A decent episode but it just gets wrapped up much too quickly for me. I can't give it more than a B rating. These beings at the center of the galaxy seem very similar to the "God" being in the Star Trek V movie, at least in terms of their location and the way they are presented. I have wondered if that being in the movie was some kind of renegade from this society.

Jim J

I think there's a huge HUGE difference between something like this, and V'ger. V'ger was so (inexplicably) advanced, it was impossible for humanity to decipher and comprehend. Everything that Barclay suggested or did was comprehensible by his fellow humans, was recorded by sensors, and was reproducible for study.

Jovet

If we were going to look for every single incident in Star Trek to increase the knowledge and expansion of human intelligence, we would be done at Star Trek the motion picture because of Viger. After all it was speculated regularly in 1984 that Viger was the reason for trans warp to have been developed In the cases of all higher, intelligent civilizations, including Viger relaying information to Star Fleet, I’m sure that in many cases the technology was above and beyond what they were capable of mimicking at the time, however, clearly as time goes on human experience and capacity increases as well as capability And those bits of knowledge that we were incapable of handling, or something that we will eventually gain control of, much like commander Ryker, figuring that one day he would learn that note on his trumpet that he was always missing in the episode where he was captured by the Space child that needed company I personally feel you’re being overly harsh on this episode

Thicketdweller

I’ve been biting my tongue so long to prevent myself from spoiling this episode for almost three seasons And I must echo my previous comment. This is really one of the best episodes of the series. Yes, we never see these characters from the center of the Galaxy again, But do we need to? the fact that they exist and contact was made was all that was necessary to complete the story. This episode was a trip and is one of the best to watch while tripping!

Thicketdweller

This is probably my favorite episode of the next generation, the growth on the Barkley character, the idea of the expansion of consciousness, the acting quality of Dwight Schultz was actually on the same level as the previous episode, but allowed him to show a lot more of the quality of his acting in this episode Plus, I think the statute of limitations is up since 1991, I dropped acid a few hours before this episode aired and it was by far one of the best visual experiences of the entire series

Thicketdweller

I am too late for this to matter but: Another prime example of society-changing technology introduced during an episode that fizzles out to nowhere.

Jovet

Barclay's is back love this guy, one of my favorite episodes , I bet you think barclays going to die. I love his smug face when crusher tells him him you might be the most advanced human being that ever lived.

DataL0re

This is S tier all the way for me. Great! I even like the giant alien head near the end.

marty63026

I think you guys will love this one, not only because it brings back Barclay, but the pacing and "what the hell is going on" mystery of it keeps you hooked throughout. There are some great special effects and visuals in this one, too -- the Argus Array and the subspace fold being two of them that stand out.

Jesse Manning

Love this episode! Barkley is one of my favorite recurring characters! To see him become something more and to then see his relief after all of it, priceless! S all the way!

Kate Courtney

I absolutely love this episode. “Aliens gives Reg the Adderall he’s needed all along.”

Christopher Boutwell

Obviously i love seeing Reg back. Even though Hollow Pursuits is an S, this only a high B. I much preferred his fantasy romance with Deanna, and sword fighting with tiny Riker😂. I do still really like this episode though, obviously because as i said, high B.

jon bolton

I was not that big a fan of Hollow Pursuits but this was an amazing episode. This was everything I love about Star Trek in one tight script. S tier for me.

Nick Sauer

I was personally astonished at the way Dwight managed to convey a TOTALLY different "Barclay" in multiple scenes: I agree, it's a testament to his acting chops. Truly magnificent.

Rhett Coates

Perfect Trek screenplay! Every character got something to do, the guest actor was elevated without stealing the show, we had conflict without 'conflict', and action without 'splosions. Oh, and we FOUND NEW LIFE AND A NEW CIVILIZATION, with it's own unique culture. What joy!

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

The first time I saw Dwight Schultz in TNG I still thought of him as his character in The A-Team. After this episode he was Barclay, one of my favourite guest stars.

Sean Richard

Barclay's back and you're gonna be in trouble. For me it feels very interesting "alien of the week" then reset like none of these showbreaking things ever happened. Not bad but not Star Trek's best.

Cirk Bejnar

The visuals of Barclay fused with the enterprise in the holodeck are really great and I still remember them vividly a decade after watching TNG.

Syl

Dwight Schultz able to convincingly play both the awkward Barclay and smooth confident Barclay within a single episode shows how excellent an actor he is.

JoeCensored

Brilliant! I lost count; how many Ron Jones-fueled action set pieces was that? And all with a singular wit. Maximum nerd boner!

rear adm. crackbiscuit

2024- Data opens a YouTube channel where he just does face reactions to movies and tv show acting. Gets 2 Billion subscribers and does it until a giant snow creature eats everyone around him and he gets discovered by the federation.

Sixto

Slightly odd ep but very Star Trek. It also serves as a redemption for the Barclay character. Despite his questionable holodeck activities in Hollow Pursuits, the crew are genuinely trying to build a bridge to him and help him break out of his shell. Of course the probe bypasses that process and makes him a super genius rizzlord. Despite being back to "plain old Barclay" at the end, I like the little hint that he carried something positive away from the experience.

Timothy Nikiforovs

What to do when Broccoli goes mega mind. Next time on Star Trek The Next Generation.

Matt Duborg

Always a guilty pleasure! One of those episodes I have a vivid memory of, and it's just fun to rewatch.

Ian Westcott

Barclay's back! 'Nuff said...

Ron Hubbard Jr

I fucking love this episode. That’s it.

Brian Moore

Barclay's back! He has changed since Hollow Pursuits but still has a long way to go. I have this ranked as "Excellent". And I never call him Broccoli.

KatWithAttitude

S. The best Barclay episode.

Michael Figueroa

One I always rewatch for many reasons, but especially for the little look between Riker and Beverley when Troi refuses to spill the tea on Barclay's pass. Frakes and McFadden crack me up every time.

Moonlander

Best Broccoli episode is best. It's a complete role-reversal of the established character in his first appearance. Good on the writers for taking the next logical step. Also, upon re-viewing Trek as I get older, I feel weirded out by how genuinely douche-y the writers appeared to cast Geordi. As a kid, I just liked him cuz he was Levar Burton and naturally lovable, but it kinda feels like the makers of the show went out of their way to assassinate his character with little nuances to make him seem petty, irritable, and overall awkward. But maybe I'm just being cynical.

Shortskirtsandexplosions

A nice return for Barclay. The computer interface he built was an impressive set piece. One wonders if the Cytherians ever encountered the Borg…

tyranusfan

It's hard to go wrong with broccoli.

Tony B

This episode is an S for me, but then I'm a big fan of both Barclay and the actor playing him. It's nicely worked out variation of a classic SF trope, and a perfect vehicle for this character.

DG

I love this episode, and I do appreciate the payoff. It's an interesting twist on the exploration angle of Starfleet's mission.

Who North America

Broccoli has no business being in StarFleet, let alone on the Enterprise.

Nerd's Gold

Everyone loves Barclay so it can't be worse than A, but the pay-off is a bit lame for S-tier.

Tim b

Brilliant episode for Dwight Schultz, giving Brent a run for his money when playing different “personas” Alex and Josh who would you say does it better? Brent as data/lore? Or Barclay stuttering not confident/Super confident commanding

LonghillAndy

Love this one. Barclay goes from being awkward and addicted to the holodeck - to a total rizz-lord and *becoming* the holodeck to save the ship. Fun, solid episode with a good ending, and great to see the character back with a solid sci-fi concept of exploration. Solid A.

The Ninth Doctor

He was already one of the most intelligent people on the enterprise. They show this in a lot of subtile ways.

Eric Wilson

One of my favorite episodes in all of star trek.

Eric Wilson

Really good ep, 7.4/10 B-Tier as I'm really picky about higher grades. Really good episode though, one that I like more than I feel I have reason to. Hence why I won't be explaining my reasons.

Steven Cressler

Absolutely love this episode! So much fun. A great character episode for Barclay while also tapping into TNG's beautiful appetite for wonder and exploration. The Cytherians are a clever reversal of the Federation's mission of "seeking out," even though they share the same underlying goal. Fun, adventurous, character-driven, and well-paced. Easy S for me.

Lovok

Broccoli turns into steamed broccoli with cheese

Prof Moff

Maybe, she's had a few flings upto now, one might say she's a bike... ;P

James Knight

He's definitely friend zoned though.

Greg Quinn

I like this one more than I thought.

Greg Quinn

Reg scores a date with Deanna, I bet that wasn't on your Bing Cards! =P

James Knight

A personal favorite of mine, because I love Barclay's character. I wish he had kept some of his intellect boost but for obvious narrative reasons he couldn't.

Paul

😉😅

Nolan

The scene with Albert Einstein is loosely based in real science. The actual math they do is nonsense, but a lay person can figure out that they are trying to solve the Theory of Everything, or String Theory. Basically they are trying to solve a real problem we have in physics today which is we actually have two main models for physics; one that works for subatomic particles, and one that works for everything else. We currently don't have a model that explains both. Of course, I think in a future where they can control subatomic particles to the point where we have transporters, replicators, and matter/antimatter warp drives, they probably already figured that out at some point. But I appreciate them trying to show a real example of higher theoretical physics.

BN13

I just love Broccoli. It would have to be an A for him alone. He represents all the underestimated geeky kids. Almost an S for me but more fairly I’ll put it in A.

Crankygrandma

CURSE MY FAT FINGERS! Fixed.

The Sultan

Great new episode for Baraclay. Goes from introvert to super human in a flash. Dwight Shults plays both wonderfuly.

Keith S

He's BACK. And with a new neurosis. Another new use of the holodeck too. A fun episode.

Nolan

You mean Season 4?

Nolan

I love Broccoli so damn much! He is a perfect audience stand in, and they always use him so well.

Max Yoder

Season 4 is where TNG starts to really establish that the show will have a bigger cast of recurring characters and between Mile's marriage, the Klingon stuff and Barclay's return the whole show just gains so much more storytelling and world building potential. A-level episode for sure, especially with the twist ending and the chance to see Dwight Schultz take Barclay through so many different iterations of his character.

The Sultan

Barclay is the most advanced human to ever live? Hell yes! Dwight Schultz absolutely kills it again. This one just isn’t S to me but it’s a very strong A

Phil Ken Sebben

Barclay Returns! And what a great follow-up to his previous great introduction. I love the journey he goes through in this episode, and it was a lot of fun watching him become superhuman and keep getting more powerful as the episode goes along. Also fun seeing Barclay and the others doing theater acting. Dwight Schultz once again gives a very good performance. S tier for me because I remember it fondly and always enjoy revisiting it.

Forbidden Donut

I imagine a lot of people, probably you guys as well, will give this episode an A, but it's an S for me. Mainly because I myself am very much like Barclay, and getting to see him super smart and confident is a vicarious experience for me. And Dwight Schultz really gets to show off his acting range here. The aliens being friendly was also a welcome change.

Ryan Caulfield

I have always liked this one. The idea of getting a boost in the brain was cool and I think the actor did a great job. this is one of the best of the season for sure. similar to clues there is a little bit of horror factor to having a super genius on the ship who can hear everything and has total control.

Lt Dan I scream

🥦🥦🥦🎓🎓🎓

Elway Simpson

Dwight Schultz’ believability, whether anxious introvert, suave suitor, or committed and calm genius, is off the freaking scale. Would you guys have guessed Broccoli’s next appearance would be just as strong as the last?

Ross Townsend

A-tier, great to see Barclay back, and a creative use of the holodeck to enable him to create the kit needed to ramp up his power.

Paul Rymer

Barclay’s back!!

Gregory

I liked this episode. Barclay is one of my favorite characters, Dwight Shultz plays awkward very well, and overall it's just a fun episode.

wildhunt1973

Maybe the creature in Star Trek V was banished for being a...d-head.

wildhunt1973

Every socially awkward nerd’s dream, to be transformed to a hyper-intelligent giga-chad.

Evan Guthrie

One of my "go to" episodes. I think Dwight Schultz does an amazing job of transforming the character of Barclay over the course of the episode - becoming almost unrecognisable as his former self. The ultimate payoff is a bit meh but it's fun getting there and the lighthearted final scene is perfect!

Alan F

I've always had a soft spot for Barclay, so I enjoy this episode, even though I find it somewhat meh in terms of plot. I can't remember whether you find him annoying or endearing, and since so much in the episode depends on him, I don't know how you'll feel about it. Solid episode, but not one of the greatest. It's a B-tier from me, even though I do like Barclay.

John

Adore this episode it’s so much fun, Dwight Schultz stealing the show, the ending is charming.

Darren Seal

In my personal headcanon, I've always believed the being that pretended to be God at the end of Star Trek V was one of these guys, a Cytherian. Think about it. Both were capable of endowing an individual with a sense of enlightenment and purpose, with a strong desire to take a ship to them in a place normally unreachable. They're also both floating creepy heads. Just sayin.

THE LORE!!!

I love this episode. Barclay becoming the most intelligent human is awesome to watch. Great acting from Dwight Shultz also, seeing a bold and confident Barclay is awesome
