FULL DISCUSSION - Star Trek TNG S2E14 - The Icarus Factor

I think you guys are right with Riker and Worf. Though I wouldn't say they are on the same level of Gordi and Data yet. I would say its a blossoming friendship while also having a lot of mutual respect and understanding.

Sleeper

But the nu stuff has horrible bad characters and almost no science. Its more comedy marvel quips and call backs and musicals and cartoons

Derek Orr

Agreed. Im more of a TMP style trek fan

Derek Orr

It was tried in another spin off....didn't work very well.

Monty Crawford

I don't think you need to worry about taking the piss out of ambojitsu, everybody pretty much agrees that Star Trek martial arts are kind of ridiculous they at least try so I don't call it completely ridiculous

harrypothead42024

Something I've been meaning to mention for a while: strictly speaking, the two of you shouldn't know O'Brien's first name yet, since it hasn't been mentioned on the show. Of course, a complete spoiler quarantine is impossible, but I thought I should point out that viewers in 1989 only knew him as "Transporter Chief O'Brien."

Anthony Bernacchi

Liked this episode better than when I first saw it because I watched it with you guys.

Jonathan Llyr

I love the sci-fi but the characters have to be be strong. BSG reboot without Baltay, Starbuck, 6, or Adama would be nothing. Not really into the new stuff.

AzoriusMage

Riker is like a Ken doll they loved to dress up. Lol

Andrea R

I think this is the first episode they refer to each other as family. I think that's a subtle but important building block.

Andrea R

I've noticed 2 types of Trekkies. Science first/Characters second and Tyr reverse. I think it explains why some love the new stuff and others not so much.

Andrea R

That explains some of the terrible votes

AzoriusMage

It's a bastard baby of Anime and Tron.

Jovet

It may be true for many but it's not the thing for me. The sci-fi is numero-uno for me. Compelling, interesting, believable characters are icing on the cake.

Jovet

Might have to rename it Pon Nyrr!

Jovet

@Glenn Johnson Barnes It's not minor to me. The writing team completely blew it here! It is not necessary to come full out with a "I porked your dad back in the day" ... just a "[I know you're estranged but] I knew your father [in the past]" would have been something. And she had the PRIME opportunity at the eggbreaking the previous episode!

Jovet

Anbo-jytsu is basically a blind version of SpongeBob and Sandy hitting each other with giant ear cleaners.

James H

In terms of tv retcons, or even Trek retcons, this one is pretty minor. Getting to know a younger coworker, I myself would probably be reluctant to volunteer that I banged their parent 😃

Glenn Johnson Barnes

I think Alex is right about the Worf and Ryker relationship, and in that scene, that was the main reason Worf wanted to leave and go with Ryker to the Ares. The Rite of Ascension thing was not playing into that reaction so much, in my mind.

Collin Freeman

I actually had memories of William Windom in mind, which is funny considering he was Matt Decker, father of Willard Decker who was the prototype for William Ryker.

Collin Freeman

You can make fun of those suits. You will be joining the chorus. :)

John M.

You are quite right about the Sci-Fi part being incidental to the main appeal the great shows have great characters first otherwise they don't work. BSG Remake, TNG, The Expanse etc are great because of the people you care about the rest is a bonus.

AzoriusMage

No.

Jovet

If she would have just SAID that in character then I could accept the whole silly retcon a lot better. A whole "I didn't know how much you [Will] knew about us, and did not want to make you uncomfortable" would have been fabulous continuity.

Jovet

Good episode. Bringing in a parent character is kind of the ultimate ticket to backstory. I particularly liked the scene between Riker and Troi. Glad you guys enjoyed this one too. Alex's note on Riker tying staying on the Enterprise to finishing what he started and throwing that back at his dad for not doing the same, is bang on

James Bottas

I thought the same thing about Admiral Quinn (Ward Costello) in "Coming of Age" and "Conspiracy."

Anthony Bernacchi

Might just be me, but does anyone else think they cast Kyle Riker to kind of resemble Gene Roddenberry (which, if so, has some interesting subtextual implications)?

Avaria

She definitely thought she’d never have to deal with it because because Kyle would never show up on the Enterprise

Josh (Target Audience)

This is one episode I do not care about at all, completely forgettable.

Phillip Grischa

Also, yes, Riker and Worf are very much close friends. It's been built since 'Where Silence Has Lease', and continued through 'Matter of Honour' and this present episode. More subtle than Data and Geordi, but still definitely there.

Andy Frankham-Allen

I always saw it as Pulaski was a little awkward about it (just like she was about her adoration for Picard), especially as Riker is first officer. So, her 'it just never came up' was her rubbish way of saying 'there was no way I was going to bring up that I was almost the step-mother of the first officer'.

Andy Frankham-Allen

Imagine if Spock had the Holodeck for Pon Farr!

Stephen Wright

0:51 Yes they did. Cringe, for me! "It just never came up" ...
