"WOKE GARBAGE!"

You're not dumb. This movie is stupid :P

Chris Tucker's character was over-the-top annoying on purpose, like a cartoon character. I think he's brilliant, but I get it if you hate him.

growing up everyone i knew loved this movie, but as an adult i have found its very divisive. i can see why many people think it might be campy or silly or just not have very much there, but for me, its just so much fun, one moment after another of unexpected randomness that nonetheless fits the TONE of the movie super well. every character reacts to this acid trip of a universe in a different way, from bruce willis just being done with it, to bilbo treating it ultra seriously, to chris tucker and gary oldman just going ham. it may not all make sense, it may not all be necessary (why are the stones IN the diva? well... cause its fun and weird), but if you just accept that it can be a lot of un

I don't remember liking that movie. It was visually interesting, but that was about it. I did not hate it enough to turn the movie off, but I might have been tempted. The movie was directed by a French guy. The French also consider Jerry Lewis to be a god. It looks like the director married the 21-year-old star actress Milla Jovovich around the time the movie was shot. Apparently that marriage ended about a year or two later. However, Milla (born 1975) was apparently 1 year older than his wife at the time as he had previously married actress Maïwenn Aurélia Nedjma Le Besco (born 1976) when she was 16 years old. About 2 years later, Sir Terry Pratchett wrote a fantasy novel called The Fifth ELEPHANT which is prominent enough to have a wikipedia entry. I always meant to read that, but I never did.

This movie was greatly influenced be the magazine Heavy Metal and the cartoon movie Heavy Metal. These were a big deal in early 80’s. The atmosphere was like Bladerunner. I believe this was written in mid80’ by French writer/director. My first viewing was I really liked it but yes the Chris Tucker character was very annoying but not enough for me not to watch again. I basically ignored his character. But later got to enjoy his role. The fact that you didn’t care for this movie is not a big deal. You gave it a shot and missed the mark. Thanks.

There are movies from the 20th century that don't, "land", in the 21st century in the manner intended from the time of creation. The Fifth Element is a film that "aims above the audience", with random scenes, a multitude of characters, and circumstances that are never explained. My favorite teacher from 1968 once said, "the best movies don't explain everything - you have to grow your imagination to contain the unknown and the unexpected". The Fifth Element does have ties to the Superhero genre. If Bruce Willis is the hero, he has no superpowers - except luck. But unlike most superhero movies, The Fifth Element has a wealth of secondary characters creating a world that feels alive in a practical way, not CGI dead in a video game sorta way. For that reason alone, The Fifth Element is a joy to me after repeat watches.

You guys are not dumb.

Don’t blame me; I voted for Time After Time! 😜

You know, a lot of what you said reminded me of my first watches of the is movie. I DID enjoy it, but I also know I loved the first half of the movie way more than the back half. The world building in that first half was so rich and layered and then they just LEAVE it. And yet, so many moments through out stuck out in my memory and pulled me back into rewatching it and appreciating the whole, even if I still cringe at some of Tucker's shrieking. And like I said, bits of this movie's dialogue are just incorperated into my lexicon now. Something I actually caught on this rewatch was the morphing aliens being the ones bringing in their own bomb that blew up Zorg. I think Zorg's bomb and their bomb were different, but just conviently timed at the end to pick up the 5 second detonation Zorg's bomb blew up on because yeah, that scene confused me fore YEARS. " why do the aliens working independently have the ability to trigger Zorg's bomb?" They don't. hah.

I don't love the Fifth Element. But I do think it's one of those movies that grows on you after initial watches.

4K eeewww ear hair. welcome to the "getting old crew".

Don't eat the ass, Jovet.

Steven Johnson

We are what we eat??

I’m really glad you guys give your honest opinion. When you really do like a film we can actually take your word for it.

PIG

"We're just assholes." *Lights cigarette* We all are, kid.

Steven Johnson

It's not for everyone fer sure fer sure. My first watch I thought it was so so. My wife loves it, so I get to watch it...from afar...every couple of months or so.

Monty Crawford

It is a sensory overload type movie, rewatches get better and better.
