2024-02-01 23:32:45 +0000 UTCLove this movie. A great movie with a heaping helping of Arnold one liners. This is one of those movies at the end of the analog effects. Most effects here are analog and practical. Not the least of which is the decompression scenes, which were done with puppets. I am willing to bet Arnold Schwarzenegger holds the record for how many special effects puppets and dummies were made of him, going back to Terminator. Jerry Goldsmith's score levels the movie up even more. This was when he was still being so innovative, like in TMP. In later years, Goldsmith would still make lovely scores but he would recycle a bit too much.

2024-01-27 15:02:30 +0000 UTCDefinitely a different genre heh, but Verhoeven’s “Showgirls” is my all time guilty pleasure.

2024-01-27 07:29:48 +0000 UTCArnold's greatest role will forever be Mr Freeze, I'm sure everyone is in agreement on that, but this is a very good choice.

2024-01-26 21:34:03 +0000 UTCWell, first of all, no one is 'wrong' for not liking a film (either Total Recall or Starship Troopers). My argument about the 1990 T.R. is that it has almost no actual emotional content (unlike Robocop) and it isn't filmed in a way that makes it immersive as to whether what is happening is real or not. Think of David Cronenberg and how he would have approached T.R. for example. Starship Troopers at least is a satire and that is a consistent through line in the film. Verhoeven may have been satirising violence and action films to an extent in T.R., but I always just found it 'blunt' (apart from the technical aspects of the production) and I really dislike the 'Insert Plot Development Here' structure.

2024-01-26 20:57:29 +0000 UTCI used this poster as invitatiton frontpage for my last milestone birthday. Only replacing my face and name instead of Arnold's. And fun nonsense as "credits". He is my fellow Austrian after all, although I didn't like many of his movies. This? Hell yeah!

2024-01-26 19:34:13 +0000 UTCThis is a fun movie, I saw it in a theater when first released....but it's just a little bit to bloody for my tastes. I felt a lot of it was just unnecessary.

2024-01-26 16:49:29 +0000 UTCI'm not a Verhoeven fan at all, honestly. But the 1980's love of action heroes and the TR remake in the 2000's that flopped would disagree with you. I think Starship Troopers is a bigger "pointless graphic violence" film in that vein and not nearly as entertaining.

2024-01-26 16:39:34 +0000 UTCBig Jerry Goldsmith fan, but I do not like this Verhoeven film. It isn't as well written as it needs to be. Far too much pointless graphic violence and raw chunks of plot scenes thrown on top of the gratuitous splatter every 15 or 20 minutes. This story would have worked better with a non-action movie star as Quaid.

2024-01-26 15:41:26 +0000 UTCNice Choice Great Director This is his second major Hollywood directorial presentation Formerly This director did a series of low budget movies in the Netherlands and was considered to direct Episode 6 Return of the Jedi The director wasquoted as saying Lucas decided not to use me because he figured 10 minutes into the film all the Jedi’s would be fucking

2024-01-26 14:20:15 +0000 UTCJust make sure they get the right English dub for Akira when it’s finally picked!!! 1989 one has bad dialogue by Streamline Pictures 2001 one is much better by Pioneer I usually don’t like dub but I think it really works with this movie.
