This one does not hold up well upon repeat viewing, for unavoidable reasons, but I liked it quite a bit the first time I saw it.

Angry Riker lines and other small moments elevate this one, but not enough to reach B for me. To Data after he remembers he can’t say can’t: “no you can’t”. To Picard: Shut up. As in close your mouth and stop talking. Data’s face when he’s trying to keep up with Riker’s questions. All the trombone scenes All fun moments but in a mediocre episode. I’d say the actors and maybe even director get credit for their heroic efforts to rescue this one, but the script fails them.

Paul Hess

Never happened, we made it up

Great point

marty63026

You guys will really like this one. I love the double (triple?) twist. I love seeing older versions of our crew, love Picards beard. I also like Data as first officer and Worfs unexplained scar (like Sulu in the naked time). Great stuff and very creative use of the Holodeck technology

marty63026

Captain Riker! Multiple fake-outs, within fake-outs! Minuet and Tomalak in the same episode! And Picard with a goatee... ...and a good mystery. A little clunky in parts and easier to solve this riddle than "Remember Me", but still good. B+

The Ninth Doctor

Also: the gray alien at the end was awesome.

Charlie's Illiteracy

Captain Riker: awesome. Captain Riker yelling at everyone: double awesome.

Charlie's Illiteracy

"it's pure fiction" "it's false" "it's a made up tale"

JB

I loved this episode! I remember when it first aired and having one of those genuine WTF moments in the intro. I also thought it was cool that this episode introduced Alyssa Ogawa (Patti Yasutake, the actress who played her, recently passed away).

Ron Hubbard Jr

Yeah, a B for me. 'It was all a dream', and you just know the poor kid was just dropped off at the nearest starbase... "Byeee!"

Axis 77

Yes, they’re trying to avoid all spoilers and often the title gives stuff away. Like every episode with Q in it as an obvious example.

Silk

Agreed

Collin Freeman

SHUT UP! AS IN CLOSE YOUR MOUTH AND STOP TALKING! Love it! Goatee Picard, Tamalok, I mean... this episode is a guilty pleasure A-tier to me. I can see where some may not care for it and thats a-o-k.

Chris Mickelson

We'll see future episodes that explore 'what if' and 'future crew' better than this by miles. Not sure if that retrospectively undercuts this episode, but even ignoring that this episode doesn't measure up. I mean, compare it against Yesterday's Enterprise where the mystery didn't need to string you along until the last 5 minutes to be engaging, and even though the 'what if' are erased it still manages to feel like it mattered because of how important it was to repair the timeline.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

It has callbacks, mystery, meme potential and what ifs... ...but it's pretty average in its execution of each. Nothing special. C tier It's basically a "It was all a dream!" episode, which hurts it.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

One of my favorites despite the romulans looking for the information would make no sense as Riker pointed out

Eric Wilson

B, it's above average but not great. It's weird and fun and gives Frakes some good material to work with. I predict they'll like it but it will strike a nerve and remind them that Riker needs to be a captain.

JGoss

Good point. 🧐

Guts

I love this one. One of my favorites. I have to categorize it as B if I’m being fair. But despite it not getting an A rating it’s a fav of mine and one I rewatch. It’s a banger. But it’s missing the extra oomph to put it in A. It’s close though. I predict you will really like it

Crankygrandma

Perhaps not. We shall see. But when I saw this episode back in 1990, after reading many comic book and sci-fi stories, I had a decent idea of what was likely going on, particularly once Tomalak showed up.

Collin Freeman

I'm going to give it a high B. It's well done and pretty memorable.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Sounds like we're pretty much in agreement on this one.

Collin Freeman

Shut up! As in shut your mouth and quit talking!

Troy Massey

Solid B, maybe B+.

s0rd3z

The reveal really stands out for me in this episode. I remember when I first watched it. All of us in the room watching immediately reacted with "HOLY S#!T!!!". Hands down the character with the biggest impact compared to so little screen time. (Yes, I'm talking about Minuet.)

Nerd's Gold

Then they'd have to look at the episode title before they watched the episode.

Nerd's Gold

I think adding the episode title would increase engagement

Guts

I think this one is really well done. Star Trek meets Inception.

Jovet

If this isn't a B episode, I don't know what is.

THE LORE!!!

This is the definition of a C episode of TNG, now that we’re past the first two seasons. It does a couple clever things but overall fails to impress and it’s hard for the audience to get invested in the “future”. Passing grade, no higher. But it does offer some interesting insight into Riker’s mind, what he actually really wants, and indirectly what Troi isn’t giving him. Man just wants his favorite music to be appreciated.

mrxak

It’s A Tier for me great mystery and I love Riker’s line “To me you’ll always be Jean Luc

General Trelane

A solid B episode

Josef Nitervol

B Tier. Even if you don't fully buy into that future, it still has enough twists and moments (Shut Up! As in close your mouth and stop talking!) to keep it interesting.

Andrew Buel

Solid episode that is a bit overrated by some. I enjoy it but it's not one I care to go back to very often.

Spencer Loften

Mystery episode plus Andreas Katsulas = A Tier. I'm a sucker for Mystery episodes. They'll always rate higher on the list for me, especially if the mystery (like this one) isn't explained in advance or by cut-aways to the Enterprise where they're describing what's going on. (Hello, "Remember Me" and "The Vengeance Factor.")

John

You're only "in" on what's going on right from the beginning in the sense that you either know that this can't be the real future, or something's going to happen that completely undoes everything by the end of the episode. Either Riker's going to get sent back in time, or none of this was real, or that future is going to erased. You have no idea WHY this future is off, or how it will get resolved. I guarantee you none of you knew what the last 5 mins of this episode were right from the beginning, and because of that, this episode keeps you invested because it still keeps you trying to figure out what's going on exactly and how it will resolve. I don't think Alex and Josh will have a problem with it in that regard.

BN13

It's a good episode. Just not up there with the best of them.

JoeCensored

It was a good episode, definitely rewatchable. I like that they start with an obvious twist and then switch it with another new idea. Overall, it was a solid episode and a fun watch.

Justin B

EXACTLY my sentiment. We know its a scam right off the bat. The future shouldn’t have seemed that different so that we weren’t totally sure if it was a different timeline or something. More subtly like Allegiance, where no one catches onto fake Picard until he does a few out of character things. But would Picard choose to look like Colonel Sanders? Doubt it. It was too obvious. I gave it a C. Entertaining, but nothing special.

Chris S.

This is one thats “decent” to me. I gave it a C because right off the bat, the audience knows its a scam of sorts. So it takes me out of it a bit. Later, there’s a twist that keeps it interesting, that elevates it a bit. I just didn’t totally buy in. It was a cut above average. To me anyway.

Chris S.

B-Tier only for the initial premise, set redesign and make-up.

Darin Wagner

Really enjoyed watching this one again, for the little details and to spot the big surprise cameo.

Paul Rymer

Because the boys will know what is going on, we'll be treated to complaints of being let in on the mystery instead of having to solve it.

Linda Stricker

I'm gonna predict a huge outburst at that specific part showing "mom". The guys did know her name. I predict a "What???!!" Maybe even an "Oh smit!" when they see her.

THE Fans

An interesting sci-fi premise, marred by the fact we, the audience, pretty much know it's a "charade" and what is likely going on. Not great, but decently executed.
