This episode is a classic Trek type scenario of the βBadmiralβ doing something or in this case having done something that sets up the dilemma of the week. That being said his solution of giving both sides weapons was always bound to fail as it didnβt solve the argument and his interpretation of it not breaking the Prime Directive because it was even on both sides was flawed. Interference on both sides even if equal is still interference.

I did watch one of the episodes today on BBC America and I must say I was pretty disappointed. The episode I watched had the last three or four minutes cut off, including a really important closing scene. I never noticed that when I watched an episode on there before. Very uncool.

You mentioned that now it feels like you're the ones saying "you have to remember the time period this was made". That might be the best summary of the difference between the first 2 seasons and seasons 3-7. Seasons 1 and 2 are much more dated to the late 80s, both in visual style and writing style, but are enjoyable if you're willing to get past that. Seasons 3-7 are essentially timeless and don't need any such caveats, so people who see TNG that way can find it a bit jarring to go back to the more dated early seasons.

I never hated or even disliked this episode, mainly because I bought into the love story. That doesn't mean I didn't like the rest of it, or rather most of it. I definitely don't have the sometimes visceral hatred a lot of people seem to have for Seasons 1 and 2, although there are several episodes I'm kind of ambivalent about. Just wait until you see some of the episodes where everything is clicking for everyone.
I remember around that time when the reviews and reception for the show starting coming out there was some talk that if the show wasn't in first-run syndication it might not have lasted past 2 seasons. Since it wasn't connected to a network it aired on different days or times depending on the market. In my area it was on Saturday nights at 10:30. Right now the only place I know of other than streaming where it's available to watch is BBC America. In fact, in less than an hour from when I'm writing this four episodes from Season 2 will be airing, one really good, one great, one decent, and one not so good. That's my opinion of them, anyway. Take it for what it's worth.

Great discussion also. And never appologize for liking an episode we despise haha. You ALWAYS bring an interesting new view to the episode. I personally don't really like it still (mostly because I don't care for the old-man performance), but I really enjoyed seeing what you enjoyed about it, and I understand that you enjoyed the many twists in the story :)

Haha. (A couple minutes in) Itβs fun to watch you ask why bother to cast a young actor in the role π
