PATREON EXCLUSIVE - Extended Discussion on Character Deaths

Comments

Wasted potential is a great way to put it. The nice thing is there are 3 more series in the Berman era of Star Trek that explore really similar themes from a character development standpoint. Of course there are more tragic stories too but some of what Alex and Josh are wishing could have happened with her is addressed in later seasons and the other series. That’s what’s great and TA, all of us that seen it all know how much they will love upcoming story and character arcs.

I love this little thread. My people within my people. 😂 Alicia deserved a few more episodes. K’ehleyr too. They didn’t need to take over their respective shows. But at least get a little more meat on the bone.

Shanelle

I have to agree that the wasted potential here is what makes her death so tragic. K'Ehleyr was a great character being portrayed by a fantastic actor and she had a lot of ties to one of the show's main characters. That's what makes her death so poignant. Part of me likens her death to the cancellation of "Firefly" after one season. Hear me out on this. It's the wasted potential here that makes "Firefly" so memorable. The show had some great moments, but it really shouldn't be on anyone's top 10 sci-fi series of all time lists. But it consistently is. Great characters, great actors perfectly cast, some really good stories, but not quite as much as you would have thought. But the potential? Through the roof. Now, with K'Ehleyr, the story beats were there all the way through. No mid or meh moments with her. We can see how great she could have been as a regular recurring character. That's why her loss hurts so much and why after only two episodes she remains one of the best guest characters on any Star Trek series EVER.

Paul O'Neal

Agreed 100%. After those couple of episodes I thought she was a FAR better match for Clark than Lana ever was and shipped that hard. Naturally they had to kill her off. Damn you Smallville!!!

Paul O'Neal

I suppose Dorf is politically incorrect in the modern era.

Tom Occhipinti

All I could think of when they mentioned Dorf. Hilarious to think of a little Alexander, Klingon version of Dorf lmao

Clyde Frog

Damn!. I was willing to bet money that you knew that......Of course, I am older than dirt, so I always assume everyone else is.

Mark Wood

I think my anger at her death partly comes from a "wasted potential" feeling, cause they could have done so much more with her. Like when it doesn't work out with someone you have been on a few dates with but really liked. Sometimes, those situations can bum you out more than an actual relationship falling apart.

THE LORE!!!

No we are not

Josh (Target Audience)

Same situation... A fan-favorite-female guest has great chemistry with a main character... "Let's kill her!!!" Look up scenes on YouTube of Alicia and Clark. If you aren't into Smallville, you will be.

THE Fans

You called Alexander "Dorf." Are you familiar with Tim Conway's character "Dorf"? YouTube it, if you want. (Completely unrelated to Star Trek, if you're not familiar with Conway.)

Tom Occhipinti

She is a great character no doubt about it and my favorite one too but her dying made this episode great!

Josef Nitervol

Nah guys we get it. You liked that character a lot. I recall you wanted her to be made a regular.

Lt Dan I scream

Why, Smallville, why??

Shanelle

When they killed off Sharon on Major Crimes I gave up on the show. Totally unnecessary.

Michael Metrick

I've seen this in a few other series, also. It's as if the writers all say "We need someone to die. Who do the fans love most? Oh, that's a good choice." RIP Alicia Baker.

THE Fans

In an effort to avoid spoilage, I purposely neglected to mention Alexander.

Darin Wagner

This was an era of television where the "death card" was seldom played and when it was it was event tv. Post 2000, the tv landscape has changed with showrunners not afraid to use this storytelling device more frequently.........

William McRae

I don't know if it was intended, but every time he said Dorf I could not help but think of Tim Conway's character Dorf on Golf.

Tye W

1:25 Unfortunately, everyone mourning the same for anyone who perishes is not a good idea. It is all humanity would ever do, and they would never ever amount to anything.

Jovet

LOL 🙂

Jovet

And what about Dorf, Darin? What about Dorf?

Timothy Nikiforovs

Kehlar, Duras and K'mpec all die in a single episode! But hey, we were introduced to the Vor'cha Attack Cruiser and Gowron... so I'd say it's an even trade.
