POLL - Audience Cut February Patron’s Choice

We will watch & discuss the winner of this poll in February. Neither Alex or Josh has seen any of these films.
The losing films will return next month if they reach at least 15% of the vote.

Comments

Nice winner :D

Matt Newmark

OHHH FUCK YES! STARGATE! I joined after the poll but I'm so happy to see it won. 🥹

Lady Beyond The Wall

Come on guys, let's get Akira to the threshold! It's too good (and influential in the world of anime) to not at least return!

Michael Mannisto

Blues Brothers is the true classic here! Others are all great but… ;)

Stephen Wright

How is Akira and The Abyss losing to Stargate? Woof.

John King

Would have voted Blues Brothers, but was feeling bad for Akira, which is incredible.

John M.

Not anytime soon

Josh (Target Audience)

I really hope watching the movie leads to watching the series as well.

snthd

Unfortunately. There's no doubt that Akira is the most influential film on this poll.

Ca$hWednesday

The Stargate series is much better than the movie. Not that the movie is terrible, but it is just kinda OK. I think people are voting for this for the wrong reasons...

Michael Ducharme

Stargate is great. So much so that I almost didn't vote for my own recommendation (The Blues Brothers). To be honest, I probably would have recommended Stargate too if somebody hadn't beaten me to it.

Regan

If you happen to like the stargate lore and then decide to start watching stargate series as well, I will probably be subbed to you guys for life lol

valen

You say debahcul. I say "Debbicle."

Steven Johnson

Hahahaha!

Steven Johnson

Ish. We saw the same thing happen throughout the 90s. We had a rush of Dinosaur movies (Carnisaur, Jurassic Park, Dinosaurs.) Volcano movies (Dante's Peak, Volcano, others.) Asteroid movies (Deep Impact, Armageddon, Asteroid, Meteor.) Alien invasion flicks (Independence Day, Mars Attacks!). It just seemed to be the trend from the tail end of the 80s through the late 90s of having a bunch of studios take a crack at the same idea. I honestly miss it, because we got to see the same concepts done in many different ways at drastically different budgets.

Steven Johnson

That’s not fair, we definitely wait until at least the first line of dialogue.

Josh (Target Audience)

After the Quantum Leap somehow beating out Twin Peaks debacle, seeing this happen again with Blues Brothers losing out to Stargate of all things is really disappointing.

Ken R

I voted for Akira because I don't want to see something I like shit on from the opening credits.

Andrew Skow

I think you guys would enjoy Blues Brothers (a musical mad cap comedy) the most. With The Abyss with a close second. Be aware there is more than one version of each movie on video.

Mike Rogers

Certainly not a kids film

AzoriusMage

Akira is probably the most unique film on this list, likely to be something you haven't seen anything like before. But because it is animated, and from Japan, despite how much it inspired Western animators, I doubt it's gonna do strong in a general poll.

Nolan

Akira is an animated film from Japan based off of a manga of the same name. It influenced and inspired a lot of animation directors when it was brought over to the West, for all the stuff it managed to accomplish in the medium in the days of pre-computer animation and rendering. It was all hand drawn. It also challenges the hell out of the idea of animation being "For kids"

Nolan

I voted The Abyss but the Blues Brothers is a very close second.

Monty Crawford

The Blues Brothers has some of the most insane car chases ever committed to film. Love that movie

Jon1701

Unpopular opinion: the theatrical release of The Abyss is superior to the director’s cut

Gaius Frakking Baltar

Show > Movie

StonyD

Agreed. I just don't get it.

StonyD

Okay you must have already seen Hunt for Red October then. Cool cool.

StonyD

The Blues Brothers is also available in two versions (theatrical and extended), although the true director's cut is lost. It's one of my favorite movies; I omitted it from my recent list of favorites primarily because I don't think its middle two quarters have enough plot to sustain their length, so the film sags in the middle. The beginning and ending are perfect.

Anthony Bernacchi

Voted Abyss, MUST be directors cut, it makes the movie make sense. Stargate is pretty good too.

MrDeadstu

Hollywood lacks imagination. Underwater film does well......quick they like underwater films commission them all!

AzoriusMage

I probably should have seen Abyss at some point, but that was one of several weird underwater movies that came out between 1989 and 1990. The others were DeepStar Six, Leviathan, Lords of the Deep, The Evil Below, and The Rift. Why so many movies on the exact same topic within about one year? It looks like people like Stargate, so it must be better than I thought. I don't think I have ever heard of the movie Akira. That movie must have gaining popularity after it was released.

Chtphr Rrr

I love Stargate, if you enjoy it, it’s a good series to get into being 10 seasons long with two spin offs. Film is good but the series is far better.

Richard Davies

Haven't watched the Stargate movie but I can highly recommend the show

Peeper

That’s part of the reason we rotate between a poll choice and a choice from us. If we ever have more time to do more than 2 a month then we will get to do more polls and choose more ourselves.

Josh (Target Audience)

A discussion on the discord felt that polling for which to watch wasn't the best way. Take our suggestions but pick what you think you and your audience would enjoy.

AzoriusMage

Awesome, looking forward to that! Thanks guys!

TalynStarburst

The Blues Brothers is one of the top comedies of all time and you should see it regardless of the poll just for pop culture relevance.

Jef Etters

We compiled a list of movies from the recommendations that we haven’t seen and got a high amount of likes and/or looked interesting to us. These are 4 from the list. The others will be added in future polls. Working on a spreadsheet with more detail of what we’ve seen & what’s been recommended. That should be coming soon

Josh (Target Audience)

I'd like to see The Blues Brothers, as it's a favorite of mine AND it's something far outside what you tend to watch.

Joe Concepts

As with all Audience Cut episodes the reaction will be Patreon exclusive so no worries there

Josh (Target Audience)

Voting on this poll is like voting for my favourite child. I love all 4 of these.

Ca$hWednesday

The Blues Brothers is the only one I've seen, although I don't know that it makes a good youtube reaction video as so much of the music has to be edited to avoid copyright problems.

Chtphr Rrr

How do you guys determine these top four? Were there a lot of choices of movies that you had already seen?

TalynStarburst

Blues Brothers for me is one of the most over-rated films ever

AzoriusMage

Hehe! Yeah, that's quite a commitment. And honestly, I did a rewatch recently and it got tired after a few seasons. Still can't get far into SG Universe. Stick with Trek - that's decades of viewing right there. ;)

Josh (Target Audience)

Why not? It's only 70000000000 episodes long! The Abyss is great, but the lead in Stargate edges it out for me.

Steven Johnson

"We have Blade Runner at home..."

Steven Johnson

Come on Blues Brothers! I want an excuse to watch it again!!!

Silk

Please don't

AzoriusMage

Well to quell any hopes, we will not be doing the series anytime soon

Josh (Target Audience)

I vote for The Abyss, as Stargate seems to obvious and I suspect it's getting the votes in the hope that you'll then do the series. The Abyss is a decent stand alone.

Andy Frankham-Allen

Stargate! The f*^& is wrong with you. Akira!

AzoriusMage

Torture as all are top films. Picked the Blues Brothers as it’s one of the best comedies of all-time with outstanding musical performances. All are superb films though.
