PATREON TUTORIAL

Josh gives tips on how to sync for UNCUT reactions & navigate the website to easily find what you need.

That's what I've been doing; it meets with satisfying results most of the time - until TA doesn't include a quick scene take at the beginning of an act (ST: TNG). But the other method that also seems to work pretty well is the "ghosted" image (picture in the picture mode) that allows me to sync up the TV to various colors, hues and/or shot changes that are obvious even with the ghosted image.

I usually play you guys on an iPad or phone and sync to the episode on the big TV. And if I am out I use iPad and phone with an earbud from each. Lol

Unfortunately, for the US version of Netflix, all Star Trek has been removed. Paramount is the only option, besides Prime, but you still go through Paramount.

So, as the guy who's been having trouble with synching, I feel like I should speak out as others might also experience similar problems. Two things: Instead of Paramount+ I use netflix to watch along. Netflix does have slightly different runtimes but it's no problem to synch the reaction to it. It's annoying a little bit because on netflix you can't see the exact minute/second of where you are in the vid. The best indication I could find was to mouse over the point in the slider and that's inaccurate but no problem with syncing after getting used to it. Secondly, I found that the picture in picture mode I've been using all along had a bug with the patreon website or the browser I guess? It leaks memory and starts to lag halfway through the episode and then just freezes. I'm usually forced to close the window and reopen the reaction and synch back to where I lost it. This has been the major problem I'm having. I believe it is caused by chrome. Currently testing on explorer.

Made a post on YouTube a week or so ago. BSG & GOT edited reactions will be back in a couple weeks.

Josh (Target Audience)

Last edited bsg was 2+ weeks ago? Is that not a thing anymore? Thanks

Anyone watching using DVD's in the UK will certainly get sync issues as the DVD's are sped up due to NTSC to PAL conversion. Use Bluray or Netflix in the UK.

I've found Firefox to be the best browser for the "picture in picture" feature, because it keeps the play controls up on the little screen as well as the main video, so if you get out of sync, you can use both the big and little screen pause buttons to help get back in sync, all while keeping the main video in full screen mode from another tab (if that's how you prefer to watch it).

Speaking as a Video Editor and Audio Engineer, I can appreciate all the behind the scenes effort to making all this happen! I can appreciate video tutorials to even going wayyy above and beyond. This is a understatement amount of work and especially genuine care... like audio sync, lower thirds, green screen, and a YT edit which is probably the tedious part of all. Then going in to be interactive in the comments?! Bruhhs Props!!! Seriously, thank-you... it does not go unnoticed! Fantastic Team, 'cause burn out can be real! "Tell me when I'm telling lies!" lol (I still have a "rendering couch" for every project to take a nap on especially on Davinci Resolve lol.)

Gordon Freeman

I agree. I always look for the camera angle changes to match up if I am not synced

Welcome Paul!!

Welcome to the fold!

Josh, it was nice of you to make this tutorial. I am sure it will take a bit of trial and error but if all else fails, I can always watch the regular YouTube video release. πŸ™‚

Thank you so much for this tutorial. The Pic-in-Pic instructions are very helpful.

I find if I'm watching it on Blu-ray I can usually synch up during the opening piece of dialogue and it'll remain synched throughout, but if I'm watching on Netflix the synching always falls out because the play rate is not the same as the Blu-ray; Netflix always ends up ahead. Which is a tad annoying. So I tend to pause a unpause a lot when your little picture-in-picture bit of the episode comes up.

Andy Frankham-Allen

I was joking, you’re fine

I wasn't aware of the picture in picture. Useful info. Ideally I wanted to cast patreon on my mobile phone to my large lounge TV synced with paramount+ but not sure this is possible? So I open/split into 2 windows on my desktop pc like many others and find this method quicker to set up and sync.

Andrew Bassey

Uh, I just saw it as using a different video player for content that I had paid for (Audience Member tier), which was easier to get synced up than Patreon's built-in player, I didn't realize it would be considered ripping paywalled content. If this is a problem, I'm certainly willing to try another way to sync up the videos. This was just the easiest way I could come up with after trying to sync patreon on my phone to the blurays was too awkward. EDIT: I see now that since I joined, downloading was added as a specific perk for the higher tier. I’ll go ahead and upgrade to that tier.

I joined the patron just in time ! Lol joined yesterday and this vid is out. Today! 🀟🏾🀟🏾🀟🏾🀟🏾 thanks for the video !

I usually either put the Patreon vid on one monitor and Paramount+ on the other or I put them on one monitor with the Patreon video picture in picture. When you do the 3, 2, 1, go I wait 1 second after the go to click play and it lines up with the P+ version.

Doug

I rely entirely on your fuzzy image of the episode playing at the bottom. The time code sync is not always accurate, but at a glance I'm able to see how off I am at any time, and it playing at the bottom isn't distracting at all otherwise. BOBW was synced perfectly, but after a few minutes, I noticed your reactions were off by a beat, so seeing the video and hitting pause for a second fixes that.

JGoss

I use a Chrome extension to boost the volume of the Patreon video to 300%, it's a lot quieter than most other videos I watch

Doug

In a normal circumstance I would ban your account for blatantly admitting you are ripping our paywalled content, but I admire the level of effort it seems you go through so I’ll let it slide.

Josh (Target Audience)

I find your reaction video audio to be very quiet, and I have to turn up my system speakers much louder than usual.

Sherpa Jones

I have bluray rips of the episodes, then download the reactions with yt-dlp, and use a program called GridPlayer that lets me play two videos at the same time in sync. It also syncs video controls. I start the reaction alone (by clicking on its separate play/pause button), then wait for Josh or Alex to say "go", at which point I hit spacebar to pause both videos. The TNG episode is already paused so it stays paused. I then hit spacebar again, and both videos start playing at the same time. Any time I get a hint that the sync is off a bit (it tends to drift over time), using the blur or the visual sync, I use shot change transitions to figure out which one is ahead, and I briefly pause and unpause just that video. If I need to step away, I can hit spacebar to pause and unpaues both videos without losing sync.

Adam Zey

The picture in picture is helpful. I have used 2 separate browsers doing basically the same thing, but I think your way might be a little easier. Thanks!

Collin Freeman

That's pretty much how I do it with the Blu-rays. I do appreciate the picture-in-picture.

KatWithAttitude

why dont you just use google drive, most other reactors i follow use drive and it lets them have the whole episode in the bottom corner of their reaction vid and just link it on patron it been super rare to have a video removed,

Dark Kronis

I sync to a sound in the first few seconds. Usually the end of Picard's captain's log for Star Trek.

Mike Rogers

I wanted so much to come up with one of my typical smartA comments, but just can't. You should sell this help vid to other reaction channels. Other channels are rough to follow, TA has always been easy for me but this was good for people not used to full reactions. ................................... damn still nothing.

Prof Moff

Thanks guys, still useful stuff as an experienced patreon and IT user, I had no idea patreon had picture in picture for example. As for syncing, that's a nice way to do it. I find the "3,2,1,go" isn't really helpful, it seems to be a few seconds off. I guess there's some sort of latency having an effect, but if I start based on 3,2,1,go, I'll be a few seconds ahead of you. I find for me the easiest way is to base of the 3,2,1,go, but after go, take a deep breath (very precise, I know) then hit play at my end. After that, I adjust based on the audio if needed.

FPG

Excellent information. I wasn't even aware of the picture in picture option. I've been watching uncut Next Gen using my desktop computer hooked to my 55 inch TV. I just split the windows and watch the reaction with Paramount +, side by side.

Matt G Cowart

He must know how to sync it. He saw your reaction to SAREK. Why else would he drop out?
