UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TNG S1E15 - 11001001

UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TNG S1E15 - 11001001

Comments

The main plot of this episode with the Bynars and their homeworld is pretty dry stuff, but they're an interesting concept nonetheless. Definitely a unique episode, and quite competently executed. The real strength though is in seeing the crew during their down time. Picard and Riker teaming up was overdue given how Riker has been overshadowing Picard in quite a few eps. Their shared appreciation of Minuet and old world charms in general, and once they realized the situation they worked effectively as a team. We see some more building blocks of Data and Geordi's friendship. Parrises squares is mentioned for the first time, and it's cool they set up Worf and Tasha to spend some time together outside of work. Wesley was used pretty well here as well. No gimmicks or attitude, just doing his job. I did find it funny that he said he can't be more specific about the trouble in engineering right before he gets more specific about the trouble in engineering. Data's evolution as a character is really shining through now as well. Despite having as much right as anyone to down time, he beats himself up over not serving 24/7, he takes charge immediately upon seeing the problem and acts, and when they realize the Enterprise has been stolen, he takes a tally of starfleet ships in the area that could help. And according to the official blueprints the Galaxy class has 16 holodecks. 8 of the kind we typically see which are the small kind at about 10x10 metres, 4 mid size that are approximately 20x20 metres, but more trapezoidal, and 4 massive 20x60 metre holodecks, 12 times the size of the room we typically see. There are also 20 transporter rooms, compared to I believe 4 on Kirk's Enterprise. A thought I had with this one is that they should have just evacuated the stardrive section(fewer people), and separated the ship. It would be a shame to lose the Enterprise, but if you have the saucer separate while the secondary hull is being evacuated, at least you save that half of the ship. Very good episode. It can be a bit slow at times, but it's fairly strong as S1 eps go, and it's certainly memorable.

Timothy Nikiforovs

That actor was actually in The Mark of Gideon as the member of the council that beamed aboard.

Mark Shampine

Same

Mark Shampine

I like the Steadicam-in-the-halls scene. It's creepy and unusual and does its job of telling that part of the story very well.

Anthony Bernacchi

Well, ENT is 16:9 HD with CGI effects (sorry if that's a spoiler!). But also, it's a generational thing. TOS and TAS are the only Star Trek shows from before I was born, and I clearly remember when the phrase "Classic Trek" referred to TOS and TOS alone. Nowadays, people seem to use "Classic Trek" to mean everything from TOS through ENT! (And they're starting to use "Classic Doctor Who" in reference to the 2005-2010 era!)

Anthony Bernacchi

Starfleet didn't actually change the insignia to honor the Enterprise; that's a fan myth derived from a costuming mistake in "The Omega Glory." It's a long story which I explained in my YouTube comments on the guys' reaction to that episode.

Anthony Bernacchi

They are watching the show with subtitles, I believe, even though we don't see the subtitles anymore in the reactions.

Anthony Bernacchi

Also, one of the Bynars mentions the "probe" that affected the holodeck, i.e. the Jarada probe from "The Big Goodbye."

Anthony Bernacchi

This was Majel Barrett's first performance as the computer voice on TNG (it was played by other actresses in the earlier episodes). Fans have suggested that the Bynars installed her voice as part of their upgrades (and, unlike Minuet, she sticks around).

Anthony Bernacchi

I always assumed there was a treadmill kind of thing going on. After all, what if Dixon Hill needs to take a train to New York as part of an investigation?

Anthony Bernacchi

Deanna Troi actually has a office on the ship and sees various crew members that are struggling with emotional situation and problems. Space traveling here is treated much like ocean traveling where they keep their own doctor, nurses, maintenance counselors, etc.Deanna will also just counsel married couples and children if need be. Troi also not being a full blooded Betazoid like her mother has difficulty reading minds often. She is more skilled as an empath. Her first job is with crew mental functioning.

I get what you’re saying now, I’ll make sure to include cuts in the visual sync moments

Josh (Target Audience)

yeah so if i click the same time as you there is a doubling effect because I'm a little ahead or behind. so to quickly deal with it. i watch your snipet at the same time as my video and as soon as there is a cut- a starfield with the ship and then a cut to the inside of the bridge. i can use those to quickly see which one is ahead and which is behind. so then I can quickly pause-unpause the one that is ahead. usually takes 3 cuts to get it right. i love what you do. it's absolutely your call

Castanea

Is the first 10 or so seconds of the beginning of the episode on screen not working for you to sync? I’m trying to understand what you mean

Josh (Target Audience)

It amazes me how when TNG came out, TOS did feel rather ancient…whereas today, looking back at ENT 20 years ago…the show doesn’t look or feel very old.

Derek Orr

I was 9 when TOS first aired and my sisters and I, and even our Dad really liked it. I never watched TAS so I need to go back and do that. I guess I was afraid they would dumb it down, but they really didn't. So at age 31 TNG came on and I was curious and a bit skeptical. By the halfway point it was appointment (and VCR) TV for me.

David Scudder

Yes she had a lot of problems she had to overcome which I won't discuss here, but it made me smile that much more every time she returned.

David Scudder

Wow that's cool.

David Scudder

Agree. Minuet was a casting grand slam.

David Scudder

I think it was meant as playful, but the character directions for their reactions in the scene lends me to think the director didn't get it.

StonyD

Didn’t you think that Riker was being kind of a dick to Geordi and Data?

Aramis Calcutt

I do it by playing sound on both videos simultaneously and then micropausing one or the other to sync up

JD Nevesytrof

love you guys but it REALLY helps to give a few cuts in the start of the episode so we can see if we are ahead of or behind you in syncing

Castanea

Riker Character Trait Unlocked: Johnny Frakes bringing his real-world trombone talent to the mix.

StonyD

I think the only "problem" with season one is that the characters and the show are still figuring themselves out.

Jovet

Also remember, you don't know in advance which dialogue is important or not. But it happens with any reacters, "Oh, no you missed that great line!"

Joe Concepts

Great Simpsons parody of that too, with the original singer.

Joe Concepts

My Dad was a Trek watcher back in the TOS years, and the early movies were out in theaters when I was growing up. I kind of liked the show and saw the movies a lot, and I was excited or at least curious to watch a new Trek show. And me and my Dad kept up with the new show. TNG was always "my" show, but it even felt rough to me in the early seasons.

Joe Concepts

Plus the shuttles have independent transporters

Jef Etters

The writer at this point also seem like they don't know if she's an empath or a telepath or both. Even as an empath, I don't think there's been rules established on how it works. Like sometimes she can sense feelings through a viewscreen. Her character just seems undeveloped in general. This results in a lot of "oh let's just get rid of her somehow this episode".

Ca$hWednesday

I often have the subtitles on whatever I'm watching just in case someone talks over something I'm trying to follow, it helps a lot.

JD Nevesytrof

That’s why they will play up he characters as a counselor in coming seasons

Scarpad’s Domain

Pro Nerd Tip: ASCII is 7-bits.

Jovet

I like your explanation

Collin Freeman

I agree to a certain extent. I think Gene was a great idea and concept man, but not so good a writer. This was very apparent in the dialog in many of his scripts. If you ever hear a character being too stiff, reciting too much or basic exposition, or sounding like they are on a kid’s Saturday morning adventure show, it was likely Gene who wrote it.

Collin Freeman

Maybe a bit of both

Collin Freeman

Tend to agree, although I think there are more less-than-good episodes than any other season.

Collin Freeman

I agree with you. In fact, I think season 2 has really good episodes, including my favorite: Measure of a Man.

Collin Freeman

The commander who came onto the ship with the Bynars I actually quite liked. You really do expect him to be the villain, but ends up just being some normal officer. A red-shirt herring if you will.

Ca$hWednesday

Guys. I translated the msg msg from @Gregory. It was binary encoded 8-bit ASCII: "It’s all about Minuet, she is the key" Here's the binary in text form. I loved Season 1 when it came out. Sure it has aged a bit but I’ve rewatched so much of S1 over the years. A couple of clunkers but overall good - great

Jon1701

I'd think the holodeck would partition the occupants into multiple groups once they're far enough apart in the simulated world, and show different images to each subgroup just as if they were in completely different holodecks.

Jeff Cornell

So this is where i disagree, i honestly think the series starts to pick up in the second season we have a few episodes that are really good i am not gonna name them to avoid spoilers and again in season 3 we have a few really good episodes and the rest are decent. maybe my opinion on this series is a bit skewed because i grew up watching reruns with my dad ( i was born in 89 so i got the later seasons) honestly though i cant wait for these guys to check out the rest of TNG i really want them to get to DS9 and Voyager as saw both of those series from beginning to end when they aired lol.

Yes, but the group also can't move away from each other either. That was my point.

Numinous2019

The main problem with season 1 is that there is not yet any real reason for TNG to exist, besides Star Trek being an existing successful franchise. There are no compelling characters yet. No compelling stories. No compelling overall situation for the 24th Century Starfleet to deal with. Basically TNG was launched to expand ST, not because Roddenberry had a strong enough concept to introduce. Objectively it is not good, largely due to Roddenberry (and his lawyer apparently) rewriting most of the first half scripts, production issues and an overall blandness. If feels very much an '80's show and it takes until the second half of season 3 to consolidate what works and to minimise what doesn't.

Numinous2019

About what you were saying at the end, rewatching now I don’t think it’s that season 1 is bad, it’s just that the show gets better.

Paul Rymer

Great reaction video. Not sure if you’ve filmed your YouTube intro or not but in case you haven’t, might I suggest you: -toss the dialogue back and -forth mid sentence so it seems -like you’re both talking -like you’re Bynars

Stuart Arbury

In Marvel comics when they would do a line-wide event (Secret Wars, Infinity Gauntlet, Crusade and so on) the first two characters that would get written out or separated from all the heroes would always be Dr Strange and Reed Richards: too powerful and too smart for any problem. That is what Troi's problem is, and she was a poorly thought out character who apparently can only be seen if she is useless to solving the problem. Outside of her mother's episode she hasn't really had a purpose requiring telepathy or empathy--her whole shtick as a character.

Ken R

Thanks guys! I haven't seen this episode in years and it was better than I remember. I really enjoyed it.

Gary Leyh

That was 100% bottle episode. Very few guest stars, no planet shots, alien vessel shots, they already had the outpost from the movies in the can-a money saving episode that needed so much filler the Steadicam guy was wondering the halls. Weak on substance but interesting concept.

Badger

My Gene-BS detector is going off a little bit on that one, he might have thought so after the fact (or he was just smooth-talking Wil) but Wesley was originally going to be Leslie.

JD Nevesytrof

And the SNL parody of that was one of the few funny things on that show in this century.

Jovet

I was born in the mid-70s. TOS never really appealed to me because it appeared overacted, melodramatic, and cheesy with a palette of 7 colors only allowed on set. But as I've gotten older I have learned to appreciate it for its time. I thought TNG was marvelous (but not perfect) from the start and I think it has mostly aged very well. I am really excited for these two guys to experience all of it.

Jovet

Gene literally told Wheaton that he saw himself as Wesley.

Andreas Schmitt

And the person who was looking on at the Enterprise in shock in Star Trek III was none other than Grace Lee Whitney, making her cameo as TOS crew member Janice Rand. Her hair may have been different, but her intense glare remains the same! I remember Rand so well from the original series, and it surprised me to find that she was in only 8 TOS episodes, and that she'd made cameos in seven Star Trek productions afterwards! She was in the movies and fan films almost as much as she was in the series.

Ian Westcott

Thank you !!! Im glad im not the only one who has been thinking that

Derek Orr

I dont think Wesley was Gene inserting himself. Gene more likely saw himself as Riker.

Derek Orr

I forgot about the holodeck part of this episode (which is why I think people like it). Judging based solely off of this episode and what we've seen thus far in season one, this is half of an episode with two full episodes squished into it. I like it better than I remember (and there are far worse episodes to come in future seasons), but I still don't think this is a good episode based on what we see here and so far in season one. Riker gets smitten way too fast, or much more time has passed inside the holodeck than outside (it seems the latter is more likely, with them cutting out extra scenes with Riker and Minuet and they just screwed up syncing everything). The Binar story is cliche and dumb, as is the race itself. A race that lives on a planet called Binus just happens to evolve into beings tied to a computer and always working in pairs (or did they change the name of their race and planet after this, and change it to something derived from English?) Also, four minutes was way too short of a time to evacuate the Enterprise. People would have barely had time to line up at the transporters.

Nerd's Gold

That's true, and I didn't mean to imply you both should sit in silence. Incidental reactions are good. Ongoing discussion over dialog should be avoided. I don't want you guys to miss anything! Especially when you talk about or ask things that were in earlier exposition. TNG and Star Trek in general are not "blink and you'll miss something" types of entertainment, but there are lots of little moments still. Definitely enjoying the journey with you two!

Jovet

Kirk and the Enterprise with serious battle damage.

Nerd's Gold

“I’m Just a Bill” is a banger

Josh (Target Audience)

Yeah but when you’re watching things for the first time you aren’t recording yourself for other’s entertainment. We aren’t going to sit in silence, we are making a video.

Josh (Target Audience)

They have dozens of regular and cargo transporters as well as docking ports

Derek Orr

Not liking TOS as TNG fan and vice versa is also a generational thing. You have to consider that there were 20 years between them. I grew up with reruns of TOS in the 70ies and was very sceptical of TNG in the beginning. Therefore I didn't watch it from the start. On the other hand some younger TNG fans in this time found the costumes, sets and props of TOS ridiculously outdated. So they didn't watch it. I believe the desire to watch everything Trek like you now came much later when there was more than just two shows and a couple of movies. The same generation issues occured with Star Wars. Many older fans of the original triology didn't like the prequels at all when they came out. For millenials who grew up with them the prequels plus Clone Wars are peak SW.

Sam Langanke

The awe inspiring looks from stat trek 3 was because it was Kirk and the Enterprise, not just any ship. Ships in spacedock was just as routine 75 years ago…but the enterprise and Kirk are absolute legends …they changed the uniform insignia for all starfleet to honour kirks 5 year mission

Derek Orr

I definitely think you need to react to them right after you're done watching. I'm still concerned you're talking too much during them and you're missing important exposition or plot. I am probably weird, but when I watch things like this for the first time, I just sit back and take it all in. I don't over think it, I don't think about "ooos" and "ahhhs," and I don't let myself think toooo far ahead. I'll think about all of it once it's done.

Jovet

The thing with Wesley is that he isn't a bad character and not annoying when he's used right, but when he was annoying it was like the writers pulled several all nighters to make sure he was REALLY annoying. Now that they made him an officer in training (more or less) and he actually has a reason to be on the bridge, in engineering etc. he's already much less of nuisance.

Phillip Grischa

Confirmed, he did 🤣

Andreas Schmitt

I looked up the piano player and he was Jack Sheldon. Jack would have been known to many of TNG’s early fans as a singer of Schoolhouse Rock songs, including “Conjunction Junction” and “I’m Just a Bill.”

James H

No insult to Gene, as he laid the foundation for this great universe. But there was lots of great Trek stories since he has been gone. I feel like in some ways he held TNG back somewhat but I only think it's because TV storytelling changed over the years. But there's plenty of later Trek I don't like either.

Joe Concepts

Did you guys catch the tie-in from a previous episode? At the end of "Datalore", Picard says "and we're overdue for our computer refit."

Crush

Betazoids are telepathic. The ability to read actual thoughts and project their own thoughts. Deanna is empathic,, she can sense the emotional state of others. In very, very few examples is she able to connect as a telepath. Riker is one example. Now Betazoids can't read all minds. Some are so alien that their abilities don't work.

Mark Wood

Fun fact - Jonathan Frakes does actually play the trombone! When he was a student at Penn State he played trombone in the marching band.

Cameron Thacker

It's a fairly common belief that this series in its early seasons wasn't good (there are some that loved these two seasons, some who think TNG went down after that, but I never got the feeling that reflected the average view, just as there saw those that thought the show was actually bad, virus just not being good, I am in that group). This was a belief while it was airing, so this wasn't a post series view comparing it to what comes later. Now that doesn't mean that various episodes weren't liked, but as a whole (and certainly moments that really worked). As someone who watched Trek when it come out TNG really didn't feel like good tv for its time. TOS first two seasons seemed good versus the other shows that were airing in mid/late 1960. TNG felt more middle of the road for programming of 87-88. And for myself it played really flat. Now this episode of one of 5 of the 26 episodes that I actually liked this season.

Mark Wood

I wouldn't say the first two season are bad, they just don't hit the highs of some of the later seasons. When I think back to my favorite episodes, almost none of them are in these first seasons. I would say the same about DS9. Both found their footing around season 3 and told some amazing stories, but it is with the earlier seasons and character building that lets you appreciate them more.

DustmanNorochj

1:02:54 I can explain this. Full Betazoids can read the thoughts of most species. Lwaxana seems to be especially gifted in that regard, for her species. Some species cannot be empathically "read" especially other empathic species. Deanna cannot read most people's actual thoughts as she is half human, she can just sense emotions and emotional awareness. I don't consider having only Riker on the ship to reprogram the Bynars's master computer a plot hole. He could have figured it out and operated both computer consoles simultaneously pretty easily. 11001001 is also the filename of the Bynars's master computer file on the Enterprise's computer.

Jovet

I think Star Trek had always succeeded not because of Gene, but in spite of him. He had the idea of "Wagon Train to the Stars" which was enough to get it going, but virtually everything else that made Star Trek great was created by others which Gene then loudly and permanently took credit for.

JD Nevesytrof

29:45 I was JUST going to ask if you had figured out whose voice that is! :D

Jovet

Yea your right about that. But you get my meaning tho.

Toysruskiddd

I still say the Star Trek franchise went steeply downhill (and has since died) since Gene died.

Jovet

Just keep in mind that humans have more than 5 senses. The whole "5 senses!" thing is an antiquated over-simplifaction likely originally aimed at children.

Jovet

Also, totally called it on the discord that you'd think Quinteros was the Evil Goatee Picard!

JD Nevesytrof

Alex made me realize something that makes the early show feel a little iffy to me...it's not as great when they stop the show cold to show the crew being amazed and wondrous at something new, whether it's a ship pulling into spacedock or a new weird cosmic phenomenon...Star Trek works best when everyone acts professional and competent, even if they're facing something bizarre.

JD Nevesytrof

Counselor Troi and Betazeds do not have powers. It’s just an addition sense than the 5 senses humans have.

Toysruskiddd

@Alex: No need to be worried about the future seasons. After Gene was no longer the show runners the writers just had a bit more freedom to tell stories that Gene just didn't want to tell. But those kinds of stories that are coming actually fill exactly what you have always wanted. You keep anticipating stuff that will appear actually, it's hilarious. So don't worry. They'll be different but I am 100% sure will absolute love them.

Andreas Schmitt

Minuet was self aware because the Binars specifically made her that way. Most characters are not self aware but there are a few that are and that’s because of the programming. The holodeck isn’t going anywhere, Spoiler Alert. LoL. But it’s great and you’ll love it.

Toysruskiddd

Let's update The Scorecard Tosha - 3 Riker - 2.11001001 Would be 3 but Captain Picard: WORST WINGMAN EVER!! Data - 1 Troi - 1

Prof Moff

The holodeck characters react the way they are programmed. Riker just wanted someone to talk to and they mention that Minuet simply adapts to whatever is being said. In Picard's program the characters were very specific to the novels they were based on, so that was more of a roleplay scenario and the characters were programmed to only act within that reference.

Andreas Schmitt

A book about TNG postulated a treadmill type of concept. Where it could seem you are walking miles in a holodeck landscape but the floor is actually moving and holographic scenery transitions into materialized objects as you move along. Of course, that means your group has to basically stay within the confines of the physical room.

Mike Rogers

The holodeck doesn't make much sense for anything beyond a single location to be created in which TNG crewmembers remain strictly within that location. If two crew walk in opposite directions, the holodeck won't be able to shape itself to their different paths. The holodeck does make a lot of sense for simulations/re-creations and investigations of very specific events/phenomenon.

Numinous2019

James Tiberius Kirk. William Thomas Riker. At least the holodeck didn't malfunction. Most of the time it doesn't.

KatWithAttitude

My favourite Season 1 episode! Looking forward to this.

John M.

Ya like jazz? Having Riker play the trombone was a brave but awesome choice.

Another in a long line of Treks that works on the casting of the female guest star..a less charismatic actress and this one could have hit the fan. As it is, it’s a series highlight.
