We love reading ALL of your takes so comment whatever and however you’d like! Just no future spoilers please. If you want your take to be read in the video, comment ONE of the following:

- A brief review (2-3 sentences) of why you like/dislike the episode

- A question for us about the episode

- A prediction of how you think we will react to a certain aspect of the episode

- A fun fact about the episode

We are watching this episode Wednesday so we won’t be reading the comments on this until then. If you have questions shoot us a message!

Comments

I still use this an a light-hearted insult sometimes.

Ca$hWednesday

Good catch.

Collin Freeman

Yes, very reminiscent of Devil in the Dark from TOS.

Collin Freeman

As a "ugly bag of mostly water" I like this episode.

Mike Rogers

You mentioned Red Letter Media before, this episode was one of the "few good episodes" that they kindof liked from Season 1. In particular, they noticed the possibly unintentional comedy in this episode where an Enterprise crew member goes into a normal situation and just.. wrecks everything that the workers there were doing. The look of "what did you DO?? Why?" on the face of the worker after Data leaves the room with the laser that fired at him, priceless.

This episode is known for one quote in it, I bet you can guess which. I can't tell if I love this episode for going from a serious mystery to a quirky light-hearted episode, or if it's just aggressively average and tonally all over the place. I do like it though.

Nolan

I have no idea if you guys are interested in this sort of thing, but there is a guy who takes the outtakes included with the DVDs, cleans them up, and edits them (mostly) seamlessly into the episode context. Again, don't know if you are interested in reacting to that sort of thing, I could post them in the patron takes, or I could just post them in the comments for the final video for the amusement of comment readers. Here's the intake for this episode, 1x18, Home Soil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dDv6O5RJVnU (Unfortunately, the Season 1 blooper reel isn't as high quality as the others)

This one was is very much in the Trek mantra, "Search for New Life Forms" Mission statement. I think this one will entertain you guys and keep you thinking, at least for a few minutes. You might even like it a lot! That Crystal Prop at the end representing the Alien Life form is one Cool TNG Prop I'd love to have! I'd trade my 3 or 4 TNG Scripts for it! That's it! 😀🖖

Because of this dang episode - I started calling people "ugly bags of mostly water" and it really cut into my dating and sex life..Cursed! Interesting fact: This was the final episode of the series on which Gene Roddenberry acted as head writer.

Badger

Picard being able to negotiate on the level of Kirk.. but without having to convince these kind of life forms to destroy itself

TalynStarburst

Once again this is the best episode to this point I particularly like the crest fallen you broke my G I Joe look that the Laser Engineer has after Data makes short order mincemeat of his Laser Drill, and the panic everyone has underestimating Data’s survival skills I also loved the exploration of the definition of Life. Dr. Crusher is given more room to shine in this episode and those were always my favorite character development stories

Thicketdweller

Oh god This Episode (I mean that much more up beat than ep17). I really like this one. Tough to buy a lot of it, but, it is hard to dismiss it too. Of all the weird odd intelligent life in TNG, this may be my favorite version.

Prof Moff

She's about the only reason I would ever get an Alexa.

tyranusfan

I loved the alien in this one! Not an actor in a suit, a legit non-human life form. Something TOS might have done if they’d had more money. I don’t know why the terraformers were all jerks and weirdos, though.

tyranusfan

This is one of the first really great episodes with an interesting concept. It is reminiscent of "Devil in the Dark". Yet again humans are working on a planet, not realizing they are harming indigenous life. I bet this one will end up in your top 5.

Andreas Schmitt

Rod Roddenberry said that Majel recorded enough words and phrases before her death to make an AI voice. I personally would love my Alexa with Majel’s TNG computer voice. Imagine she gets to the last ingredient in a recipe and is like “And now the conclusion” 😃

Glenn Johnson Barnes

Terraforming, without a Genesis Device? Impossible for bags of mostly water!!

Gregory

I love Majel Barrett's delivery of the monosyllable "Life" in the computer's conversation with Dr. Crusher. It's a prime example of how Barrett's contribution to the Star Trek franchise as the computer voice is much more important than people may realize.

Anthony Bernacchi

This episode was not included in the UK rental VHS tape series that came out in 1988, so I didn’t see this episode. I didn’t get to see it after that for some reason. So, in 2023 I saw it for the first time. It really reminded me of Devil In The Dark.

Paul Rymer

Fellow James Bond fans will instantly recognize Kurt Mandl's actor is also the actor who portrayed KGB General Gogol, an ongoing character from many of those films. Other than that fun fact, I feel like this is one of the stronger S1 episodes.

Ca$hWednesday

The Enterprise shows up somewhere and completely destroys these peoples way of life. "Ugly giant bags of mostly water." is one of the hammiest-fistedest ways to try and come up with an alien-centric insult I have ever heard. Yet, I can't help but like it. One of the stronger TNG episodes from Season One.

Steven Johnson

This is one of my favorite episodes of the 1st season. The casting of Walter Gotell from the Janes Bond franchise was brilliant. I thought the environmental theme was subtle and intriguing. I found it to be very well written. Some episodes just hit you right and this one works for me!

Gary Leyh

Another of my personal favorites from Season 1. For some reason, I’ve always found Picard’s log entry to close the episode to be a bit haunting. I’m surprised they didn’t do that more often.

The Game Show Reviewer

I always liked this one. It's usually (but not always) interesting when they discover new life forms. I'm not sure if "Ugly Giant Bags of Mostly Water" is intended as an insult or an observation. Probably the latter.
