UNCUT REACTION - Battlestar Galactica S1E5 - You Can't Go Home Again

There were a few call back to the original series here Boxey, the wing waggle, and a complete redefining of the loss of Zach. Loved these two eps you see those elements of OBSG but they are being spun in new directions and we can’t go back to the same parallels anymore. It like these two episodes were a litmus test.

I started noticing how often I talk out loud to myself when I’m alone since watching this episode.

Josh (Target Audience)

Talking to yourself like that is not uncommon, I do this myself all the time focusing on my work, so it's not always a lame way of giving exposition

P S

I like that theme too.. honestly it'd be weird if it wasn't played, but maybe that's because I got so used to it

Chris L

I talk to myself aloud all the time. when a coworker comes in I’ve got to be like 🎶shooby dooby doo.🎶 humming not speaking aloud.

Philbot

My left ear enjoyed this reaction.

Evan Guthrie

It’s the audio recording on our mics. Not sure why it happened.

Josh (Target Audience)

Is anyone else having sound problems with this reaction? I'm only getting the left channel. I've tested on a desktop browser and the Android app.

Ron

Good episode and good characters developing

AzoriusMage

Well, I'm hanging in so far. Good episode. I enjoy having a happy ending for a change.

Collin Freeman

I actually appreciated that little Caprica 6 musical theme when they played it; I don't mind the audio cue that we're going a bit hallucinatory for a minute

BSG has a tendency to be a depressing show, but every once in a while, after a series of tragic events, they throw the audience a bone and give you a feel good episode. This was one such time, albeit you had to wait till the end to get it. On the one hand, of course you want Starbuck rescued, and can sympathize with Lee and Cmdr. Adama in their need to find her. On the other, Tigh for once was the most professional person in the room, and he and Roslin show an objectivity that's hard to argue with. Given their limited resources, the amount of fuel spent and the wear and tear on vipers was a massive strategic mistake. I also never bought that the hole could be sealed by lightly shoving her flight suit into it. If she'd used some kind of patch kit for her suit to seal it, I'd buy it, but honestly the most convincing thing they could have done was having her cut her own suit's air lines and zip tie those to the tubes from the raider. Air in, air out. The raider presumably needs that air as well, this way it's just getting some co2 in there from Starbuck. Still, great episode and great performances all around, but especially from EJO. Telling Lee they'd never leave if it were him always gets me. One more step in their reconciliation.

Views are obviously important, but there are other factors as well. Subscriber and Patron growth, engagement here on Patreon, average watch duration on YouTube. We also wouldn’t expect every episode of this show to already match the Star Trek videos we have been doing for 2 years. It’s early, but they’ve done pretty well.

Do yourselves a favor and leave the 78 show behind.

Regarding Baltar, to add on to my last comment, it is best to think of him as a new character and not really compare him to the original show's Baltar. His character is really great but it is completely different than the more standard evil villain of the original Baltar. Colicos was amazing as the original Baltar of course, when I say "standard" it is more regarding the way the character was conceived of rather than how it was performed, and it could have been much worse with a lesser actor. But the original show had that clear good guys vs bad guys separation that was common back in the day. Star Wars with the good rebels vs the evil empire, etc. BSG on the other hand is all about the shades of grey, where the good guys are not without flaws and make mistakes sometimes, and the bad guys are not entirely evil but have reasons behind their actions. This is again another connection with Game of Thrones - flawed heroes vs villains who are not necessarily moustache-twirling evil Saturday Matinee ones, as the old clear good vs. evil juxtaposition from older movies and TV was seen as really out of date by the mid 2000's. So a character exactly like the original Baltar would have felt out of place with what this show was trying to do.

As I said before, this two parter was one that really made me realize I loved the show and I was hooked on it. That moment where Starbuck was recognized was just such an uplifting moment, the show is really great at giving us those after a bunch of downers and it is very cathartic. Since you guys are watching GoT now too, there is a lot of overlap between the Game of Thrones fanbase and the BSG fanbase, I think for a bunch of different reasons. George RR Martin the author of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels (one of which was "Game of Thrones") was a BSG fan who watched every week. He sometimes blogged about the show on his blog. Glad you guys are enjoying it and I hope you continue past Season 1 as the entire show is great. I've been keeping an eye on the view count on YouTube and the episodes are not doing quite as well as the TNG ones. I'm not sure what view counts are enough for you to continue. I know it was suggested it might have something to do with what weekday it is released on, with people more likely to be busy on Sunday and unavailable to react during the prime period, which could in turn impact how the algorithm promotes it.

Loved your reaction to the inside of the Cylon ship

DustmanNorochj

The moment between Adama and Lee where he says, "If it were you, we'd never leave" just _kills_ me every time. That momentary crack in Adama's mask where he lets just the hint of his feelings show through—man. That's powerful stuff.

Really? I could have sworn there was a break. Yeah, just checked the Wiki, and there was no break. Thanks for the correction. It was season 2 where the break happened.

wildhunt1973

That’s fair.. it’s not a big deal

Josh (Target Audience)

There was no break in season 1, the entire season aired straight through from mid January to April 1st 2005.

Phillip Grischa

At the time, there was still the thinking that people might start watching any given episode (there was no legal way of going back and watching the earlier ones unless you had recorded them yourself) and so I think they want to give that clue for new viewers more than anything, who might not be caught up story-wise and might wonder why where are no other people around on the planet. Using the filter allowed them to suggest that it had been nuked through visual cues. The filters for the most part weren't for the people who saw the previous episodes.

Michael Ducharme

I believe this might have been the first episode after a three month break back in 2005, so this might have been a January 2006 episode, if I'm remembering correctly. Usually they did two-parters at the mid-season, so if you see a "To Be Continued" think of that as being the mid-season in most cases.

wildhunt1973

I think the transitional title card saying they were on Caprica is enough. The first couple episodes there were no filters and we weren’t confused or anything

Josh (Target Audience)

This one got me much more engaged with the characters of Adama, Lee, and Kara, so I felt much more involved with their stories moving forward. As for Baltar, his character was used as "comic relief" for a while, but becomes much more complicated as the series progresses. But one of my main gripes with the show was that annoying Caprica 6 score that they played EVERY SINGLE TIME she showed up. We get it, okay??? Just let the actors act, instead of using music to tell us what we should feel. As for your complaints about the filtered environments on Caprica and the Mars-like moon, I understand what you're saying, but I'm not sure what else they could have done to show that these were very different atmospheres. At the time, those were effective ways to film those situations, but as you say, it's obviously dated. So would you prefer a CGI background instead?

Jeff

Nice little throw back to the OG. Waggling. OG last ep when Apollo and Starbuck return to BG after attacking the Base star in the Cylon ship. I like it, small little reference.
