NEW TA PATREON CONTENT - TNG Patron Tier List

What tier do you rate Star Trek TNG S4E1?

Another NEW Patreon addition! Starting with TNG Season 4, we will have a Patron tier list in addition to ours! One of these will be released for each episode of the season, and it is available to ALL Patrons!

The polls will remain open, so feel free to revisit this once you watch our UNCUT reaction, YouTube edited reaction, or at any point throughout the season before our recap! They will all be put into a collection for easy access. We won’t be looking at this until after we watch the episode so any questions send us a message!

For anyone unfamiliar, you can consider S-tier an A+ and E-tier an F

500th vote! yay me.

NPC

It goes in a special tier above S. There are several S-tier episodes in the series, but this and S3E26 are next level.

LudicDave

It's an A for me because SO many future episodes (and a couple of movies) call back to this event.

Rob Gordon

A-tier for me. It's a decent resolution to S3 finale and I loved the Whoopi-Riker interaction and Riker as Captain. If they had gone a different way with Riker's character arc after this episode, this could have been a jumping off point for that. And I think the resolution to this Borg Cube's attack was a neat way to deal with an overwhelming threat. It would have been stronger if it led to more. I guess what I'm saying is this episode works as part of a 2-parter but because of the serialized TV format, it doesn't feel like enough came later that built on what happened here. Some things did (the next episode for sure) but not as much as it probably would have been if TNG was made today.

Kristina Weber

This episode is actually very anticlimactic IMO. You'd expect a bit more from the ending considering how intense the episode is. If you look at Best of Both Worlds and Family as a three part story then i'd say this is definitely the weakest episode in that trio. There's also the Riker stuff that is unresolved. I'd still say it's an A tier episode regardless.

Spencer Loften

They said somewhere they won't be reading this until the end of the season.

Sherpa Jones

As far as I'm concerned, they are a single three part episode.

Sherpa Jones

That one is going to be interesting because I see a lot of reviewers who end up hating that episode and trashing it. But it’s always been one of my favorites.

Bryce Ronee

We will mention it in the Patron takes section

Josh (Target Audience)

There seems to be some confusion on here with people whether its season 4, or just part 2. I consider “F” to be episode 1. But I was rating the season. Oh well. Either way, great stuff!

Chris S.

I thought they were not looking at this until after the episode, but I will delete in case I am in error. Apologies.

Ryan Caulfield

with the knowledge of knowing all the different star trek series and episodes, its A-Tier for me.

Alecco

100% E5 is one of my all time favourites, and I think one that will hit all of the sweet spots for these guys

John McDonald

BTW I love this idea. Wondering if it'll be mentioned as you go or kept until the end for the rating video. Either way it'll give you an idea of the popularity whether it's good bad or split and a great way to determine it.

Lincynity

Good list. 11001001 is also a big favorite of mine, not quite a 10 but very close.

JGoss

I can't wait for episode 5. It's the series' first of my favorite type of episode, of which there aren't many

BaNkR17

Bummer. Let me fix that.

Nerd's Gold

Season 4 is overall my favorite season of TNG.

Ron Hubbard Jr

Spoilers! They haven't watched Part 2 yet.

Ron Hubbard Jr

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is the Rating of Season 4 Episode 1! This isn't rating the whole of season 4, just part 2 of Best of Both Worlds. For me, it's an A. Still a great episode but there's at least one thing about it that keeps it from being perfect.

Andrew Buel

S4, to me, is the inverse of S3. With S3 the second half is stacked with the great episodes ("Yesterday's Enterprise", "Sarek", "Sins of the Father", "Hollow Pursuits", "The Offspring", and yes, "Deja Q", with "The Most Toys" barely missing this category) and then a few fine ones here and there (yes, "Captain's Holiday" rates an "It's fine" from me). The first half has much more "It's fine" episodes and some pretty good episodes interspersed with a couple great episodes ("The Defector", "Who Watches the Watchers"). With S4, the first half of the season is stacked with great episodes interspersed with good to decent episodes and the second half is heavy with good to decent episodes with a great one here and there. Then S3 ends with a great episode and S4 begins with one. I totally accept that this is just me, and some may have most or all their favorite episodes in the first half of S3 and/or the second half of S4. That's cool, but I'm firm on my opinion.

Drawkcabi

A for the season or epidode 1 of season 4? This is specifically for the first episode

Katie Jackson

I think this is for the first episode specifically not the overall season.

Greg Quinn

This may seem like an S-Tier episode when you first watch it, but looking back, this doesn't reach the same level as the real S-tier episodes. A-tier

Nerd's Gold

S

Adam Renfrow

That’s fun. My S-tiers so far: 11001001, Matter of Honor, Measure of a Man, Q Who, Survivors, Enemy, Yesterdays Enterprise, Bobw1.

John M.

Are these comments supposed to be spoiler free? Because there's a lot.

Bret Kay

i am goving Season 4 a B only because I know what is yet to be. Otherwise, it would be an A.

Paul D

A-tier for reasons I'm not comfortable sharing. (Yet.)

Jeffrey P

If anything, the self destruct is INconvenient. Like SG-1 (wanted) anytime they got their hands on a Goa'uld mothership: you manage to take a far more advanced enemy ship intact with (relatively) little effort or loss, you can learn from it!

Ragnarok

Honestly, for me, 3x26, 4x01 and 4x02 are a single S-tier story. The whole thing just elevated TNG to an unexpected level and effectively redefined what Star Trek could do going forward. I do think you had to be there at the time to really appreciate what a change this was for sci-fi on TV.

Dan J Reid

it was Alex, hasn't even seen it yet xD

Rj Simas

Ryan Caulfield

I can't wait for the one after that. Not that the next one isn't good, but I think they'll love how well both episodes are written.

wildhunt1973

I'll give it B because even though it's a fun and exciting episode, TNG is at its best when a strong well acted guest character appears and interacts with our ensemble cast. The Borg don't rate very well as interesting guest characters IMO. Shelby and Admiral Hanson made part 1 shine, but pretty much blended in for part 2.

Paul Hess

Please add tier polls for the previous episodes and TAS and TOS. (Pakled voice: “I like polls”)

John M.

When you just had a S-Tier example of the same class of episode to compare against, you just know what you watched despite being great wasn't everything it could have been.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

[A] I know what has come before and what's to come. It isn't S-tier TNG. But as a culmination of this part of Riker's arc, stepping out from under Picard, 'throwing away the book', and Riker being Riker using misdirection and subterfuge as was hyped and then shown in 'Peak Performance' was none the Trek in top form. A fine conclusion to an impossibly strong first half.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

it's close to S but I think it's A

Josef Nitervol

I am in the exact same predicament. I went with my first thought/impression.

Collin Freeman

S4E2 is like a reward to the hardcore fans I think. It’s so enjoyable to watch and exactly the right note to hit after the prior two episodes.

Paul Rymer

Just love the next one. It’s unique in the series, really looking forward to their reaction.

Paul Rymer

I prefer it in a lot of ways to part 1. S for me.

THE LORE!!!

A-tier because it's soooooooo damn close to some of the other bangers in this season alone. There are so many great A-tiers that it's hard to put some in an S-tier because it's splitting hairs for me.

Firekrys FWO

I went back and forth between A and B tier. There are some great episodes this season that I find far more rewatchable than this second half.

Steven Johnson

One of my favorite episodes, but I only give it A because the next two...

wildhunt1973

"Some men just want to watch the world burn"

JGoss

I had to go A-tier because I don't think any resolution of the S-tier part 1 could be made. But there is an S-tier moment: Picard is asked "What do you remember?" and the utter desolation with which Stewart says "Everything." is beyond S-tier.

Michael Schwarz

This is a good idea

Phil Ken Sebben

E for exemplary?

Timothy Nikiforovs

🪑

Timothy Nikiforovs

Who the heck voted E-tier?!

Juan Tutrífor

I voted A as well. Most of the season is fantastic, but like any show, there are a few that are average, but NONE that are bad.

Chris S.

This is A to me, a quintessential 9/10 episode. It's great, but lacks just a little *something* to put it at the top. To date, I would rank the following episodes as S: Conspiracy, Measure of a Man, Q Who, Defector, Yesterday's Enterprise, Sarek, BOBW1

JGoss

In any normal series this would be S tier, but for me personally there have been even better episodes so far (Measure of a Man for example), so I voted A.

Paul Rymer

A tier. It's not top notch, not as well paced as part 1 but a strong season opener and a satisfying resolution to part one.

Lincynity

I assume we're able to discuss the contents of the episode?

JGoss

A-tier for me. *Slightly* lower as its follows on from an epic Part 1, but still solid A-tier.

The Ninth Doctor

I’d say A only because S4E2 will comparatively gut punch you guys as an S episode!
