You called it "anxiety attack: the movie", and I agree. That's why I love it. From the time they get the launch order until the end of the movie the tension never lets up for a second. And the absolutely stacked cast sells every confrontation perfectly.

So, this movie holds a special place for me. Mom has four brothers, three of them are military veterans. Two of them were Navy men, one of them served onboard a submarine. (Rest in peace, Uncle Mike.) When I was much younger he suggested several movies for me to watch. Das Boot. Torpedo Run, Hunt For Red October, and Crimson Tide. He would often tell me "You have to be a particular kind of person to serve on board a submarine." Referring to the psychological pressure that is put on the men who serve in what amounts to a pressurized tube. The sense of needing to escape can have people spiral into mania if they're not disciplined, trained, and psychologically prepared for it. The movie is not "realistic" in the details, but I would argue that it is "authentic" to the experience of being on a submariner. It's goal is to put you on the sub with these characters. To center around a conflict of perspectives, personalities types, and a situation that creates an inherent contradiction.

Whatever "inaccuracies" it may have aside (I wouldn't know) this is a damn exciting movie with some electrifying performances from some of the best of all time. Kirby Silver Surfer FTW

I like that when Homer’s on a sub on The Simpsons he does Hackman’s head rub.

With Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington on board I had such high hopes for this movie when it came out. Instead we got a 2 hour movie trailer where the camera won’t slow down for a second unless it’s to focus on the sweat dripping from Viggo Mortensen’s chin. This movie is made for people who like movies like Armaggedon and the Transformers movies. The plot was straight out of a comic book made in the early 1980s…when no one wanted to buy comic books because they were shit. The score was so ridiculously over the top I couldn’t tell if I was at a cinema or a concert of Vienna choir bassists. Now I know what Hunt For Red October would have been like had Tony Scott been allowed on set. Even a cameo by the amazing Jason Robards couldn’t save this sub movie from flipping over on its back and begging to be put out of its misery. Give me Sean Connery playing a Russian submariner any day.

A good thriller if you ignore all the inaccuracies and implausible plot...My question is how did you like James Gandolfini's performance. Wife and I just finished watching "The Sopranos" for the first time and think Gandolfini is a fantastic actor. His ability to look just supremely evil in a role shines in this movie. Also it seemed to me that Hackman's character was just hell bent on launching a nuke no matter the consequences. When he tried to fire the first missile his attitude when he pulled the trigger was almost orgasmic.

Monty Crawford

Gene Hackman is good in everything. But, this movie is Hollywood's "blockbuster" response to a smaller super-quotable, well-received film from the same specific genre (based on a novel) from about five years prior that was also lead by a veteran actor paired with a young fresh face. I wish I could remember the name of the film, as it's one of my top three favorite movies of all time.......... : )

It's a great thriller with a packed cast and probably my favorite Denzel movie. Anyone who hates on it for being grossly inaccurate is probably a Moebius Silver Surfer fan...

Juan Tutrífor

I know people love the movie but I am not a fan. A dog on a sub because the skipper is so self centered..... please, that alone shows how ridiculous it is

Terrible film. Completely implausible plot. Sets are all wrong. Verbiage is all wrong. Attitudes are all wrong. This film was not supported by the USN and is hated by most submariners for the very reasons I've stated.
