Dr. Pulaski gets a bad rap.
Rightfully so, not a great character. Look up “how not to redo Bones” in the writers guide, her picture is there. Nothing against the actress, you have to play the cards you’re dealt, and she did manage to make the character as bad as it was written.

I didn't think this was a bad episode. Turning a child into a source of mild horror was something that fans were used to by this point in the 80s... thanks to movies like Rosemary's Baby and The Omen back in the 70s. Plus you have to factor in Picard's issues with children in general. Certainly the Troi character went through a lot in this episode, but not as much as Uhura did in "The Changeling." It's important for establishing the new status quo for Worf, Geordi and the new CMO.

It would probably have suffered from many of the same problems as early TNG. It wasn't that much later and many of the same people were involved.

From the brief story summaries I've read for the dozen or so Phase II episodes, I think Phase II might have really struggled to re-establish Star Trek. At least for that first planned season. None of those story outlines sound very promising. The TOS crew movies were the far better way to go.

This episode was written for the unproduced 70s Trek show. They did the best they could because of the writer's strike. The life form was to impregnate Ilia.
