Since Picard has an artificial heart made of tech, not organic tissue, would the arrow have actually pierced it?

The Picard: He Gets Us

They are not Vulcans; this isn’t Vulcan. Also, Vulcan’s were once savage, illogical and dare I say “Stupid”. If this is a society that parallels Vulcan evolution then I would say there are probably ahead of them in a similar point in Vulcan’s history.

Basically, bring a laptop with a fully charged battery and a saved copy of this episode back 1,000 years in our own planet's history.........to teach the moral to our far ancestors. I don't think they'd reach the intended conclusions.

This episode is similar to Picard's statement in 'The Survivors' about humanity having no legal or moral concepts for the act of eliminating an entire race. The Mintakans have no framework to interpret an advanced technological species. It is an impossibility to correctly communicate 24th Century Starfleet humanity to a society that has not yet discovered the foundations themselves. The episode goes for a generalised moral about ignorance & superstition (fine in principle), but the audience watching lived in the late 20th Century. The Mintakans needed to be more advanced by the time this story takes place.

I think the whole point of Prime Directive episodes is, "how do we fix it when we screw everything up?"

All the atheists I've worked with in the last 15 years deny human civilisation is either a driving force, or a major contributing factor in global warming/climate change. Instead they believed whatever most most convenient for their existing beliefs (i.e. keep the lifestyle they were used to, or avoid having to re-evaluate their thinking). Religion or atheism isn't the issue. It's insight into our psychogy and emotional systems that matters.

It never occurred to them to ask what The Picard would need with a starship.

I can handle Evil Vulcans like Romulans, I just can't stand Stupid Vulcans.

With them being primitive people or proto Vulcans how could they not think that Picard was a God. Well done episode.

As an atheist, I always felt that Star Trek and this episode in particular represented me. I resisted the idea that there'd be human religion in the future. However in recent times, when religion has been depicted in Star Trek, I have seen many ignorant and bigoted comments from people who claim to be Star Trek fans and it's changed my mind. I'd swap these awful bigots for religious Star Trek fans any day. I now believe everyone has a right to see themselves in a hopeful vision of the future. Star Trek is for everyone.

So pleased you're tearing into S3, this episode is probably where I'd start someone off on a crash course of what Star Trek is about. A truly great villain-less TNG episode.

Another favorite of mine from this season. Always fun when the Prime Directive has to be thrown out the window to get things done. Your discussion should be very interesting. Keep up the awesome work my dudes. 🖖
