Which Star Trek TOS episodes should we revisit?

If we were to revisit Star Trek TOS episodes for a discussion video (not reaction), which episodes would you like us to include?

This is just an idea at this point, nothing decided yet.

This one NEEDED a sequel, in many fans' opinion. In one of the novels which was published years later, one of Mother Horta's kids joined Starfleet and was seen aboard Kirk's ship - in, ironically, the Geology Department. He was outfitted by a Universal Translator device (similar to what was seen in "Metamorphosis") to enable communication with the humanoids on board. Very interesting crew choices, there - and not so far-fetched, as we saw a LOT of aliens in the Big Crew Scene in TMP.

I grew up watching TNG, my older brother was into DS9 & got me into Trek. However, my Star Trek "reawakening" started in 2009 with the Star Trek reboot film. I was blown away with how it looked and when I got home after a few drinks & a smoke session... I managed to actually find Star Trek on TV (back in the analog era) and it was an amazing episode where the away team beam down to a cave and battle wits with a homicidal shag rug. Ever since I've been hooked. "Devil in the Dark" would be a fun rewatch, make sure to throw a couple synthehol brews back beforehand, you won't regret it. Live Long & prosper!

Billy T. Riker

Update-I just watched your The City on the Edge of Forever and Alex was pretttty buzzed..It will be brand new and watching it all over again! As a long time trek watcher you really opened my eyes to episodes I detested as a kid because I either "didn't get it", or they just played the same episodes way too often. Let That Be Your Last Battlefield The Empath Is There in Truth No Beauty?

Badger

Devil in the dark, "Let that be your last battleground", "The world is hollow, for I have touched the sky"

Josh (Target Audience)

Should you at all?

AzoriusMage

I don't know individually. I do know that culturally TOS had an amazing lasting impact on the country that was acknowledged by them as a cast with their footprints at Grauman's Chinese Theater https://www.seeing-stars.com/ImagePages/ChineseForecourtPhoto(StarTrek).shtml and each of the main cast received their own stars on Hollywood Blvd. which has never before or since been done. From Shatner in 1983 to the last Koenig in 2012. Nichelle being the recruiter for diversity in NASA or the president of the United States, Obama, acknowledging how important Leonard Nimoy and Spock had been to him on the actor's death. Perhaps you should do a video on that?

Gail Seaton Humbert

Any episode that's much loved that you were lukewarm on, just to see if that changes or not: So if I'm remembering right: Doomsday Machine, Balance of Terror, The Trouble with Tribbles.

John M.

Doomsday Machine, Naked Time (to contrast it with Naked Now), Tholian Web, Charlie X

Ken R

The Alternative Factor Catspaw And the Children shall lead Each season's worst episode imo, that can be just as interesting as revisiting great episodes.

Phillip Grischa

I’m suggesting 2 per season, Season 1 Balance of terror Conscience of the king Season 2 Cats paw A piece of the action Season 3 Is there in truth no beauty? That which survives

Thicketdweller

Hmm, there are episodes I THINK you should revisit, because they may or may not be relevant later, but they won't be relevant until MUCH later. The Changeling maybe, now you've seen TMP, and Space Seed now you've seen TWoK, perhaps.

Nolan

They're watching them in release order, so they won't get to Star Trek 6 till sometime during their season 3 coverage

Justin DiBari

I got one, a fav of Alex. A Piece of the Action! Or how about a Revisiting Journey to Babel?

Duane Chancey

A Taste of Armageddon Let this be your last battlefield The Devil in the Dark Is there in truth no beauty

Andreas Schmitt

The Doomsday Machine. As someone else said, you didn’t seem to enjoy it as much.. but it’s an episode you talked a lot about revisiting at some point to see if your views would change.

TalynStarburst

My thoughts as well!

TalynStarburst

Josh ... Alex .... ? Which episode or episodes made a deep impression upon the both of you? I would visit THAT [those] episode(s). That's what I recommend: start with that premise, or if some other criteria is also important, keep that first as your foundation to make a decision, and build up from there. That being said, I would include "The Trouble with Tribbles" and "Mirror, Mirror" in this first review, or else save that one for another, future review. Two other episodes that also have lasting impact in 'Trek, as an overall, 300-year-long saga (as it existed up through the early 2020's), are also "Amok Time" and "Journey to Babel" which reveal a lot of Vulcan history. Avoiding any spoilers, just keep in mind that there are uncounted surprises in store for the entire rest of the 'Trek saga - across all 12 (as of 2023) Star Trek series'..... and I'm anticipating how it will be to see your jaws drop over and over again!

Rhett Coates

I have a fascination for "Court Martial" since first airing just before my 10th birthday more than 55 years ago. The story assumes that Records Officer Finney is dead, right up to the moment Defense Attorney Cogley declares the man's alive and hiding onboard the Enterprise!

Edd Mark Starr

I think Errand of Mercy, Day of the Dove, and the Trouble with Tribbles as a set. They are the primary Klingon episodes. We now have a Klingon as part of the TNG crew, so maybe a discussion of Klingons in TOS. While they are also present in Friday's Child and A Private Little War, you don't get nearly as much characterization of the race as you do in the other three (and Savage Curtain doesn't really count).

Nerd's Gold

I really think you guys underrated Balance of Terror. The story and the performances are great.

Toysruskiddd

Balance of Terror

Toysruskiddd

I think you should revisit "Doomsday Machine". You didn't seem to enjoy it even though it is a really good episode. I am just wondering if you would have a different opinion watching it a second time.

Edweirdo

Spock's Brain or we riot.

StonyD

The TOS movies as well, which set the template for the look of the Klingons going forward

Paul Rymer

I guess 'Balance of Terror' for two reasons. 1. You might have been over-hyped for it at the time due to the strong praise you'd seen from us. 2. It may have some relevance to TNG......can't say any more for spoilers.

Numinous2019

Balance of Terror

Matthew McKinnon-Gray

Balance of Terror.

Chuck Rice

"Space Seed", to see if knowing about Wrath of Khan changes any of your thoughts about the episode. And "Is There In Truth No Beauty", to see if you think it holds up as well on re-watches. Personally, I think it's great on first watch, but only 'okay' on later watches, when you know all the twists.

Jeff Cornell

I think you should revisit an episode that wasn't one of your initial favorites. If I remember correctly you were both a little lukewarm about "Balance of Terror", and since you love Mark Lenard so much you could enjoy his first Trek appearance again.

KatWithAttitude

Good choices

Collin Freeman

I think Balance of Terror is worth revisiting given the current watching of TNG. Not sure if there is anything more to be gained by watching or discussing The Doomsday Machine, though I personally love the episode.

Collin Freeman

Good idea

Collin Freeman

I’d go for that

Collin Freeman

I think Man Trap (back to the beginning) and The Menagerie (in light of your favorable response to Star Trek 3 TSFS, since they have a similar theme and premise). What the heck, throw in City on the Edge of Forever for good measure.

Collin Freeman

I’d consider revisiting the second pilot “Where No Man Has Gone Before”, to discuss the differences in several characters, sets, costumes and so on.

Paul Rymer

A Private Little War One of your top reactions on the channel because of Josh losing it with hysterical laughter. But in the end you guys did say there may be more discussion to have on that episode if only you could regain composure lol. And now that we just had Admiral Mark Jameson on TNG who pulled something very similar there's perhaps more layers to compare and discuss

James Bottas

I enjoyed your commentary in The Naked Now about how it differs from The Naked Time. It was very insightful about how the intoxication presents itself differently in both shows, and how in TOS each person reacts differently and it's not explained that it's acting like alcohol until much later. It might be interesting to compare something else. Maybe Q and Trelane? Or perhaps Riker and Gary Mitchell when they get godlike powers.

Bret Kay

The big 3 Klingon Episodes "Erand of Mercy", "Trouble with Tribbles" & "Day of the Dove". There's a couple episodes late in Tng Season 1 early Season 2 that Explore/flesh out the Klingons and it be interesting to see what elements the Writers took & what elements the writers discarded when creating this new Klingon Identity

Justin DiBari

Balance of Terror Doomsday Machine I brought both up on the last live stream as deserving rewatches but without looking at them as "action" episodes, which I do not think was what either were going for

James Bottas

"Is There In Truth No Beauty" deserves to be revisited, for the wonderful performances of Nimoy and Diana Muldaur if nothing else. It would also be interesting to discuss Ralph Sensesky's show notes, which include his "appalled" reaction to the visual effects meant to represent the Ambassador's ugly appearance (the effects were added in post production without his knowledge). That story and the other challenges he faced while directing the episode are detailed here: https://senensky.com/is-there-in-truth-no-beauty/

Gaius Frakking Baltar

Where No Man Has Gone Before, and The Man Trap - if you want to go back to beginning and see what you think having watched the series.

Bret Kay

Don't forget "The Children Shall Lead"

Justin DiBari

I'd say go back to the start and take a look at your very first thoughts on what you were watching. First impressions etc.

Tuomas Leone

Hmm. Tough one fellas! Amok Time comes to mind. Journey to Babel, City on the Edge of Forever, Elaan of Troyius. Any of those of interest? Seems tou guys like the more “world building” episodes.

Chris S.

Revisit the ones you think COULD or SHOULD have sequels. Revisit the ones that do have sequels but in another medium like comics of novels.

Michael Nemo

To quote the late Randy Savage at WrestleMania VI, "Suffering builds character, and you're gonna have a lot of character when we're done with you!" ;)

CM Waters

😉 Actually maybe episodes you changed your opinions on after watching the whole series.

David Wayne Fox

There is just so many good ones hard decision Enterprise Incident, The doomsday Machine

Dean Golliher

Mirror Mirror

MrDeadstu

This is a fair choice

Josh (Target Audience)

Duh. The Empath.

David Wayne Fox

Yes.

Michael Mannisto

It wouldn’t be directly related to TNG, but I’m sure we would do some comparisons while discussing like we do now with TOS

Josh (Target Audience)

The good ones! Lol jk. Is this in general, or in relation to what you've seen of TNG so far? If it's the latter, then maybe the ones that are the most similar to early TNG eps to compare and contrast the styles and approaches of the two. Or perhaps ones that are Kirk heavy, to discuss how he and Picard approach situations differently. If it's the former, then... the good ones! 😃

Michael Mannisto

Do you want us to suffer?

Josh (Target Audience)

Miri, the changeling, and the deadly years.BWAA HAA HAA!🤪🖖
