POLL - Which version of The Abyss for the reaction

The Abyss (1989) won the poll and we will be watching it for Audience Cut. There are two versions of this movie. The theatrical version (145 mins) and the special edition (171 mins).

Vote for which version we should watch for the reaction. Keep in mind you will need your own copy to sync and watch with us.

After some research, it looks like a new 4K version of the film that includes both versions is releasing on March 12th, so we will wait to buy that and the reaction should come in mid to late March.

This is one where I really preferred the theatrical.

"The special edition came first, it was then edited down to the theatrical release. Just because you weren't able to see the special edition first doesn't mean it didn't come first." This is factually wrong, the theatrical version came first, there's no discussion here. That the scenes included in the special edition were included in a rough cut before release (without finished FX) is irrelevant, every movie includes additional scenes before release and is cut down during editing, that's literally how editing and assembling a movie works.

Theatrical, it's the actual released movie that countless people enjoyed. While I have no problem with special editions, director's cuts, extended cuts or whatever you want to call them at the end of the day they only exist because the theatrical version was a success that countless people loved, so they should only exist as an additional feature watched later.

The special edition came first, it was then edited down to the theatrical release. Just because you weren't able to see the special edition first doesn't mean it didn't come first. That would be like not watching the cage until after you've watched all of the original series movies 1 through 4 and the cage is your pre Premiere to encounter at four point? That's how the rest of us got to see it.

I'll be honest the theatrical release is almost unwatchable. The resolution is obviously hacked together and it doesn't ever congeal into a real story. Avatar may not be my type of thing but, people need to realize, just trust James cameron.

One day... we'll get to see Akira!

Michael Mannisto

Changed my vote to Theatrical. There's some stuff I love love love in the Special Edition, characters & situations expanded on, but, like Aliens & T2, the original is the one I grew up with and actually prefer.

I voted for the theatrical release. The special edition is cool, but start with the original release and move on to the special edition later. It’s the completionist in me that suggests this. go in order Like Star Trek it is just the best way to go forward Either way I think your in for a good ride

For most movies I do tend to prefer a theatrical cut for first time viewers and I do enjoy the theatrical cut of this film, but I also like the Special Edition. I’m fine with either.

The extended addition adds a completely extraneous storyline. There's a reason those scenes were cut. Also, because it's so few scenes, it's rushed and feels like a forced storyline. The movie is far superior without it.

Nerd's Gold

Sure but we vote for movies that are mid and yet you choose cracking ones.

Akira lives to see another poll as it beat out Airplane 2 by 1% for the last survivor spot

Josh (Target Audience)

Special Edition is the way to go

James Bottas

I knew the theatrical cut backwards and loved it but like the directors cut more.

Paul Rymer

or one single

Double Feature!

I prefer the Special Edition for this as I do for Aliens. Terminator 2 though I prefer the theatrical cut.

JGoss

Easy choice.

Faitestealer

Longer and slower is not always better (hehehehe yeah you know )

Prof Moff

I saw the extended 4k directors cut in theaters recently, and it was great! I would recommend it over the theatrical. I'm pretty sure Cameron would too.

Michael Mannisto

Skip it and watch Akira 🧂
