Comments

Around Season 4 was when you can start to grade episodes on both their importance to the overall universe-building of the franchise and how good the contained storytelling and execution is. This episode is fantastic in both metrics.

Jack Molitor

So as someone who was there when this first broadcast, there was a collective snicker in the room when "the reveal" happened. As in, how many ways will she find to try and get back in the show she herself walked out of?

Alan Thompson

He's an artist? Never knew that. Interesting.

wildhunt1973

JG? That guy is a good artist. Loved his old pulp fiction novella covers

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Under boob > Side boob > DURAS SISTERS

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Also just misses S tier for me

Jeffrey

Cliff BOOOOOLE!!

The Ninth Doctor

I think I agree with you!

Jovet

This was an A for me until that final scene hit me like an emotional sledge hammer. S material.

Nick Sauer

For the most part, I only watched TNG episodes when they aired, so I'm seeing them again for the first time with you. The single thing I remember about this episode is the last scene...and three months of theories.

RRTthatsme

Face it this one has it all. Whoopi Goldberg, Tony Todd, Denise Crosby, Robert O’reilly (Gowron(,Barbara March (Lursa), Gwynyth Walsh (B’Etor) Picard completing the rite of succession, Klingon civil war, romulan and Klingon conspirators, Worf resigning his commission, and the battle for honor It’s gonna. Be a long three weeks shorter than the three months I had to stew for.

Thicketdweller

Peak scheming Klingons. I like how it feels like events are increasingly spiralling out of the protagonists’ control

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Pretty great cliffhanger with interesting Klingon politics and Worf development. I remember losing it when I first saw Denise Crosby back as a damn Romulan!

Clyde Frog

They did a great job of not spoiling it by putting her name in the credits of that episode or this one.

Jeffrey P

Probably should not mention Tapestry. That’s a spoiler.

Sainjl

One of the best episodes in the show

Steephill

Goodby!

ComMix

Blatant continuity error. They happen. Certainly not the first, and not the last.

Jovet

You didn't recognize the voice first?

Jovet

I agree on "the Klingon stuff" but this episode is excellent. THIS Klingon stuff was not boring.

Jovet

More shocking? Sure. More of a cliffhanger? Nah. It's not really a cliffhanger at all. It's just a shock ending. One that is pretty explainable with a little reflection.

Jovet

🤦 @ spoilers

Jovet

One of Picard's best lines ever!

Jovet

:Denise Crosby voice: Or weeks.

Jovet

Troi did not resign from Starfleet. She resigned her position as ship's counselor. This is the second time that Worf has walked away from his duty, however.

Jovet

I'm expecting the boys to re-create this scene at the end of this episode: https://jovet.net/files/images/mackey.gif

Jovet

Now THIS is a solid episode. I love Gowron's exasperated "THE COUNCIL KNEW??!"

Jovet

Klingon Civil War...great stuff. I might have to say on S5E1...

Alexander McKechnie

Don't worry, we'll eventually see more of Worf!

Alexander McKechnie

Hertzler is the perfect Klingon, but he's the PERFECT Klingon. Gowron is the perfect, RUTHLESS Klingon.

wildhunt1973

Yeah, you can't help but love bat-sh!t crazy!

wildhunt1973

I totally agree. Love that man. However, I would argue the "perfect" Klingon has not yet appeared on screen. I'm waiting for J.G Hertzler to make his appearance

Deep Red

Intersting note, Star Trek 6 was recorded between the seasons, and caused drastic changes in the sets. The Transporter room wall dressing, and the back wall of obsercvation lounge, plus they had torn down the crew quarters that were built for Star Trek The Motion Picture. Used in TNG as Waorf and Data's quarter, nnot the big ones with windows.

Quacer Productions

Ok, last twenty seconds of the episode, what a twist! Let's not mince words, we all know who that is, even though it didn't say it in the credits. But how? Why? I want to hear your craziest conspiracy theories! Most of us had 3 months, you have the time you're taking between seasons. I think you should come up with a few predictions to start S5 ep 1 with.

THE LORE!!!

Aside from"Measure of a Man", "Best of Both Worlds", "Drumhead" and "Tapestry" the Klingon episodes are the best! They are what we waited for as kids! The obsession started in TOS and continued on! They were a mystery and the more episodes involving their culture and traditions to better understand them? We soaked those up!

Kate Courtney

Sorry, i'm 44, i've never heard the phrase 'boob windows '. Is that some kind of censorship? Trust me in England even if a woman goes full frontal it's not censored.

jon bolton

Slight guilty confession i do have a crush on the younger Duras sister. Lol

jon bolton

A great episode worthy of an S, i have a feeling Josh and Alex will agree. Bringing back Gowron, and Kurn, meeting the 'delightful ' Duras sisters. I look forward to seeing your faces when you see Denise Crosby as a Romulan. This is the second time in Season 4 where a main Officer resigns from Starfleet, after Troi did in 'The Loss'.

jon bolton

THAT'S what just about all of us thought - I nearly fell out of my chair when that certain someone stepped out from the shadows................ and the rest of that summer, just like the one before, was WAY too long!

Rhett Coates

Let's paraphrase a lyric from 'The Wizard of Oz' .... Klingons and Romulans and WORF: OH MY.

Rhett Coates

Those eyes of his have become a meme and a half since then! I think someone did a musical spoof of Gowron's eyes with the song "Betty Davis Eyes."

Rhett Coates

That point - what Josh & Alex speculate about who this person is - is what's really got me interested in seeing their discussion about it....... As George Takei would say, "OH, MY!"

Rhett Coates

"Humans have a way of showing up when you least expect" You know the writer was grinning for days after writing that line.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Not permanently anyways

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Of course, I'm just bullshitting..........or am I🤔

Timothy Nikiforovs

The scene where the whole crew gives Worf a send-off gives me a lump in my throat every time.

Chris Mickelson

Who needs Game of Thrones when you the Klingon High Council?

Sean Richard

👀

Juan Tutrífor

Don’t worry, Worf did not leave the show…

marty63026

Totally agree. BOBW is great and that last shot of Riker is great but they have built up to this over several episodes and man did they deliver. Great!

marty63026

Very similar boob window to Powergirl in DC comics, just not nearly as large 😂

marty63026

👁️👁️

Sixto

You have manipulated the circumstances with the skill of a Romulan. Excellent tea.

Collin Freeman

I said, "Huh?"

Jeffrey P

Yeah, it sucked that Worf left the show to join his people and learn how not to get his ass kicked on a weekly basis. But hey, it opened the door for Robert O'Reilly to join the cast as the Klingon leader in exile, casting bulbous, judgemental eyes at everyone and everything. Good times.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Gowron "Women may not serve on the council......... unless I say so"

Timothy Nikiforovs

Surpriiiiiiise!!!!

David Wayne Fox

Worf of thrones is back 👁️👁️ and better than ever ! Add that they didn’t put the name in the credits so nothing was ruined ?! Hell yeah ! S and more!

Sixto

Not one of the better Klingon episodes to be honest if we are looking at only the first part. The second part is way better IMO. This one by itself is just a B tier for me.

Spencer Loften

Usually it's actually safe to read wikipedia recaps for episodes as you're going through, this is the one example I can think of where it prominently lists the major spoiler, listing Denise Crosby as guest star.

Ian Westcott

Boy, it's... okay, it's not a bad season ending. No, it's no Best of Both Worlds, but it's all right. Worf's best Klingon episodes came as mid-season events, like the Emissary, Sins of the Father, Reunion. I guess I'll say Denise Crosby's reappearance is just.. silly. It's the OH MY GOD moment that they were looking for, that's the problem. They keep trying to recapture that BOBW high.

Ian Westcott

You've now been introduced to Klingon Kleavage!

Ron Hubbard Jr

This cliffhanger beat TBOBW part 1 just from the ending alone and then realizing they set it up right in front of us two episodes earlier. The fact that they didn't credit Denise Crosby in "The Mind's Eye" was pure genius.

Ron Hubbard Jr

This was the first time I ever said "Holy s**t" watching Star Trek with that ending.

Ron Hubbard Jr

Thanks, Star Trek, I was about five when boob windows suddenly showed up.

Juan Tutrífor

"Qa'pla!" ............. "Goodbye" is one of the best exchanges in all of Star Trek. SO MUCH subtext there, the human vs Klingon sides of Worf, on full display.

JGoss

More Klingon lore! A voice and face from the past! Another season ending cliffhanger! Be interesting to see if you figure out who "she" is. I have it ranked as "Best of the Best".

KatWithAttitude

As I write this, y'all have yet to post your reaction to "The Mind's Eye." I'm really curious if either of you had recognized Denise Crosby's voice in that episode.

Moonlander

I hope y'all like this one, but I'm not sure you'll like this one. One way or another, Worf's character journey was begging to be resolved, and kudos to the producers and writers for not milking it TOO long. Nothing could beat the cliffhanger at the end of Season Three, but boy-howdy did the writers try. If nothing else, I'm glad that we get to see more Gowron and Klingon lo(rrrr[rrrr{rrrr}rrrr]rrrr)e explored before... well... before we find ourselves relying more and more on established canon in Trek to come.

Shortskirtsandexplosions

Gene didn’t want to end the season with a Worf story. He still believed that Worf was essentially a secondary character and shouldn’t carry a finale. (Remember, Worf was not his idea, he had to be talked into putting a Klingon on the bridge in the first place.) Kind of a wild take. Fortunately, the other producers talked him into it.

tyranusfan

Yeah... how do you top "Best of Both Worlds, Part 1?" You do it with Worf...

Who North America

Wow whenever I watch this episode I’m on the edge…. Of glory! Thank you I’ll get my coat

LonghillAndy

This was more of a cliffhanger than TBOBW part 1. Worst part was picking up your jaw after the last scene and realizing you had to wait months to find out the explanation for wtf you just watched.

Christopher Boutwell

A different twist on the season-ending cliffhanger than before, and indicative of Season 4 as a whole: character, edging out over plot. Stakes are arguably lower than Best of Both Worlds (rightly), but more focused on character and following up "Sins", "Minds Eye" and "Reunion". A solid lead-in to a run of some great episodes into early Season 5. Plus, the introduction of Klingon Kleavage... Can't wait to hear your theories on the ending, and if they're accurate...

The Ninth Doctor

Cliff Boled me over as usual

Paul Hess

Very good, 8.3/10, A-Tier. I always enjoy these more mature, complex episodes, and the Klingon ones do that the best. We meet Gowron, Worf gets his honor back, and end off seeing a Romulan Tasha. Great set-up for the even better second part.

Steven Cressler

A for me. Not quite the unforgettable all-timer that "Best of Both Worlds" was, but this is still great entertainment with big character moments, world-building stakes, and plenty of fun intrigue.

Lovok

Not as quite as famous as Best of both Worlds, but arguably a bit better due to the build-up over 4 seasons. This is the two-parter that makes me long for a Klingons-only TV-Show, maybe a kind of Game of Thrones in space. S-Tier for sure.

Tim b

You will love this one.

Crankygrandma

Never got into Klingon stuff so this one is a long ep for me. Worf being out shot, and there is a hot Klingon sister though which bumps it to C

Prof Moff

THAT's not the cliffhanger, THIS is the cliffhanger.

Joe Concepts

My one knock on this ep is that they spend a LOT of time reminding the viewer about what happened in Sins and Reunion. In 1991 that was the price you had to pay for having ongoing storylines, but today it feels a little janky at points.

bab

Pretty good.

Greg Quinn

Bye Worf

James Knight

Gowron's eyes make a guest appearance, meaning this episode can't be worse than an A

Jeffrey

Not as strong a season ender as Best of Both Worlds, but you guys may still have to pick your jaw up off the floor. And it's a great continuation of the storyline running in the background of the show, especially in S4. Every Worf episode has lead up to this. And lets not overlook the return of Gowron either. I shall enjoy your confused feelings about the Duras' sisters.

Nolan

A. Introduced two new villans in the Duras sister's. Three if you count the Tasha look alike just before the end credits. Another cliff hanger that gets you bitting your nails for three months

Keith S

This was intended to be the season 3 finale, following up Sins. However, they decided to go with the Borg instead, pushing this, and Worf's dishonor, out a season. Since Reunion happened in the meantime, they had to rewrite this by adding the Duras sisters to take the place of Duras.

JGoss

Great premise, great finale, and the episode plays better in streaming / bingeing format because the political storylines are much easier to follow without a 4 month break in between episodes. The Klingons finally come to hold their own as characters and as a race in this episode and beyond.

The Sultan

S4E26 already? 😲 This one's a banger for sure!

Bret Kay

I remember watching this when it came out... "Crap is Worf GONE now!?!" They pull everything back from the previous episodes and just knock it out of the park. One of my absolute favorite episodes!

Max Yoder

Cliff Bole? Klingon civil war? Female Klingons? The GOAT Gowron? Kurn? Romulans? Mega continuity? S tier all the way!

Phil Ken Sebben

I feel like this ought to be an S tier, but for some reason my heart just isn't there, so I give it an A+. Great stuff for Worf and Star Trek / Klingon lore and story. I love the scene where the crew lines up to pay respects to Worf as he departs the Enterprise. Great to see Gowron and Kern again, and now we are introduced to the Duras Sisters and..... Tasha Yar?? Great to have Denise Crosby back again.

Forbidden Donut

Another A-almost-S-tier episode. The failing here for me is the restoration of Worf's family name seems too brief and almost like an afterthought from the writer(s), but the Klingon scenes in general and the reveal of the Romulan at the end is pop-worthy even now.

Collin Freeman

Is it weird that I can predict what T.Audience members are gonna overwhelmingly vote for with at least 90% accuracy? I mean.. the results on this one is exactly what I predicted lol.

valen

Ronald D Moore + Cliff Bole? Yeah, this is gonna be a BANGER banger

Elway Simpson

Did you guys expect Worf, as a functional outsider to Klingon society, to literally go to war for his Captain America ideals? Getting his name cleared honestly seems like an afterthought to being valued and critical to Klingon politics.

Ross Townsend

I’m eager to hear your theories about the last ten seconds of the episode. S tier.

EnigmaticPenguin

Hard to go wrong with Klingon politics. Worf trying to find his place in the universe. Romulan plots who could hate this one. The end of this one left us all like.. WTF. Tasha?

Lt Dan I scream

To me, this is what Best of Both Worlds was hyped up to be. In my opinion, this is the better season finale. Especially taken with Part 2. I love how many plot threads it juggles.

Deep Red

This episode made me love Gowron and that love never subsided. He is, to me, the perfect Klingon--willing to get his hands dirty and not apologize for it. He treats Worf with respect, but only if Worf can help him. But he's also ruthless beyond ruthless. And Robert O'Reilly just hams it up without going overboard. Oh, and the second, longest summer break to figure out what was going on at the end.

wildhunt1973

"Humans have a way of showing up when you least expect them." and boy is that a double meaning

Dark Kronis

Worf! Worf! Worf! While not as strong as what they did for Riker in the Best of Both Worlds, this serves as a great turning point for the Klingon arc, and sets Worf up to retake the honor that was taken from him by the Durras family

Gregory

When that blonde Romulan steps out of the shadows I freaked out on first viewing this! Another long summer waiting to find out what it meant. Great episode and the season 5 premiere it’s excellent too. So many things you’ve asked for are in this episode. SSS tier for me

marty63026

KLINGONS! I love episodes that further expand on the lore of the Klingons, and we see the consequences of some of Picard's decisions. And the sisters of Duras. And of course, that last little reveal of what was teased at two episodes ago. It's not the best season finale, or even one of the best episodes overall, but thanks to some dramatic moments, and Patrick Stewart PROJECTING, it definitely finds its way into S-Tier for me.

John

A grade for me, very close to an S. What’s genius is they’ve taken elements from multiple seasons and episodes - some of the most memorable at that - managing to create a movie-level story that has a partial conclusion, but with a twist that makes you beg for part 2.

Paul Rymer

Another BANGER Klingon episode, and this time the Romulans are getting in on the action. It really reflects cold war politics, with two outside powers trying to influence the government of another. One candidate represents Federation interests, while the other represents Romulan.

Evan Guthrie

TNG playing the long game here taking plot threads from across a few seasons now and bringing them to a head, and that cliffhanger!

Darren Seal

"Women may not serve on the Council." Uh, Gowron, earlier this very season you offered a seat on the Council to K'Ehleyr. Ayway, another great season finale.

Steven Linden

I really like the Galactic politics at play here in this episode! Klingons and Romulans!

Dion James Pitman

Great episode, brilliant capstone to the season and another absolute doozy of a stinger/final moments. More great klingon politicking, return of Kurn and Gowron's beautiful eyes. Has to be a S-tier episode.

Mara

Another long-ass summer... that's what I remember thinking at the end of this one back in the day.
