Ah, okay, I felt like if Picard had been telling me we're all in this together in that tone of voice I would have been a little disconcerted, but I can see how that could be just passionate and emphatic.

I for one can tell you that I'd rather people act NORMAL around me if I'm disabled and don't suddenly feel like they need to walk on egg shells or adjust their behavior just because of me. Picard was emotional and was trying to tell the man that he's not alone. I think his reaction was perfect. Yell or no

Honestly by the 24th century so many causes of deafness would likely be treated that maybe this is the first deaf person Picard ever encountered and this is his normal reaction.

It's a neat effect, looks like an awful way to go.
Alas I have more to say about this, but we'll have to wait for another episode in the future.

That skeleton-death effect was AMAZING when this episode aired in January 1989. I thought you guys would have an even bigger reaction to that, but you had probably seen stuff like that many times before. I had NEVER seen anything like that when this episode aired. Entertainment.ha.com says that, "A Johns Hopkins functional model of the human skeleton (was) used... Painted by visual effects supervisor Dan Curry with a bloody-ash color scheme to resemble residual burnt soft tissue. The skeleton was aligned with each character's position, photographed separately on a blue screen, and composted into the disintegration scene with animation...by hand."

ST:TNG's disability awareness and advocacy really shines with Picard trying to bridge the chasm of communication by yelling at a deaf man. [facepalm]

I "like" how all the visual effects are in the preview.

No idea if anybody has written this already but: The female translator was played by John de Lancie's wife.
There's a funny interview Where DeLancie talks about their kid telling them that daddy was cooler than mom on Star Trek, and when his mom asked why the kid said "Dad didn't die" :D
