UNCUT REACTION - The Fifth Element (1997) 10K SUBSCRIBER SPECIAL

Comments

This is a fun movie, it’s fast editing style makes it rewatchable in a way it would not be if the story had been slowed down and scenes were not layered General Stutter was played be Jonathan noble who died a few years back . He was recognizable as the English speaking man in the X- files And The king of liars in t] The adventures of baron munchhhausen. Zit is a good movie for what it is . It didn’t change my life. But it didn’t make e want my money back. Been absent for the last couple weeks holidays and all Reloaded invincible into my queue and plan to respond to it It was 2024 is gonna be a good year

Thanks guys! I haven't seen this one years so it was a fun re-watch for me. For me, Bruce and Chris kept me entertained, otherwise, just ok. Congrats on 10k!

Gary Leyh

Both are comedies but There's Something About Mary is raunchy comedy and Mousehunt is family comedy

James Bottas

I have seen neither

Ee'char

I have the DVD, so am watching using VLC media player. Not the first time it's happened though; Amazon Prime once had a film that appeared to be a few minutes longer than my DVD length, only to find out the playback was slower on Amazon

Adam, if I understand you correctly, you shouldn't feel "bad" because they didn't get into your suggestion or poll pick. The whole point is to expose these two to possible hidden gems or classics they have never taken the time to watch. They will love some of them, sometimes in ways that surprise or confuse us (for example their fresh-eyed approval on TMP helped me see that film in a different light). Then you will have ones we, in our collective pop culture nostalgia, consider works of art (like Wrath of Khan) and it won't move their needle in the same way it did ours. That's okay. For me, that's the joy of watching these things through fresh, "young" eyes.

StonyD

It's a very fast paced movie. I wonder if watching so much slow paced 60s and 80s Trek has made you more comfortable with that style of presentation. This movie does require you to pick up quite a bit very quickly through context.

Rich Durbin

I also always prefere the truth. Of course, they are allowed to feel bad about one of our favourite films. But I also feel bad when I watch it. My brain has trouble accepting the situation because it doesn't understand what went wrong. Really, I can't explain why he couldn't catch them in this film. *MonkeyFacePalm*

Adam from Germany

agreed, Andrew.

Castanea

Kind of surprised you weren't more into it but no problem. The look of this movie borrows a lot from the Harry Canyon segment of The Heavy Metal movie. I dig the cartoonishness of parts of the movie and the inventiveness. It's pure cinema.

Mike Rogers

LOL

Regan

High appearance fee

Josh (Target Audience)

Why isn't the cat in more reactions?!?

Regan

Yes! This is also one of those classic 90s sc-fi movie I could re-watch forever.

Michael Mannisto

I don't care what anyone says, I fucking love this movie. It might be my favorite cult classic of all time. I know it's not perfect, but it's so much fun I don't care. It's got the perfect mix of sci-fi, action, comedy, and drama that just satisfies every itch. The world building is phenomenal, and for the most part it actually feels like a lived in world. It's also a quintessentially 90s movie, which brings back a lot of nostalgia. Bruce Willis is great, as always, and this might be my favorite role from Milla. This is one of the few movies I can watch over and over, and never get tired of. Definitely gets better and better on subsequent views.

Michael Mannisto

Nice! Now you guys have to do Stargate (1994). One of my favorite science fiction films of all time. Please and thank you!

Matt F

We are watching the Blu-ray

Josh (Target Audience)

Lee Evans is good in a couple things (a couple things is all I know him from lol).. he's good in There's Something About Mary, and really good in Mousehunt with Nathan Lane

James Bottas

I love this movie, maybe even more now that I've just watched it get derided so hard lol. It's a visual feast of space opera-ness and it prioritizes FUN. Bruce is at the height of his powers here and Milla Jovovich is instantly iconic. It's ok to not like a movie, obviously... I'm feeling very defensive of a movie I like right now.. I admit it lol. Alex. You mad at us dude? It was a fun watch along as always, thanks guys

James Bottas

The rubber-faced sailer guy is British "comedian" Lee Evans who found fame in the UK in the 90s. I never found him funny in the first place, even if people older than me (born before 1981) did. HOWEVER. I would recommend this film to ANYONE. It's pure "take your brain out" entertainment. Media doesn't have to be groundbreaking, it just has to entertain. Or keep your mind occupied for 90 minutes or so. And that's what this film does.

Ee'char

THIS is exactly why I come to this channel: Honesty. It's refreshing because I don't feel like you are trying to sell me anything. A hundred other reactors would have been like "Ooh that was SO COOL" or fake-crying for clicks. When you watch something, you react like humans. Sometimes you like it, sometimes you don't. Thank you for that.

StonyD

27:30 They grew/printed her with the "surviving" hand attached. Do the aliens have human girl hands? She's engineered, like the scientist was speculating, like Bilbo repeatedly said "they made her (perfect)". She is meant to defend earth. She was created as a human. 1:54:00 - the 20th century priest had the key, he could have disposed of the body. Bilbo's boy buddy, David, was sent ahead to Egypt. That's why he's there at the end all of the sudden. Maybe he dragged out the corpse. Or any of the priests with who had the key in the intervening centuries. Alex, much of your time is spent arguing with a comments section in your head. It's like a bitter RiffTrax. I don't know if it's your thing, but maybe engaging in some recreational respiration before the next movie might help you enjoy it. We got about 15 seconds of war is bad here and another 20 seconds of whaling bad in ST4. You aren't being brow beaten.

Andrew Skow

I don't know what software you're using to watch this, but I have to keep on pausing VLC player in order for your video to catch up with mine?

Ee'char

It really hurt a bit to see you suffering so overwhelmed. :-D The movie is fantasticly extreme :-D Ok, I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings and I don't want mine to be hurt either. I do realise that there are discrepancies here when it comes to films. - But that's not a bad thing. Watching Star Trek TNG with both of you is enough for me. I just want you to know that - for me it's also about supporting you with this comment. Information about consumers' feelings is always valuable.

Adam from Germany

Yeah. This movie definitely isn't for everybody. It has completely unique designs and costumes created by Jean-Paul Gaultier, but it seems like it is intentionally over the top. I love the editing jokes throughout, how they will cut to a joke mid scene. It is also cool how Bruce Willis and Gary Oldman never actually meet. I haven't seen another movie where the main villain and the main protag are constantly at odds in story, but they never fight or exchange any dialogue at all. It feels like the director, editors, and designers did the best they could with such a nonsensical script. Milla Jovovich and Chris Tucker were both nominated for Razzys as well.

Lance Bivins

it's "blown out", not sucked... just like Data said in The Naked Now. A common mistake ;-)

Ee'char

One big thing to realize here is Luc Besson is a Frenchie, and some might take offense at me saying that, but the cultural differences between France and the rest of the western world do play a bit of a part in the "weirdness" that Americans probably get from this movie. The movie is very heavily inspired by the "Metal Hurlent" comic series from France... The American version of that is "Heavy Metal." One of the hallmarks of both those comics (other than lots of sex, violence, etc) is an emphasis on artistic design over necessarily telling a fully coherent story. In that regard The Fifth Element is downright solid. If you guys ever watch the 1981 animated movie Heavy Metal you'll see a number of the influences from that in this. I do think this is a movie that gets better each time you watch it. It's definitely a big budget art house film in a lot of ways with a very eclectic bunch of choices. For example, Luc Besson chose Bruce, because Bruce is cool, and that's literally the only reason Bruce Willis is in this movie. Imagine just making your dream movie. That's all Luc Besson did here. He made his previous movie "Leon : The Professional" on a very low budget just to prove he could make a movie, to get the money to make The Fifth Element. On the subject of Ruby Rodd I just want to say... If you put yourself back in 1997, what a prediction for the future Ruby is. Chris Tucker owns that role and frankly put himself out there. It's absolutely fucking silly, but when you think about TikTok personalities and YouTubers and Twitch streamers... Would Ruby be that far out of sync with what we got today? I did want to address Alex directly in this reaction. His not so subtle frustrations. I just wanted to say: Don't get it twisted, man. We, The Target Audience, love ya both. I'm sure it starts to get irritating having dorks push up their taped up glasses and going "UH, ACT-CHEW-ALLY...!" But it's only because you have a passionate audience. Don't sweat it too much, buddy. Like I said to you guys back on the stream, this thing should never become a stressful pain in the ass for either of you. Multi-pass.

Damn, Josh! Brutal

Jovet

If your first thought about a movie is "I like they had practical effects" the movie is in trouble.

Ken R

7:30 No, it's not that kind of lord. It's the feudal lord type.

Jovet

Brilliant news let's keep going! Looking forward to watching this with you been a while since I watched it

AzoriusMage

Poll was on YouTube last month

Josh (Target Audience)

Aw, shit! Congratulations guys! I must have missed the poll for this? Great movie.
