UNCUT REACTION - Battlestar Galactica S1E10 - The Hand of God

Radiation sickness?, or…. Some other kind of sickness Mental? Real payoffs in this episode,Finally felt Bought in at this point. I originally liked the idea of the reboot but felt it didn’t have it’s own identity until now, there is that name connection with the last ep of OG BSG I think that is truly the signpost we are using the framework of the OG but now we are going to really put our spin on it.

This show always gets me emotional. Almost as much as Star Trek. One other thing. The swearing around higher ups is 100% believable for the Military. I have attended plenty of meetings with Captains, XO's and higher enlisted personnel, and believe me. Those people swear more than anyone else. Every sentence usually has a few fucks or shits in them lmao. More realism from BSG and I love it.

Clyde Frog

As a Navy Vet who worked on F18s, BSG is incredibly accurate when it comes to the Military, and more specifically, the Navy. Minus the space technobabble, they are pretty spot on with most stuff that isnt sci-fi. Real modern fighter jets also have pedals. Alongside the amazing technology of radar and guidance systems, jamming comms and laser gyroscopes....sometimes simple human kinetic motion is the most effective tool. The pedals on an F18 control the rudder, which is the movable flight surface on the vertical stabilizer, the tail of the aircraft. They are used to quickly change direction to the left or right when doing maneuvers.

Please for the love of the gods. Finish the series. Its a new show several times!

Zee Doctere

The CIC and the room with the big battle board are separate and it was the latter they were discussng, I believe.

Nolan

I like how they have Baltar say that he is an 'instrument of God' and then look straight at the camera, as if to acknowledge the writers, the cameraman, and the audience as the creators/observers in a sense. It feels like a fun 4th wall break.

I'm watching most of these episodes for the first time too. This one is very entertaining. The acting is great. EJO is good in everything. It's a joy to watch with the boys.

T’Pynyn of Vulcan

I think the grit and darkness makes the happy moments so much more real

AzoriusMage

EJO is such a good actor he was so good in the OG Miami Vice there were a few episodes where he was the focus and he was so badass

AzoriusMage

I don't think you're going to see any goofiness from Adama in this entire series. That was sort of prerequisite for EJO taking the role. And, given the graveness and dire situation of the humans, it would not fit with Ron Moore's theme and tone that he set for the series.

Collin Freeman

Actually I've never served, but I have a friend in the Navy. I just like learning loads of random things, including stuff about the military.

Cameron Thacker

Much of it being real world military terminology. They are going to hear “sitrep” a whole lot in this series

Rod Gallow

Ha I beat you to it! You must be one of those knuckle-draggers! Damn I love the terminology used in this show!

Rod Gallow

The war room is called the CIC, a military abbreviation for Combat Information Center.

Cameron Thacker

FYI the “war room” is called the C.I.C. which stands for Combat Information Center.

Rod Gallow

i always question in a fleet with limited resources where they have the resources to make the models for the planing, do they have a working 3d printer?

Dark Kronis

I watched this series long before I ever heard the term "fraking" as it relates to oil drilling. Now I can't help but snicker every time I hear it on the news.

startrekiborg

What the frak!! I can't believe you don't get the use of frak. This is fraking unbelievable. You are fraked up. You are fraking hopeless. I'm fraking out of here. ;;;

This was always my favourite episode of S1, and easily in the top 10 for the series, not that the season finale is any slouch either. This is an example of what BSG does best; tearing down the morale of the viewer with a long stretch of depressing episodes where everything seems to be progressively getting worse, and then they give you a win that makes it all worthwhile, and so much more rewarding for having to wait for it. It also introduces the Adama family theme and shows why Bear McCreary was such a brilliant choice to do the soundtrack. The song after the mission is accomplished is called Wander My Friends and is sung in Gaelic. Here's the translation. Wander my friends, wander with me Like the mist on the green mountain, moving eternally Despite our weariness We'll follow the road Over hill and valleys To the end of the journey Come on my friends and sing with me Fill night with joy and sport Here's a toast to the friends who have gone from us Like the mist of the green mountain, Gone forever I made a mistake in my comment last episode saying Helo was starting to suspect Sharon. I forgot he still thought the Six that she shot was human. Seems odd he wouldn't have asked. Like "hey, so why'd you shoot that woman? Was it cus she was kissing me? Like I get being jealous, just look at me, but maybe we shouldn't be helping the cylons wipe us out". Eh, maybe he did ask and she brought up the guy he shot in the miniseries and they left it there. I also get a laugh out of how Baltar has been so critical of anything to do with religion, but as soon as it strokes his ego to do so, he's all bought in. We've been seeing Lee and his dad slowly start to reconcile over the course of the season, and that lighter scene was another big step in that process. With everyone questioning whether Lee can get it done because he's "not Starbuck", his dad is the one guy who never doubted him for a second. This episode is my favourite of the season because it basically slingshots you into this euphoric mood at the end. The way the whole episode seems to be this long shot chance at scoring some fuel, but they just have no choice in the matter, and then when the mission starts they're losing vipers and pilots all over the place. It just seems like everything has gone to hell, until they reveal the vipers hiding in the freighter. Seeing the colonials finally get a real win, and seeing Lee step out of Starbuck's shadow, it makes all the pain leading up to it worthwhile.

Timothy Nikiforovs

Any aircraft uses pedals. Rudders are controlled by pedals on either side of the stick, and are used in concert with all other controls continuously. Fighters have a lot of resistance in those pedals to make actuation predictable under high G loads.

Aaron Wells

Action and special effects serve the plot. 10 episodes in we have enough character and stakes for the budget to really elevate whatever it touches now. And thank the gods for that, because 6doff space fighting and trench running is just so unlike anything seen before. And it doesn't stop being a treat.

#MaxwellDidNothingWrong

Towards the end of Battlestar Galactica's run KFC started selling a "Frak Pack" that included several different items. Of course, some people took that and started referring to it as a "Fuck Bucket." Since that's essentially what the term meant. (But apparently it sold well and got favorable reviews, so... who knows? Maybe the guy who came up with the name was more clever than we thought.)

John

This is generally considered the best episode of the season, and I would agree with that ranking.

Michael Ducharme

You two missed something in the Sharon and Helo scene.

Ken R

In his podcast commentary, RDM said this was their "Big Mac" episode. The big tasty burger with more spectacle in it than they had so far, why they maybe cut back of SFX in previous episodes so they'd have the budget saved for this carb loaded treat.

Nolan

The show is owned by NBC Universal (Peacock) which also owns Syfy Channel although the 1978 series was broadcast on ABC. Similar weirdness as Star Trek, which is now owned by CBS Paramount although the 1966 show was originally broadcast on NBC.

I thought you guys would like this one. nuff said

Last weeks episode was the one that got me hooked when I watched originally. We have gotten all of the character introductions out of the way so now the story can move faster. Plus by now the show was getting the ratings to justify the budget which frees things up. Rebooting BSG keeps getting brought up every couple years. It’s owned by universal. I know at one point there was discussion of Amazon buying it, but that was before universal launched Peacock.

Jonathan

Like you said, the show is so grim that seeing the humans get a win here feels that much better. This is a contender for my favorite episode of the series for that reason. After almost a full season of just running away and trying to stay alive, this is the first real win we get.

Jeff Cornell

This was the episode that really pulled me into the series when it was first shown, and then the next three got me hooked. I'll be interested to see if you guys feel the same way.

Jeff

I love this episode. The introduction of the celtic Adama family song, the awesome Death Star trench run and the story telling device of the WW2-style wargame table. This one is a major banger. It's a big spectacle battle episode, but there's some really nice character stuff between father and son. This episode was my introduction to the series in 2008 as a classic Galatica and it got me hooked, despite not knowing half of what the fuck was going on.

EnigmaticPenguin

Hope you guys decide to continue with the series. Easily up there with DS9 in terms of amazing characters and storytelling.
