This was horrible. Just one of my many nits: If I was watching Little House on the Prairie I wouldn't expect the producers/writers to get all the science right but this is supposed to be SCIENCE [-based] fiction. Hydrogen won't explode [or even burn] without an oxidizer, like oxygen. I see gross errors in almost every episode. I get suspending reality for things like faster than light travel ans such, but this show often goes off the rails with many mundane science concepts. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy the characters (except Troi) and the stories but sometimes I just grit my teeth.

I think the rest of the episode is so good that for those of use who watched this first run, we've spent 3 decades rewatching the best of it and suffering through the worst(?) of it and it's an accumulative effect.

This was an episode I've completely forgotten about honestly. Having said that, yeah, it's pretty great. No clue why this didn't stand out to me.

Ok now… 🤐

I like how this starts out reminiscent of, for instance, THE THOLIAN WEB, and even recycles a few of that episode's plot elements but WITHOUT it being a repeat or rehash or reboot. Amazing; I totally forgot how great this one is.

Fair point 👍

An eagle-eyed viewer might be able to see the wires. A pedant, might be able to see the wires. But I think if you're looking at the wires you're ignoring the story.

You know, on this rewatch I realised the floating isn't even as bas as I remembered. Although it is slightly bad 🤣

Not to be picky but it's not dreaming that the brain needs, it's REM. Rapid Eye Movement is necessary for deep sleep so the brain can achieve proper brain health by washing out toxins and solidifying memories and what the brain learned during the day before. Dreaming happens to be a byproduct of REM and not all people remember dreams even if achieving proper REM. While Dr. Crusher's explanation is someone accurate that not remembering dreams indicates loss of REM, it's not really the most scientific explanation for a 24th century physician. :)

A lot of dislike for the Troi floating, but considering the time this originally aired, it's basically the norm for special effects. I enjoy this one 'wire work and all' because it's interesting to me seeing how the crew reacts in this crisis. And who doesn't love a good jump scare with Riker and the snakes lol.

For the record... I lived this situation... I worked the midnight shift for several years, then worked a 2nd job right after that shift. The midnight shift was just me, alone, monitoring computers in a very old building. Many nights I'd hear a door slam... or voices in the distance... or people calling my name, so I'd go looking for people... no one was there. My gf insisted that I spend time with her at her college, so i was running on very little sleep. Hearing your gf call your name in a deserted building in the middle of the night is very unsettling.

Or, he turn into a spider. Now that is nightmare fuel.

It would have totally ruined the mood they were going for, but it would have been funny to see Barclay have a waking nightmare and he's just doing something totally mundane like public speaking and he just starts screaming.

Worf tried to kill himself after a week of not sleeping. No wonder he sent his kid to Earth to live with his parents. He'd have been dead before Alexander's first birthday.

Decided to save this reaction for my early morning anxiety wake up and it was the perfect pairing!
