And it's where they met.

Oh Jesus this one. Blech!

Rich Cirivilleri

Sure I guess...from a overarching narrative and meta narrative standpoint that works. But in universe it still doesn't explain Riker blasting her from his perspectives.

Greg Quinn

I enjoy this episode, not great by any means, but an enjoyable watch. Here's a bit of trivia; one of the gatherers is played by Marina Sirtis' husband.

Dan Krantz

Good. But not great. Almost as bad as the 1st episode this season. Correlation? Wesley Crusher! He's in this less so it's less bad? I do think TNG has good Wesley eps. This isn't one

Yuta considered herself already dead, existing only to serve that one purpose, unable to feel anything else. Having her character fail her task and continue to live would be a fate worse than death.

JGoss

Yes, in The Child (Wesley and Guinan watching) and The Schizoid Man (guest star chick watching)

JGoss

That one dude "LAAAAAAAAAAND?! HAHAHAHAHA DO WE LOOK LIKE FARMERS TO YOU?" was pretty cringy. More takes needed!

JGoss

She existed solely to kill the last of that clan, and considered herself already dead. Had she lived knowing she could never exact her final revenge, that's perhaps a fate worse than death.

JGoss

If you guys are wondering why the ending looks so awkward with Picard just sitting there motionless while Yuta gets vaporized, that was a limitation of the optical effects. The director thought it would look cool if Picard was in the shot while she died, however the compositing work of the time required him to be completely motionless as he became the 'background plate'. Stewart didn't think it made sense at the time, and the director admitted later it wasn't the best idea.

My least favorite episode of Season 3. This is the only one I personally would skip on a re-watch of Season 3, but I'll be interested to see Josh's and Alex's comments as I'm sure they will have some redeeming points to this episode.

Haven SMM

Easily my least favourite episode of season 3. Some really poor guest performances in this one as well. Not a lot of positives here so I’ll be interested to see if you guys find any.

Lock up your Commander Rikers, ladies, another hot alien is coming aboard the Enterprise! We already know Geordi is hard up, come on writers! There are other eligible bachelors on the Enterprise! Also, WTF Will! Set phasers to stun! STUN! He straight up disintegrates Yuta. All that dude had to do was get up from his chair and go around to the other side of the table while she was stunned. Call Rich Eisen, we're gonna need an Overreaction Monday report on that ending!

Jack Shipley

Riker killed Yuta for no reason, by the time he set the phaser to kill she could barely walk, he could have simply restrained her. A very WTF ending.

Phillip Grischa

This is an episode along with another that comes up soon I can’t recall watching. Was it banned in the UK as well as the other one?

Paul Rymer

I don't believe so.

Jovet

This episode is very season one with costuming. Also, it seems like a good tackle would’ve worked in the end.

Just another Red Shirt

When I saw the word "Factor" in the title that was an immediate red flag for me. As Alan pointed out, it takes the basic element of That Which Survives from TOS and wraps it with a marginally better story.

Nick Sauer

I forgot this was a season 3 episode... now I remember why.

Andrew Bassey

The romance of the week episodes tend to be the weakest imo. As for the ending, yes they had many SHORT TERM solutions for solving that, but I think the point was to show that Yuta would have NEVER given up her mission otherwise. Even if it took her another 100 years, she'd find some way to carry out the vengeance. The cycle had to stop. She had the choice to stop it herself. But when the hate is so strong that people refuse to make that choice, the cycle only stops with death.

BN13

Not a fan of this one. To me this and "The Price" are the weakest back to back pair of episodes in an otherwise great season.

Spencer Loften

It's not bad, but it's pretty forgettable compared to the rest of the season. I have it right at #5 as the bottom 5 of the season. Also the crew seems pretty "holier than thou" at times here. The Wesley scene in particular had me rooting for the barbarians.

BN13

That was the unfortunate reality at that time. Action, suspense and stakes were male character elements. If an actress had a story built around them then it was 'relationship vs career'. The writers seemed to think raising the stakes might be jarring. Sirtis deserved better throughout TNG. She's not only a very elegant beauty, but a very solid actress.

Surprised the negative posts on this one. It's one of my faves; watched it so many times when I was younger. 'Pathos, ala Yuta!' Not sure why, but Frakes delivery of that line is great, as his chemistry with the actress playing Yuta. The ending is particularly rough for Riker, having little choice but to kill a girl he's grown to love. It's a great little story, with some superb performances. Varool is fab, and his scene with Wes is so much fun, the sarcasm he displays at Wes' disdain for him. Pure joy this one.

If I had to choose between romances of the week between this an the last episode, I'd choose this. It's got a mystery behind it, some peril, and some personal stakes for all involved rather than the last one trying to wring drama out of a wormhole and and a slimy asshole. If Troi had to vaporize Ral, I'd probably have cheered. Riker shooting Yuta leaves one feeling sad and pitying the poor woman. i wonder what would've happened had Riker and Troi switched episodes?

Nolan

Okay episode with some goofy plot holes. Why did Riker have to kill her exactly? Couldn't they transport her to the brig...or if not transport her target away? And Picard just sitting there looking dumb? Now the reason he is motionless is so the special effect of her getting blasted can be done. But it doesn't make sense for Picard and what we know of him in universe. Overall this is a bottom 5 episode for season 3 for me. But bottom five of season 3 is still okay.

Greg Quinn

The most memorable parts of this episode to me are the casting, with Miss Ballbricker from Porky’s (!) as the Sovereign, and scream queen Lisa Wilcox as Ryker’ love interest. Still a very good episode, but I get it confused with 2 other season 3 eps.

Glenn Johnson Barnes

It’s neat to see what entering warp looks like from within the ship. Have we seen that before?

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Basically a retelling of That Which Survives from TOS. A pretty girl that can only kill by touching a certain person which anyone else could stop by just grabbing them. But KIrk and Riker eventually just phaser them instead, roll credits.

Alan Thompson

Kind of a meh episode for me. It's only memorable because several of the great stars happen to look kinda like relatives of mine so it sticks out to me, solely for that reason.

Alexander McKechnie

One of the weaker S3 episodes, still decent I think though.

Elway Simpson

After your response to Up the Ladder I wonder how you'll receive this. I personally like this episode quite a bit. The personalities are interesting and it's not too sci-fi heavy to take away from the story. Interesting Riker insights.

Trouty McTroutTrout

I know! I can buy faster-than-light travel and matter energy transportation, but extrapolating an entire face from a tiny sliver, they crossed the line of verisimilitude there.

JGoss

A week episode, didn’t care for it,some of the actors are dressed like an eighties hair band

Mark

This is also the episode that has SUPERENHANCE-Enhance™. It can "see" things that are nearly completely blocked by other things! Ain't technology wonderful. The first real MAGIC we've seen in this series, I believe.

Jovet

Question: If you were one of the passed-out scientists in the beginning after Data forces the door... if you saw Dr. Beverly coming through the doorway with a jagged, pointy, bloody piece of metal... would you freak out??

Jovet

"How very dare you use your penis to procreate!"

Jovet

This one also has a "weird" feel to it, just like "The Price" did. But it's a different kind of weird. The ending really bothers me. I know it was "for drama" that Riker was put into that position and had to obliterate Yuta. I *know* that. But, if we are looking at it realistically, there's so much more that they could have done to avoid that situation. They could have beamed Yuta away. They could have beamed Chorgan away. Some real separation is all that they needed to save his life without killing anyone.

Jovet

LOL @ the idea of Data drinking beer

Jovet

Maybe they gave up on trying to hide it since in the previous episode the love interest was the "villain" as well.

Evan Guthrie

I personally like this episode, but it's kinda like the movie "National Treasure." It's enjoyable, and I personally like it, but I don't think there's anything remarkable about it. And yet another painfully awkward Riker quasi-romance kinda pushes it down a whole letter grade for me. (Whatever the food is "a la Yuta" makes me want to die.)

John

This one is pretty good, but they kind of gloss over the fact that she halted her aging, as if it's not super rare for them.

Evan Guthrie

There's nothing egregiously bad about the episode, but there's nothing that really sticks out about it either in my memory other than a lot of scenes where Picard has to babysit annoying aliens. By season 3 standards it's definitely below average.

bab

Kinda odd that they give away the villain so early in the episode. The story works. It’s just odd.

tyranusfan

To me this is a very forgettable episode

Jason Mitchell

Holier than thou Wesley appears again "YOU have children???" He's got some balls saying that to the Hell's Angels from Space.

JGoss

Worf: It’s stuck Data: Hold my beer
