EARLY ACCESS - Star Trek TNG's EXTREMELY ODD Season 2 Premiere

Comments

I like this episode way more than you guys did, but to each his own! I thought it was a great sci fi concept and executed reasonably well.

On first run, I missed all but like 3 episodes of the first season. This is the first season that I saw in full and really got invested in. I think I had even forgotten that Dr. Crusher was the doctor at first - to me Pulaski was *the* Doctor. It is interesting the different impression that I got of the series, skipping over season 1 like that (for the most part) and coming in on season 2. It was different for others because they watched all of season 1 first and got used to Dr. Crusher.

In Patrick Stewart's memoir "Making It So", he said TNG was extremely close to being canceled due to the writer's strike after S1.

I remember waiting through the summer for season 2 to start back when it was broadcast. My father and i were very excited for it, and i would say we didnt hate the start. It was fine, but you have to understand TNG was new and we had no concept as to how much better it would get as the season and the show progressed. So we were quite happy at what we had seen so far. With hindsight, you realize how hokey some of the episodes really were.

Please tell me that we'll be referring to her as Polanski for the entire season.

"I don't see how that makes any sense." "I know!" Now _that's_ how you do an intro with a compelling hook!

Season 2 is my favorite season of TNG, although I admit that it's probably not the measurably "best" season of the show. You guys have gotten me to look at Season 1 differently so maybe I'll look at Season 2 differently before you're done with it.

Darin Wagner

Ya, I just read an article concerning one of the episodes in this season that I can't mention because they have not watched it yet, over one of the writers problems with one of the producers. I'll mention it when they make the uncut video of it.

Monty Crawford

I think at the end of the season you'll feel about it very much like you felt about TOS Season 2: They experimented more, which gave it some of the best episodes of the entire show and also quite a few stinkers, they explored more, put some characters into better position, did more character plots, but ultimately it was more ups and downs than season 1, which at times is great, at times not so great. But I think this exploration gave it the understanding of what works and what doesnt, and with a new show runner coming in season 3, and better writers joining, season 3 is arguably the best of the show. And this season built towards that. It struggled from losing two characters but it got the remaining ones into a great spot, and added a great one with Guinan. Just like with season 2 TOS I think you'll end up judging this one as less consistent in quality, but I'm sure it will have a few episodes that will end up on your top list for the entire show. It certainly has a few episodes some consider to be the best of the entire franchise.

Andreas Schmitt

Definitely. I actually find Pulaski to be the superior doctor-character. I even made a video about it on my channel... which the TA guys can NOT watch because it would reveal too much, sadly.

Darin Wagner

Try to give Pulaski a chance. I know you're mad about Crusher leaving and that she's a bit rough with Data, but she's honestly one of my favorite Star Trek doctors. I think a lot of people give the character a hard time because she replaced Crusher, which neither the actress nor the character are to blame for.

Andreas Schmitt

One is her name. The other is not.

Darin Wagner

What’s the difference?

Josh (Target Audience)

Josh needs to remember there's no "n" in "Pulaski."

As the trailer for the episode reveals, the big selling elements of the season opener were Whoopi Goldberg guest starring along with the myriad of changes indicating the passage of time from the first season and the cast reassignments. It doesn't hit us today as obviously as it did back in the day. People who watched the first season were eager to see what had changed. Also, the writer's strike had caused a bit of delay in new shows in general so fans were just happy that TNG survived.
