PATREON EXCLUSIVE UNCUT REACTION - Total Recall (1990)

One of Arnolds best.

John A

the actor who played Cohagen will be popping up in TNG in season 6.

penoyer79

Awwww hell yeah! I'm here for cinema masterpieces like this! Eager to see the Robocop and Starship Troopers reactions when/if they happen.

Gryff

Try watching 'Junior'. Very funny comedy with Arnold, Danny and Emma Thompson. 'TRUE LIES' with Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton is another great Arnold comedy action film. But I have to say his 'CONAN THE BARBARIAN' films are my favorites because of the saga/legend way they made them.

TeenyStudio Flicks

I saw alot of these movies when I was probably too young for them and it made my childhood!

Watching this movie for the hundredth time I start to notice the films flaws if Lori and Richter weren’t so bad at their jobs everything would have worked out fine. Quaid remembered nothing when discount Devito tried to kill him they should have just continued with the plan. Lori should have played wifey Pooh for longer he would’ve brought her along for the ride. She must’ve been sick of that assignment so she truly loved Richter. 😆 also the whole point of the Hauser/Quaid switcheroo was to slip him in past the physics, but Benny just waltzed right into their rebel base. I was thinking in the final act Richter should’ve helped Quaid escape he lost his wife, his bespectacled pal. Cohaggen treated him like an errand boy the entire time. And then a scape goat. If he’d known the plan he could have adjusted accordingly maybe his wife wouldn’t have been killed. But then again Quaid did cap her..

Philbot

It’s probably streaming at 30fps while our videos are 24fps

Josh (Target Audience)

Cheesy? Sure. Riotous good fun and all action? Hell yeah. It is hard not to enjoy Arnie from this era, so much fun. Great watching you guys enjoy it so much.

AzoriusMage

I love that you guys are watching this at just the perfect time. And that's all I'll say about that.

David Brown

Sharon Stone was in Wes Cravens 1981 horror classic Deadly Blessing , The movie starred Maren Jensen from BSG and And Douglas Barr (from the Fall Guy)

@Mike - same, I watched on VUDU but had to keep pausing the TA stream for a second here and there to line it back up with the movie that kept falling behind.

This has always seemed a strange argument to me. You've never had a dream where you were just observing the action, not a participant, not present in the scene? And the sweat is given as so damning, but if its all in Quaids head, then he could just be imagining the sweat in order to justify killing Roy Brocksmith's character and remain in the delusion.

Julie Carter

People often assert that its all a dream. The problem is, we as the audience hold an objective view point, and what we see shows us people acting and reacting without Quaid around. That's not a dream. In a dream everything is solely focused on the dreamer. If we didn't have the doctor's talking about Quaid's real identity was revealed, or had Cohagen and Richter talking by themselves, then the "It's a dream" side of the story would have a chance at working. Also, the scene where the Rekall guy comes to see him is so clearly trying to bluff the audience, but the pay off is that Quaid realizes the dude is bluffing and shoots him. The dream thing is more of a tone element of the movie. "What if your dream became reality?"

Steven Johnson

No way!

Steven Johnson

It's streamable on Crave in Canada, in case that helps anyone

10/10 Movie 8/10 Reaction (minus 2pts for no Fireball) Awesome rewatch. Always a favorite. I love the details that make you question whether it was all the Recall dream or not. Melina's face in the screen at Recall and "blue skies on Mars" the Recall tech mentions being the standout moments that makes you go Hmmmm.

StonyD

Thanks, Mike. I am not sure I have Vudu. I may pay for it on Prime. I’ll look into it.

Collin Freeman

I watched it off VUDU, but there must of been slight differences in speed because the boys commentary would drift a second or so forward from the movie.

Mike Rogers

The original cut was slapped with an X rating for the violence. So the gore was actually cut down from what you saw here. The human shield scene and Benny's death was heavily trimmed as well as the scene of the dwarf prostitute running one of the henchmen through.

Mike Rogers

I'm sorry, but I don't understand how everyone here doesn't already own this movie on DVD or something. I still have my VHS of it.

Edweirdo

YES, best movie ever :)

Andreas Schmitt

Thanks for that comment. I've gone back and forth on this issue. Nice to know I'm not really supposed to come to a definite conclusion, because it's too much of a head-wrecker to explain away the contradictions.

Numinous2019

Many more fun memes and lines had they picked Uranus instead of Mars.. "Get your ass to Uranus!"

Badger

According to Verhoven in interviews, he intentionally made the movie with the idea that what we are watching is both real AND a dream. To make it as vague as possible by not having "true" interpretation. As such there are lots of things that suggest it is a dream, but also things that make more sense if it's really happening.

Julie Carter

As much as I also like this movie, it really could have done without a lot of the blood and gore.

Monty Crawford

Yeah, and she wore out the casting couch.

Monty Crawford

It's on AMC+ in the US right now

Julie Carter

Looks like it must’ve just come off Paramount+ unfortunately

Josh (Target Audience)

Sorry guys, it didn't show up for me on Paramount+, unless it's only available for people who pay for the upper tier. Good movie, though. I haven't seen it in quite a few years.

Collin Freeman

A lot of people argue about whether its all a dream or not, but I think the movie basically breaks the "What do you think it is?" aspect by showing us scenes that don't involve Quaid. Like, when he's knocked out and the doctors are talking about the fake memories, or cutting away and having Ronny Cox and Michael Ironside talking. That's just been my read of the film since the second time I saw it, that the "Rekall" stuff is a Red Herring. 29:48 I had a buddy who served overseas as a private contractor. I asked him if he had ever been shot before and what did that feel like? "It burns a lot." Two games that took at least some inspiration from Total Recall are "Flashback" from 1992 (which also got a remake in 2013) and Red Faction.

Steven Johnson

It is interesting that Sharon Stone's movie career is sort of an accident. When the 1985 movie King Solomon's Mines was being cast, the producer said that he wanted Kathleen Turner, who was coming off the hit similar action-adventure film Romancing the Stone from the year earlier in 1984. He said, "I want that Stone woman," and Sharon Stone was hired by mistake. Sharon Stone was really something for a few years.

It sounds like you guys actually analyzed the plot. I just remember being blown away by the visuals and the basic story. I probably expected even more back then, but I remember it as being quite a rewatchable movie that can really draw you in. I remember some of visuals being sort of ahead of its time.

Chtphr Rrr

Glad to hear you could replace that TV through Patreon support. Nice to be able to see how this support comes through for you.

Scoring a movie.....Hollywood often gave composers amphetamines to get them through several weeks of intense work. Since the 1990's too many movies allow composers not enough time to do themselves justice. Look up Goldsmith for scoring 'Chinatown' in 10 days and the temporary music fiasco he experienced on 'Alien'.

Numinous2019

I live on Mars. There are no streaming services that have the movie. Ironic if you think about it

Prof Moff

Title of the story this is based on is "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale."

Steven Johnson

Y- you haven't seen Robocop?! Oh, you sweet sheltered child! I saw it when I was eight years old. *twitch* And I turned out perfectly fine.

Steven Johnson

Oh, my aching nose…
