QUESTIONS & TOPICS FOR WHATEVER THIS IS

Comment on this post a question for us to answer, or a topic idea for us to discuss. There are no guidelines or restrictions. Feel free to post a few comments, but please don't spam with too many. Keep in mind Star Trek related stuff is fine, but it is not the focus of this project so other topics are more likely to be used.

The “main topic” for this episode will be movies we consider HIDDEN GEMS. Feel free to comment a movie you consider a hidden gem, and we may bring it up if we have seen it and/or have an opinion on it.

We are recording the episode on Wednesday, so please have your questions/topics commented by then. Here are a few general ideas of what kind of topics we are looking to discuss, but you don't have to stick to this criteria:

- A recently released movie/TV show

- Movie/TV show related topics such as "favorites" or specific actors/directors/genres

- Hollywood/film industry news

- Internet content such as YouTube channels or websites

- Recent content on our YouTube/Patreon channel and ideas for the future

Comments

Based on some of the comments you made and preferences you've stated on some of the recent episodes, I believe you'd really like "the 13th Floor" (1999). Another hidden gem would be "Primer" (2004). Both are science fiction.

valen

I so prefer Baldwin over Ford in that role. For all his later life faults, Baldwin was at least playing the character. Ford was just playing Ford imo

StonyD

Excellent film if you love music. Not sure it would be up their creek, though.

StonyD

The Russos had YEARS directing successful television shows, the activist documentary director does not and will do about as good as the other activist documentary director that gave us ETERNALS.....badly. Finally, I have seen no evidence that Daisy Ridley is, in fact, a "good actress". Her SW follow ups have been wooden and lack finesse. So, Ken R, South Park, and pretty much the entire world since RoS have come to an educated conclusion.

StonyD

Enjoyable YouTube Content for Star Trek Fans: Star Trek Continues, and Axanar(and related content). Continues is a fan fic series of Episodes that is a true love letter/ continuation of the Original Series. Axanar is devisive because it is a very high production value prequel based off of something mentioned in a TOS Episode. It set records for crowd sourced fundraising and used actual prior Trek actors. Got sued by CBS for copyright infringement and led to a hard crack down on size and scope of fan fiction, and possible attempt to profit off of CBS's IP. Haven't looked for awhile to see what is out there, but the preliminary stuff they put out was pretty good

Nathan Cline

Several reactors I've seen have done Hunt For Red October. Often leading into doing its sequels, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. A lot of people forget they are from the same novel series as Alec Baldwin was re-cast in favor of Harrison Ford.

Nathan Cline

I consider Suicide Kings (1997) to be underrated and a hidden gem. One of my favorites with Christopher Walken where he plays a mafia boss who gets kidnapped by a bunch of 20 something year olds in attempt to pay off a ransom. I highly recommend.

TalynStarburst

Wonderful film and highly recommended to anyone even vaguely considering watching it. I did try to read the first O'Brian novel, since the series had been so lavishly praised. I just found the density of the technical naval terminology in the majority of the first 100 pages hard to get through. I'll give that book another try in a few years.

Numinous2019

When she said helming Star Wars she meant directing, not running the studio. Her work is mostly in non fiction but her lack of experience directing feature films does not mean she won't deliver, the Russos only directed two comedies before taking over Captain America and Avengers and directing some of Marvels biggest successes, I mean The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame in a row? Who would have expected that? And while I agree no one asked for this that shouldn't matter, if studios only produced what fans want we would have never gotten Guardians of The Galaxy and on the Star Wars side no one asked for an Andor tv show, meanwhile everyone wanted more Obi Wan and we all know how that turned out. Daisy Ridley is a good actress, it's not her fault the sequel trilogy wasn't great and for all we know this new movie will do for Rey what Ragnarok did for Thor.

Phillip Grischa

I thoroughly recommend reading the Aubrey & Maturin series which consist of 21 sea stories books written by Patrick OBrian if you haven't already done. Really good story writing.

Darren Chapman

I'd call it a hidden gem. Master and Commander is one of my favorite movies.

Mark

Another gem, if you have not already seen it, is First Men In The Moon, 1964.

Monty Crawford

That one IS a good one. The sequel did not impress me.

Monty Crawford

These guys have normal day jobs, I think they are making enough as it is and still have a normal life.

Monty Crawford

Colossus is available for free on Vimeo, Murphy's war is on various sites but not free except for hoopla, but you have to have a library card to access it. I have both on DVD myself.

Monty Crawford

There's a 2007 indie film called "The man from Earth". I consider myself an armchair cimea buff and I've always been boring and Shawshank has always been my favourite film. Up until I discovered this gem, very philosophical film carried solely by dialogue shot in one room. It's beautiful. And here's the kicker. Original screenplay written by Jerome bixby (dude who wrote the trek ep mirror, mirror), also stars trek actor from upcoming series. So yeah, that's my hidden gem, free on YouTube for anyone who reads this by the way ;)

Joseph

A recent kind of hidden gem I can think of is Godzilla Minus One. It was quite successful here for a foreign movie (that has yet to be dubbed into English). It is not yet released to streaming or disc but I am sure that will come soon.

Mike Rogers

Unfortunately, any streaming or broadcast version of TFC very crudely cuts a racial slur (however, if you have a blu ray or DVD, it is still there). The guys will have to make clear whether they are reviewing from disc or streaming.

Mike Rogers

I have the blu ray for this too. However, I don't think it's available on streaming platforms I could be wrong.

Mike Rogers

I'm not sure if this film is necessarily a "hidden gem" but Master and commander the far side of the world. Is a great film about naval warfare staring Russell crow. Quite underrated IMHO.

Darren Chapman

WHATEVER THIS IS: I find it interesting that you are watching Star Trek now. You grew up with the internet, you have seen hundreds movies tv shows with a surprise at the end so it is harder to actually surprise you writing wise. This is a different age then when I grew up pre internet to watch TOS after school hoping for a different episode this week than the same ones over and over-didnt matter I still watched..then Next gen came out and it all seemed so fresh, they were taking risks TOS never dreamed of, new FX etc.. And now occasionally you go back and revisit TOS with a new eye and appreciation, like you will 25 years from now..I always wished I could go backwards in time and experience it new to me all over again - which is what you are doing for us. Ive always dreamed of that Trek future where everyone gets along etc etc.. Assuming we actually survive -how do you envision the future? Not in my life time but- will we ever get there? also Would you gosh darn watch Tombstone already...

Badger

A little bit of an oldie, and it's amazing it's a hidden gem considering it's a Tom Hanks joint, but "That Thing You Do!" is one of my all-time favorites and basically a love letter to early 60s music, one-hit wonders and early garage bands.

JD Nevesytrof

Fair enough. In this day and age, I just cannot tell.

StonyD

One of my favorite movies! It's completely under-rated and I don't know why. Phenomenal cast and soundtrack.

Brian Moore

Is there any way you guys could do some kind of a occasional live show? Maybe a re-watch party? Anything. We want more Target Audience!

Crush

Is there a genre, actor or director you wished you had more experience with?

Jonathan

Not really hidden, but I don't see much discussion about "Gattaca", even though almost everyone who has seen it loves it. Feels very Star Trek in that it is exploring a single scifi idea in a very simple story structure, not flashy but character focused, and with a message and ideas that are relevant to our life today.

TivAcrid

The first sci-fi film I enjoyed was called '' IT!! The Terror from Beyond Space''

Vikingdad

Not really a hidden gem but I really enjoy The French Connection, which is so atmospheric and the geography of NYC is grounded in reality. In terms of sci-fi / fantasy I think Time Bandits (1981) is incredible - superb cast, very funny film but at times terrifying.

Paul Rymer

The best Billy Wilder comedy in my opinion is "One Two Three". It is a satire and together with "Dr. Strangelove" the ultimate filmed comment about the cold war, focussing on the economic, social and political aspects of capitalism and communism. It was literally a hidden gem, because its was filmed in (East- and West-)Berlin in 1961 - just months before the Wall was built! Nobody wanted to lough about that afterwards, which is understandable. So it quickly was taken out of the cinemas. But it is truly great! Not only makes the movie fun of Russians, Germans and Americans alike. It spins around the biggest symbol for American Capitalism ever: Coca Cola! With its real name, logo and everything. James Cagney as main character even plays the top manager of Coke in West-Berlin!

Sam Langanke

I wouldn't consider Hunt a "hidden" gem, I feel like lots of people appreciate it. Maybe I'm wrong though, either way it's a fantastic movie.

Evan Guthrie

A couple sequels that I consider to be hidden gems are Alien 3 and 2010 (sequel to 2001). Alien 3 is a great return to form in a unique setting, unfortunately people don't like how it follows up Aliens. 2010 doesn't try to be 2001, it tries to go a little less avant-garde and more accessible to audiences, and people dislike how it tries to explain 2001 but it feels like a worthy sequel that doesn't try to be 2001 again.

Evan Guthrie

A couple of "hidden gems" you might want to consider is "Colossus: The Forbin Project" which I sent you and should be in your mailbox. Another gem which is one of my favorite movies is the 1971 release "Murphy's War" starring Peter O'toole and directed by Peter Yates.

Monty Crawford

Since no one on Earth was asking for a new Rey movie made by some sort of director who never directed a movie before and is in on tape saying its time for a female to helm star wars (somehow Kathleen Kennedy doesn't count I guess), did South Park call the whole Disney thing right with "put a chick in it and make her gay"?

Ken R

I find the film Your Highness very funny. It matches my sense of humor quite well, even if I don't approve of the pun of the title.

Jovet

Have either of you ever seen "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf"? I think you might like it based on your enjoyment of 12 Angry Men. Another hidden gem recommendation: "Chinatown" with Jack Nicholson. That one is probably not so hidden.

Collin Freeman

I prefer older movies, although the newest movie I have seen is "Barbie", which I liked. I don't know how many Hitchcock films either of you have seen, but a kind of a hidden gem Hitchcock is "The Trouble With Harry" (1955), which is one of his rare full comedy films. It stars John Forsythe, perhaps best known to your generation as being in "Scrooged" with Bill Murray and being the voice of Charlie in at least the first two "Charlie's Angels" movies that came out since the early 2000s as well as the 70s TV show that the movies were based on. He also starred with Joan "Edith Keeler" Collins in the 80s TV show "Dynasty". TTWH is the film debut of future Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine. It also costars a pre-"Leave It To Beaver" Jerry Mathers as her son. If you haven't heard of either of them look them up.

KatWithAttitude

QUESTION: What do you prefer in a heroic lead - brawns or brains? Many successful leads have a mix of both. I just didn't know if you had a preference in an 'either/or' situation. (This is NOT a 'Kirk or Picard' question!) MOVIES: THE NICE GUYS: Ryan Gosling / Russel Crowe (2016). One of the best movies to come out in the past 20yrs in my opinion. I have no idea whether this is considered a "hidden gem" or not (as I don't ever hear much about it) but I'm a big Tom Clancy fan, and I love the movie THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. If you haven't seen that, I'd love for you to check it out. I feel certain you would dig it. P.S. Don't let the ankle-biters on YouTube bug you. They are a minority compared to this major fandom you have gained in the past year. We're here for a reason, and that's because we enjoy you both! FIREBALL BROS FOREVER! Crunch time!

StonyD

any YouTube channels you feel inspired by?

Captain Proton

I love this film. Cameron Crowe had cut his teeth writing for Rolling Stone mag. back in the day so he was really able to capture the vibe of the era without veering too much towards idealization or pessimism. Philip Seymour Hoffman was also great as Lester Bangs in it and the score was a great fit as well.

Captain Proton

This past year I saw the film Bottoms and absolutely loved it. It takes everything I ever liked about the "Teen Sex Comedy" genre, cranked it up and made it queer as hell. If you havent heard of it at all, its about two lesbians who start a fight club at their Highschool in order to pick up girls. Definitely worth the watch if any of that seems interesting to you and my favorite under hyped film of the year

Julie Carter

My all-time fave film is Almost Famous (2000), flopped at cinemas, but earned Kate Husdon a Golden Globe, Cameron Crowe a Best Screenplay Oscar, and is widely accepted to have been "Vindicated by History"

Ee'char

Most underrated, yet incredibly fun movie must be "Hardcore Henry". First person POV that actually looks and feels right, stellar cast and awesome, action packed fight scenes. <3

Hroghi

Hidden gems: "Return to Oz" (1985) is the only movie that gets better every time I see it, and I already loved it the first time. I'm afraid that if I see it two or three more times it will turn out to be better than "Citizen Kane"!
