Not really. Q learns some humility in this episode, but Guinan just kind of acts like a jerk.

James H

Meh episode for me. Good premise but light on substance. Q walks around the ship, yelling “I am human, believe me!” for far too long. Best part was the ending. Mariachi music and Data’s sweet gift.

Shanelle

There's no way you guys don't enjoy this episode. "Fun" fact: The second Q (listed as Q2 in the script) is played by Corbin Bernsen who was starring on the #1 drama at the time, LA Law. For perspective, it would have been like getting a George Clooney cameo at the height of ER.

Jeffrey P

TNG is known for not being the best at comedy, and this strictly speaking isn't a comedy but its comedic moments are all true to character ( a must for me in comedy and also absolutely funny. My opinion of course. The one downside on comedy probably more then most genre's is comedy is very subjective.

Mark Wood

Worf steals the episode with barley anything. The smirk with the ladies on the bridge. And "die!"

Miah1138

I totally prefer Q

Miah1138

And at the time of this episode Bernsen was co-starring on LA Law with Diana Muldaur. I wonder if they swapped TNG stories..

Glenn Johnson Barnes

Outstanding episode as we learn more and more about Q. Love to be the fly on the wall for what went down between Q and Guinan. Interesting how he can't seem to send her away or manipulate her huh? Funny and highly entertaining!

Dale Gonyea

I don’t know. I think I liked Q better than Q.

tyranusfan

Did anyone else notice that Guinan has her own entrance music as she walks into Ten Forward! I never noticed this until a recent re-watch. She even has her own strike music, some sinister bassoons that play in just before she stabs Q with the fork.

Leyton Jay

Around the same year as season 3, I got the Star Trek TNG Technical Manual and just drank it up. For most of the Berman production Era, they are surprisingly consistent with it all. The authors, Steinbach and Okuda, were the tech advisors on the show and both guys were pretty up on current IRL tech so their scifi stuff always felt pretty grounded.

Alexander McKechnie

100% you will love this. I can see your reaction to the pre-title appearance now. 'Red alert!' WHHHHOOOOOAAAA! Is he naked???

Andy Frankham-Allen

Deja Q has always been one of my favorite episodes of TNG

James Bottas

"This is getting out of hand, now there are Q of them!"

Nolan

Am I weird for prefering "sub-routines" over the more modern works folding in the term algorithms? Sub-routines just SOUNDS more sci-fi.

Nolan

Some of TNG's "technobabble" is actually rooted in real theory and technology. As a software engineer, I can halfway understand some of the jargon as it is occasionally rooted in legit computer science.

Lovok

Guinan's approach was quick, thorough, and decisive. I like it.

Jovet

Q-Tease

Jovet

Bernson LOOKED very 90s. (Not in a good way)

Jovet

Me too.

Jovet

I agree with that. Q's reactions to events as a whole throughout the series are so excellent though, so I give him a pass on this one lol

Hunter Sherwood

Loved the "Guinan humanity check", and one of Worf's best lines in the whole series is a single three letter word. John de Lancie showed here how he really had mastered the Q character.

NivekTheIncorrigible

True. I just love that Q always has a barb for Worf whenever he shows up

Manny Fleurmond

I don't believe "hate" is the right word. "Detest" may be a better word. If Q really hated Worf, he could blip him right out of existence in an instant and then blip everyone else into forgetting he ever existed.

Jovet

@bab Luckily "Δ𝒱" and "G" (the gravitational constant) are both sound scientific concepts long before this was written.

Jovet

The episode should have been named Q-BUTT!!!!!

Vagon Khan

I like this episode a lot. But I think Q's reaction to becoming human/mortal should have been a lot different. Troi pointed out that he's feeling terrified, but I would have expected him to remark way more on the change of his existence... what it's like to blink or smell, etc.

Jovet

THOSE AREN'T HIS COLORS!

Jovet

So who do you like better? Q or Q?

BN13

It's a shame Geordi couldn't let it last longer...

Jovet

The looks on the faces of the mariachi band players are priceless!

Jovet

yep that is the best!!

Jovet

Did it make you love Guinan too?

Jovet

"Die!" is one of my most favorite lines in all of TNG, maybe Star Trek!

Jovet

Guinan pulling up just to give Q grief is my favorite part of the episode. That and the continuing barbs thrown between Q and Worf. They really hate each other. Also, that parting gift was really something

Manny Fleurmond

A fun episode. I like that they're establishing technobabble stuff that will be consistent going forward, like subspace bubbles causing inertial mass to reduce. Might not come up a lot, but it does appeal to Trek Tech nerds like me.

Alexander McKechnie

Q's respect for Picard is growing every appearance.

Vikingdad

Yeah another strong Q entry

Scarpad’s Domain

I think you'll like this one. It's got a lot of fun moments, some great snappy dialog, and they really play the technobabble card to great effect. Corbin Bernsen, from LA Law, plays another Q, which only serves to further confuse the Q and their continuum and what they are truly all about. But you'll like this one.

Jack Shipley

Data saved Q's life! I wonder if it comes handy one day..

Jiri Luza

Yeah, it was still pretty science-y then. Braga and Menosky took it over the top with the tech word salad later on.

JGoss

I always enjoy this episode, not just because Q is hilarious, but also because he actually demonstrates some growth at the end by using his powers to save people. Also, shout-out to the Calamarain who are such a cool alien concept and design, no makeup required!

Ryan Caulfield

While i usually find the plot point of "powerful being loses powers" to be slightly annoying, (spiderman 2, thor) i absolutely love it here. A comedic episode of tng was unexpected but a nice change of pace.

Eric Kelly

Oh shit it’s Q … wait now there are two.

Lt Dan I scream

And the thing is this is the rare episode where it's borderline comprehensible - talking about delta v and the gravitational constant instead of complete gobbledeegook.

bab

Good Q, I'll have to think about that.

Nolan

Q's butt cheek appears before Q's credit. Just as it should be. 😂

JGoss

This is the first mention of "tachyons" in Star Trek. Begun the Treknobabble has.

JGoss

So many fun moments in this episode. I will love hearing your pop at seeing the bare Q "Red alert"

Mike Rogers

LOL I see what you did there.

Mike Rogers

TOS callback alert! “Berthold rays” were mentioned way back in This Side of Paradise, as the reason humans couldn’t survive on the planet with the spore flowers.

tyranusfan

He's back! 🎉🎺🎉 Probably the best Q for comedy episode (although, as others have said, not the best episode featuring Q). The writing and chemistry throughout the episode is just wonderful. Since you probably won't be familiar with him, the other gentleman is Corbin Bernson. At the time he was starring on the very popular courtroom drama, LA Law. More contemporary viewers might remember him as Shawn's dad on Psych.

Avaria

"Die." Only Worf could turn a single word of only three letters into such an iconic quote! "Eat any good books lately?" also has to be one of my favourite Q lines.

Elizabeth N

This time you will not be spoiled by credits and title. This is the naked truth.

Sam Langanke

Guinan and the fork is quite possibly my favourite TNG moment. Worf's curt "Die." deserves an honorable mention though. This is probably my favourite episode about Q (but not my top ranked episode with Q in it), and it's nice that we get a bit of Continuum lore when Q shows up to have a chat with Q. I think Q is my favourite of the two - which one is yours?

Gruzz

I love a good Q episode. What are y'all's opinion of Q as a recurring force in the show? You would think his endless power would get old, but I think the writers do a great job with him.

Hunter Sherwood

The first in a great stretch of episodes. Four of the next five episodes are top notch.

Spencer Loften

Oh yes, you will love this one. Some great writing, and John DeLanci is at his best. My favorite scene is in Ten Forward with Guinan. Lives up to the 3rd season hype. Superb.

Michael Metrick

It's a Q episode with interesting alien makeup and a bunch of character scenes between Q and Data about the nature of human existence. Guinan and Crusher even get in or the action. Bold prediction I know - I think you'll like this one.

EnigmaticPenguin

I feel like I have seen this guy before...

Eric Singer

This is a good one.

Just another Red Shirt

What kind of Q would you be? If I were a Q. I would do good, but god- I’d be so bad 😎😇

Badger

And one of the greatest five minutes.

wildhunt1973

One of my favorite Q episodes, especially what Guinan does to him. Hilarious! But it is the first time we see Q in a different and better light. Though he has one of my favorite lines: "Your bedside manner is admirable, Doctor - I'm sure your patients recover quickly...just to get away from you." Don't get me wrong, I love Beverly to death, but that was such a great line.

wildhunt1973

In my humble opinion only the Defector is a better episode in season 3 (up until this point). However there are a few upcoming that are. IMO better than this one.

Greg Quinn

I mean what more a can I say? Data, Q, and Guinan all in the same scene, it doesn’t get much better. A top notch episode, one I imagine you’ll both enjoy! 🖖

TrekNerd85

A lot of fun, an episode that inspired a novel that brought Lwaxana Troi into the mix as well “Q-in-Law” by Peter David. The story is set after this episode but before the end of season 3. The audio book is read by John DeLancie and Majel Barrett and is a blast.

Paul Rymer

The final scene with the Mariachi band and Data’s laugh may be the funniest five minutes in trek history.

Jon1701

Love this episode. Data & Q screen time together, Q learning to put others before his own self, and a reference to Riker pre-beard? Chef's kiss 👌

Brooke Hill

"I don't need your fantasy women." "You weren't like that before the beard!" .... Methinks Q was peeking in on Minuet

JGoss

Q references that Crusher was gone last season and snarks about her return, I'm sure you guys will appreciate the nod.

JGoss

The Picard one happens in this one. There are two double ones. One is Picard and Riker and the one that you mentioned is Picard using two hands. I try to avoid using ep names since the guys read every comment, even replies for these.

THE LORE!!!

Q in the nude, and Picard with a Cuban.

Chris S.

I know the episode "The offspring" has the double face palm meme. Is that what you are thinking about? I forgot if this episode has the Picard face palm too.

James Hoffmann

“Very clever, Worf. Eat any good books lately?” is probably my favorite quote Q says to Worf, just ahead of “And microbrain! Growl for me, let me know you still care!”

Evan Guthrie

Mariachi band. That is all I will say. One of my favorite scenes in all of TNG.

James Hoffmann

This is the episode that really reveals Q actually does have a heart in all those piles of mischief. But are you sure you are going to react to this? I mean Monday is National Chocolate Macaroon Day, and World Bicycle Day.. I figured you'd be skipping this week....

Sequiro

Hello Capi-Tan! Heeeeee's Back! Also at the end in background you can see Worf hang his head in defeat as Q summons the mariachi band "no no no we almost got rid of him"

Justin DiBari

Not a Q fan but this is one of the two episodes (along with Q Who) that actually makes good use of the character.

Nick Sauer

The second episode that goes to cement Q as the best Star Trek recurring character

Matthew Riley

Of course most famously, John Delancie did the opening scene in the buff. Roddenberry rightfully gets blamed for negatively interfering in stories, but in this case he improved it, as the original story had Q faking being “human”, and Gene said if you’re gonna do a story about Q losing his powers, then actually DO IT!

Glenn Johnson Barnes

Worf has the best line of all time in this one. Q: What must I do to covince you? Worf: Die! Also Troi's chocolate sundae is mentioned again. Season 3 has a lot of small continuity moments like that. What others have you noticed?

BN13

Q the laughter on this one. And I think TNG picked the perfect time to humble Q, at least a little. A smidge. Plus, his whole schtick could'nt work forever, so this is a good twist on the formula.

Nolan

Birth of the Picard facepalm meme!

THE LORE!!!

This episode made me love Q. Hope it did the same for you.

James H

There's a scene at the end where the cast is trying so hard not to laugh you can actually see them turning their heads and smiling. John de Lancie at his best.

Trouty McTroutTrout

I predict that you will love this episode. Great character scenes, and a recurring guest star who embraces his role. The gift that Q gives to Data at the end is *chef’s kiss*

Jeffrey

One of my favorite episodes with a ton of great quotes. And of course, the origin of the famous Picard facepalm meme!

JGoss

“Eat any good books lately?” is my favourite inconsequential line in Star Trek.

John M.

This is a great episode, you guys!
