Do you think hearing how much better Season 3 was set up your expectations too high and that maybe you were more disappointed by some things as a result? Thinking about the "shaving against the grain" comment, I think this comes from you guys being much more generous with seasons 1 and 2 then people expected but much harsher on season 3. It does seem like you are slightly grading on a curve versus expectations. For example, "The Outrageous Okona" is often cited as one of the worst epsiodes of Star Trek, for largely having a Hans Solo built up solely by showing not telling without him actually doing anything badass (how many times do they talk about how badassy this guy is) then I guess the "twist" is... he's actually a nice guy? Um, ok. Then the B plot was Data trying to learn humor... from Jo Piscopo, who was a one note guy who had a character on SNL that consisted of exaggerrating a stereotypical way a very tiny number of people who live in specific parts of NJ talked. The idea that would be a "memorable" comedian was ludicrous even at the time as his schtick was already on its way out... it would have been like Data getting humor lessons from Pauly Shore. A great concept for a sub-plot with basically nothing in execution. Anyway, you guys were mostly positive on that one, compared to something like say, "The Most Toys" which though you said you liked it, had almost nothing but criticism. I think that's why people are thinking you are "shaving against the grain"- I don't think your reactions are anything but genuine, but it does seem like prior expectations from what you've heard DO influence your subjective opinions or experiences, which happens with everyone. Like I had heard nothing but how awful Superman Vs Batman live action was, and when I actually saw it, I thought "huh, this isn't so bad" Expectations actually change subjective experience. For that reason its probably god you've heard nothing about season 4 and beyond. Personally thought its a ways away i am excited for you to start watching DS9, my favorite of trek (though it doesn't work without the world building of the previous two series) and though it isn't a perfect show, it attained a height trek never reached aagin. It's alsolike TNG and unlike TNG in that it takes two seasons to find its footing, but its unlike TNG in that the awesomeness was there from the start, in the first season though they just use a lot of "TNG" style scripts which are ok enough but not what made DS9 special. It gets more consistent and consistently reaches heights in season 2, and from season 3 on its all killer no filler. Ds9 is by far the most "Game of Thrones" Star Trek. In fact, some writers from DS9 went to work on Game of Thrones. Past season two, Piller and the staff basically had total freedom from network interference, and the result shows. Knowing what you guys like, I think you will love it. "Midnight Mass', there's A LOT like that, complex interstellar politics, complcated and flawed characters with great dynamics, a combination of episodic and serialized storylines... IMO, the only other thing Trek has done that comes close is Picard Season 3.

It's so subtle you hardly notice, but if you go backto the pilot, he had more of a golden hue to his white makeup, but by The Best of Both Worlds, the hue is gone, and the makeup is pretty much just white. It's hard to pinpoint when this happens though.

In fact, the entire cast seems to age significantly between seasons 2 and 3 then look pretty much the same for the rest of the show, but its especially noticeable with Riker. Like his cheekbones got puffier. Plastic surgery?

Outside traditional networks still doing this (and even that's now been reduced down to 22 episodes a season), the television landscape has changed with cable and streaming platforms doing runs of 8-10 per season.
