Steven Universe s4 eps1&2 Kindergarten kid & Know Your Fusion

The Looney Tunes Episode!!

Steven Universe s4 eps1&2 Kindergarten kid & Know Your Fusion

Comments

oof I messed up the enter. but YES it's just intentionally written to be...confusing? Not hard to follow, but hard to justify? Or follow the logic on?? Using incompatible tests. The strength test not being used as a general reference even though there's no way Smoky would be as strong as Sugilite - that's what I thought while watching. Self-deprecation humor (at least from 0+0), and... why only Pearl? Jachariah covered other stuff I hadn't thought too much about, but I like their comment but yeah KYF is...Sardonyx is my favorite (at least the waist rotation) but this episode.... is why I pushed it back until ep 6 came out, because this week is where THINGS happen - little dread.

Jasmine

30:10 I had the exact same reaction. Bird yo-yo. Strength! And then the strength thing -- why would that be bad? It's just a strength test like a reference. There should be no bad or good result. -- no one but Sardonyx is asking Smoky for a high score. All the things that Pearl -- that's only 1 so far though? Also the Sugilite reactions are....wtf? Every result is "loser" except Sugilite?? Breath of fire -- 1. elemental mix. 2. why is 34:03 (Comedian -- self-deprecation. From p early on). I thought they intentionally unfused until they seemed surprised as everyone else. (36:10 why is it all on Pearl?_

Jasmine

20:00 yepp -- and even in Alone Together in S1, Steven and Amethyst were closest to being "in sync" with their dances and vibes (though Pearl then reminded them to be serious)

Jasmine

Sardonyx was trying to see what abilities Smoky has BESIDES her weapon. Sugilite, Opal, and Alexandrite are all fusions that Amethyst is a part of, so Sardonyx wanted to see if there was any common ground. Sardonyx also suggests that Alexandrite's fire breath COULD come from Amethyst, who can produce purple flames from her whips and her burps. Sardonyx definitely still messed up by hijacking Smoky's thing, it was definitely insensitive, but the logic that an ability that another Amethyst fusion has COULD be shared by Smoky makes sense, that's why Sardonyx was doing all that

Jachariah

I like Kindergarten Kid as a wonderful tribute to the classics. Know Your Fusion, however, is kind of uncomfortable to watch. I mean, it makes some sense, as Sardonyx is such a show-off based on her composition of Pearl and Garnet. Garnet is focused on herself to the exclusion of others, and Pearl is very theatrical. It just still feels wrong that she can't tell that each fusion is unique, and to force Smoky to try to measure up to the unique talents of the other fusions is hurting Smoky's feelings. I'm glad Pearl and Garnet learned their lesson, and did some praising in the end, but Smoky also deserved a sincere apology for both hijacking their show-and-tell, and making them feel like shit.

dannyzee123

I will forever hate that this is the last episode we see sardonyx

Spectur—V

Based on the comments on Patreon the comment section on YouTube is going to be crazy 😂

PinkPonytail _Girl

I think you are on to something. Continuing the thought, the combined Sardonyx' personality is one that is very inwardly focused, a quality that both Garnet and Pearl show in different ways. The entire room was focused on supporting Sardonyx to the exclusion of all else. Ironically, the talk show host stage was only halfway appropriate. Sardonyx likes the spotlight, but is a terrible interviewer. She lacks the insight to relate to and explore an unknown personality. Her only points of reference are fusions and abilities she already knows. The moment she realized an interview of someone new was beyond her ability to relate to others, the fusion destabilized.

Dark Siri

Remember, a fusion isn't just made of the best parts of two gems, but also their worst parts. Their strengths and flaws both get magnified, and new ones are created in each category. So Sardonyx's personality flaws are a combination of Pearl and Garnet's, where you can see how Ruby's passion and impulsiveness exacerbates Pearl's tendency to take things too far and obsess on a specific topic, and Sapphire alone isn't enough to counterbalance both those two when Sardonyx really gets going on something. Interestingly, you get the same thing with Sugilite. She's so destructive and difficult to control because Amethyst and Ruby are a super volatile combination of recklessness and directness with little forethought. At least, that's how Amethyst and Ruby were back when we first saw Sugilite. They've grown since then, so I wonder how Sugilite would be now?

AbsurdToastling

And I feel like it really sets up the structure of season 5 with how arc-heavy it is.

Gone

Lapis's time trapped in the mirror and stuck with Jasper have used up every single fuck she had to give.

SweetCandle

I really wish I could go into detail without spoiling it😭 but please just trust me or look it up I promise I know way to much about this show

Caitlin

I’m telling you it’s confirmed not true by Rebeca sugar. Just search your questions and look for an answer specifically from her. Her art books actually answer a ton of questions

Caitlin

Also to be fair to Sardonyx--the three fusions she was testing Smokey's capabilities against were all Amethyst fusions, so there's a *kernel* of sense in seeing if there are any analogous abilities.

Tristan Haller

I mean, it could very well be true: 1. Do you remember Garnet ever asking a question in the entire show? and 2. In the episode "The Answer" s2 ep something, the backstory of how garnet came to be, when saph and ruby refused and encountered Rose, she interrupted what Garnet was saying and said "Don't ever ask questions" or something like that.

olek2501

10:50 - This may be a goofy Roadrunner-inspired filler episode, but it does inform us how durable Peridots are. Kind of like how they snuck Steven learning to consistently use his shield into the Uncle Grandpa episode. 11:52 - This line is a reference to Yogi Bear's catchphrase, "I'm smarter than the average bear." 13:05 - There are a *lot* of marshmallows (I'm sorry, "confectionery puff-rocks") in that little bag. 16:32 - It's cute that Peridot considers the barn "home" now, instead of Homeworld.

ArcticBanana

No I'm pretty sure that's just her accidently thinking her theories are true/have been confirmed via wording from other characters(the pearl and rose ownership one)

Phoenix Mackenzie

Totally agree. It seems like the consensus is s4 is the weakest, but its good episodes are DAMN GOOD

peachy af

I love when she theorizes. But someone at some point told her rose quartz has powers she shouldn’t know about. And I think someone must’ve said something about the pearl rose relationship being “toxic” and that’s why she assumed ownership. I swear I love when she has wrong theories and I wouldn’t say anything about them. I just hope her girlfriend corrects that one thing

Caitlin

No.. she doesn’t think it’s a theory. In earlier videos she said it as a fact and I think that’s because of a “spoiler” comment. If she does theorize that then that would be different. She actually has said that pearl belongs to rose quartz and that she knows that

Caitlin

No it’s not true. I can explain it I know wayyy to much on the topic of you want to dm me (if that’s something you can do on Patreon) she might not ask questions in the show because she in a confident person. We do see her “question” her fusion time she unfused

Caitlin

I've read in multiple places that that sentence was kind of a meta joke, because part of Garnet's character info that was supposed to remain consistent through her writing was that she didn't ask questions. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I think apart from The Answer, when Rose told Garnet to "never question this," we haven't seen Garnet ask questions ever. So it is a consistent thing about her character

T. rex

This pair of episodes is kind of a miss for me. This season is a little all over the place, with some of my absolute favorites with maybe some of the closest the show gets to duds. I think this one is the only time a video will have two "meh" episodes (in my opinion) and even a "meh" Steven Universe episode is pretty good by other shows' standards, it's just a pretty hard comedown after season 3 where the arc stuff was aces and the townie stuff was a lot of fun.

Gone

It's more of a speculation based on information gained later that I will not mention. It could be true, but there's nothing that outright says it

Hulk Lover

@ Caitlin please stop trying to deny or confirm any of her theories..... she'll learn as she goes..... that's the point of watching...... this is why she doesnt read comments here anymore

peachy af

I’m hoping maybe her girlfriend will read her some of these? I’ve commented on YouTube before but it’s so far off from where she is. I also hate thats she’s under the impression that pearl is rose quartz pearl. I don’t know if someone told her that but it’s not true and hurts me to hear haha. If she has these wrong notions of how powerful rose is I worry about the twist

Caitlin

No that’s incorrect. Without spoilers I can’t explain why, but there was only one order given by her to one person. Confirmed by Rebeca sugar. She did tell garnet not to ask questions but question regarding her fusion. And garnet can still think and ask questions she just doesn’t doubt her fusion

Caitlin

Man, I CAN'T wait to watch Mosco react to Last One Out of Beach City

Arianod

Aw, thanks-- but it's really just me using, like, a thousand words to fangirl about what they've basically said with like a dozen. Those lines from Smokey about zero plus zero and two wrongs-- ouch. What an emotional gut-punch, to see that, even at what might usually be seen as gems at their best, through fusion, Smokey is also *made of weakness*. Or at least the feelings of such. Which, like... what a *harsh* foil to a fusion like Garnet, who's made of love, ya know? I figured that maybe a mod will mention something here or there, from comment stuff, but it's mostly just an excuse for me to be all over-excited about my love for good character writing. Admittedly forget sometimes that I'm not the only one who enjoys reading patreon comments, so the wall of text I always end up with is a bit embarrassing, tbh. >/~/<

Lyn

Exactly! It's just so sad!! Which, like, jeeeez does the writing for setting that up with an entire episode, just to then not even *solve* that, and just, like, cut away because the room falls apart, just... oof. Especially since we've *seen* those insecurities for so many episodes prior, all leading up to this point, too! Cuts way too deep, and they just need all of the hugs. T^T

Lyn

Also I assume that person was trying to set up for the reveal episode- but it is frustrating because it's just not true

Wren Williams

She doesn't read patreon comments. When this episode comes out on youtube- I suggest commenting it

Wren Williams

Ive heard people say it all the time though? I mean as far i know garnet doesnt ask a single question throughout the entire series

peachy af

Not toooo fond of Gem Harvent either, it's definitely better than the ones mentioned and give an interesting piece of lore but its still not my favorite. But after she hits those low episodes it just takes off after that!

peachy af

Make sure to copy this into Mosco's YT comments, it's great!

peachy af

in the 2nd episode you watch, she couldn't ask because she saw something with future vision. Someone shouldn't have told you that because its entirely untrue.

Caitlin

I usually skip these episodes on rewatch lowkey LOL s4 has the most "eh" episodes compared to other seasons but it has probably one of my favorite arcs of the entire show + the BEST townie episode in the show

peachy af

Really not my favorite episodes. I do appreciate the character development we get for Peridot in Kindergarten Kid but the Roadrunner references feel out of keeping with this show's usual sense of humor and are just a bit too meta. And then in Know Your Fusion, I would have much rather spent more time on Pearl and Garnet's individual reactions to meeting Smoky rather than mostly focusing on Sardonyx, a character we barely know, getting to know Smoky through the talk show gimmick.

dys

I guess Sardonyx can't help making everything about herself. The fusion of Pearl and Garnet is just... too much ^^

Arianod

Dude what a good breakdown u verbalize what they express in this ep so well! I know Mosco isn’t reading the Patreon comments atm but this was great to read and I hope she can too! :3

Beeboop

So Mosco saw a Looney Tunes themed episode and a fusion recap “talk” show episode. Like she said with Steven Universe, you just never know what to expect. 🤣💜

Liam Gradwell

16:28 Home is where the Lapis is ^^

Arianod

Sardonyx's flaws definitely show in this one, but it's definitely not on just Pearl's personality showing here! Garnet gets caught up in her own head/ gets carried away a lot as well. Sugulite is a great example of Amethyst and Garnet getting to be "too much". Sapphire and Ruby's big fight showed the same thing (Sapphy looking into the future and ignoring the present was such a good moment of that). In the rewatch I'm sure this'll hit way different but the episode was definitely supposed to get us to focus most of our attention on the yoyo, and more on what Smokey says/how they speak about themselves.

Peluche

Holy crap, I never caught onto the Coyote and Roadrunner connection X'DX'DX'D

Arianod

^^^^^^ all of this! Amethyst and Steven's shared feelings make me sooo sad ;-; their self esteem is so low and it hurts so bad

Peluche

Remember that fusions are a combination of two or more Gems. Which means they share their flaws. Both Pearl and Garnet mean well, but have a tendency to get caught up in their own heads. They aren’t good at reading rooms.

Tasia Cooper

So... "Know Your Fusion" wasn't really about the yo-yo, nor was it about the weapons at all. They were to see what common thread there was to Steven and Amethyst, as well as what sort of secondary powers that might entail. After confirming that Smokey didn't have precision like Opal, nor strength like Sugilite, nor fire breath like Alexandrite, the important bit is revealed: that Smokey is a connection based on shared feelings of failing to measure up, which leads to a "there's nothing special" kind of moment when they're forced to compare with other fusions. It was never about the yo-yo. Smokey wouldn't have been able to do those things regardless of using it, because the *point* is that Smokey *doesn't* have any intrinsic powers that make them greater than the sum of their parts, because, as Smokey themselves say, "I guess zero plus zero equals zero." Steven and Amethyst were excited to show off what Smokey can *do*, but the point is that they aren't exactly eager to examine who they are beyond that, because it's a fusion that, while nonetheless still built on mutual trust, is also fundamentally an expression of their mutual insecurity. It's right there in their character design: again, as said by Smokey, "they say two wrongs don't make a right, but I guess I'm living proof that THAT isn't true." The second right arm? Is there to *express* that feeling of wrongness. And yet also, if they were to dig a little deeper, we'd maybe dig into how that insecurity belies a *need* to "make a right of two wrongs." Buuuut that all starts from, sure, acknowledging the yo-yo. Listening to that would definitely have been the better place to start-- but, well, the point is just that Sardonyx posed a question of "so who are you, beyond the yo-yo?" and Smokey pretty clearly answered "nobody." And that just reinforces a lot of the themes we've seen ever since the start of Amethyst's "vs Jasper" kinda arc, and the kinship she and Steven have had on the topic ever since their "duel of the worst." I mean, think back to *how* Steven and Amethyst fused. "Us worst gems gotta stick together," followed by a hug. It's their insecurity, coupled with trust mutual understanding. And, yes, that *does* mean they end up with one of the most creative, flexible weapons... but it also means that their "deeper selves" have a profound feeling of "lacking" that manifests as a lack of meaningful secondary qualities. ... Anyways. Just some very neat (albeit sad) characterization, and all that, which felt like it was worth trying to highlight. Worried a bit that the frustration about ignoring the yo-yo kinda overshadowed the entire episode's purpose, as it's really just compressed to those two throwaway lines from Smokey, at the end, and no one *in* the show ever really acknowledges any of that. On the other hand, absolutely thrilled with how quickly Mosco picked up on the road runner episode's influences, as well as even the detail of Garnet laughing to herself before agreeing to let Peridot try. And, of course, we get more "powers developing in parallel to character-growth" with Peridot's first time bubbling a gem-- as well as a neat bit of explanation and stuff with how bubbles are sent "home." Super cute touch! Ah, still super thrilled with the reactions, to be clear! Just have my shiny-rock reflex when I'm worried someone might've missed a clever bit of writing that I thought was neat, so then I'm all, like, "look at this cool thing!" and all that. ^^;

Lyn

This might be controversial lol, but of these 3 mid ones, Rockaldo is my favorite. At least it's funny, the other ones are a drag

emerald

"We peridots are tougher than we look!" Fun fact: peridots are 6.5-7 on the Mohs hardness scale, that's on par with most quartzes

morthasa

Ah, yes. The Peridot as Wile E. Coyote episode. Classic ^_^

morthasa

it sucks especially because they had to rush season 5. we could have had some of the season 5 episodes in season 4

needlington

Peridot seems like the type to play “All I do is win” by Dj Khaled in the background during every failed attempt. She just assumes she will get a quick W and wants the style points.

Alex

Ughh i forgot abt Rocknaldo.. 😕

Jx

Uh... Rocknaldo. The faster we move on from that the better.

LikeCat

Hold on it was Pearl AND Garnet, garnet is not completely innocent in that ep

Some Simp

“There must be some common thread between Steven and Amethyst that’s heightened by their fusion.” “I dunno, Sards, I guess, uh, zero plus zero equals zero.” “Something they both think. Something they both do.” “They say two wrongs don’t make a right, I guess I’m living proof that that’s true! I’m just, one big, super wrong, good-for nothing dud with a yo-yo!”

Ríon

Looking through the episodes to see what's coming up and boy... Season 4 has some real ups and downs. You've got Future Boy Zoltron, Onion Gang, and Rocknaldo next to some of the greats like Mindful Education and Last One Out of Beach City.

Alp

Season 4 still has some really good episode mostly in the middle of the season but for most part this season is kinda fillerish

xattygt

this episode feels like the “know your demons” bit in the owl house :)

luviemoo

I love how quickly you picked up the fact that the first episode here is an homage to Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner

Elias Cristerna

It was the diamonds that currupted the gems on earth. I guess they just didn't do it on homeworld

Jack

Wooo! Time to make some food and watch Mosco enjoy one of my favorite shows! 😃 😊
