! OMG And now I want brownies

Jovet

2:50 The word you want is "melancholy" (melon-cally)

Jovet

I still think you should re-watch Galaxy Quest once you're done with TNG. 😁
