The writers' strike happened between season one and two. It was the reason season two has only 22 episodes instead of 26.

Dan Krantz

Agreed

Collin Freeman

I can imagine thousands of benefits from AI but can imagine just as many hinders. Since you’re so confident, dweller, I was wondering if you can name a few negatives to AI that can come to mind.

PIG

I can envision at least one of you guys going "Oh no..." a lot. But I thought it was okay, not the best. The working of kids into the stories was always an uneasy mix and in future seasons (with some notable exceptions) kids on the Enterprise are pretty much somewhat seen and not heard. I get a chuckle now watching it, being reminded of the ozone layer hysteria.

Mike Rogers

Part of the reason why Wesley got some fan hate was overuse. There were too many Wesley-centric stories early in the series. I'd heard that sometimes that each writer wrote a Wesley-centric script with the intention of filming just a couple of the best, but that when the writers' strike hit, a number of these discarded scripts were shoved into production. I can't substantiate that, and given the timing of the various Wesley episodes, that explanation doesn't make sense to me.

Ian Westcott

Whoa whoa, this isn't the channel for such slander against Space Mountain! (Though really, whenever they reskin Space Mountain with a holiday theme, it sucks)

Ian Westcott

I don't think TNG had writers (with very few exceptions) who knew how to write believable children's dialogue, and most of the super-young actors couldn't act.

Ian Westcott

Wesley was better used when he had to carry some dramatic weight, instead of being the brash boy genius. This also suited Wheaton as an actor better, as he was more relatable the more 'burden' he had to carry and the more subdued he became as a result.

Numinous2019

This one is near the bottom in my list of episodes. The kind I probably wouldn't watch again, and if I did I'd say "Oh ok now I remember why this one sucked." Kind of like my reaction every time I ride Space Mountain.

David Scudder

Calculus that young. This series is really pushing the idea that humanity has advanced over the next 300 years. Though it does play into that idea that parents will constantly be baffled by their kids homework because of knowledge naturally progressing over time. I predict this episode being so kid oriented will make you guys wary. We all remember Charlie X and The Children Shall Lead. *shudder*

Nolan

This is one of the dumber episodes of the season. The aliens cannot have children anymore so their solution is to kidnap seven children? How's that going to help? Had they kept the children in a few generations the entire planets population would consist of 20 inbred humans at best.

Phillip Grischa

Ok, here's my take on this one...it was Sloow. But I did like the concept. Well the concept of the people not able to have kids anymore. Not the Ozone holes the being reason for the condition, of course this was right after the 60s an 70s hysteria about the next Ice Age coming. This was in the early Global Warming or what is now called Climate Change hysteria. Nice change of terms since Climate is never Constant! Anyway I think this just might be one you guys are not fond of. I'll put it this way, you will probably like this one the least of all the Children centered Eps. of Trek so far. My question is, "Did you like the last 10 minutes the best?" LOL I did....That's it! 😐🖖

Duane Chancey

"Hail, hail, fire and snow. Call the angel we will go. Far away, for to see. Friendly Angel, come to me." wrong kids episode.. meh.

Badger

7 kids to repopulate the whole planet? Yikes! 😳

TalynStarburst

The Character of Radue is. Played by Jerry Hardin in the first of 3 roles he will carry within the Star Trek universe Though he is more recognizable ass Deep Throat from the X-files I loved he as the shocked lawyer from Big Trouble in Little China He actually carry the sub plot single handedly

Thicketdweller

I am not concerned for one billionth of a second about Artificial Intelligence, I am terrified of natural stupidity.

Thicketdweller

Nice Wesley episode, and a good reason NOT to have children on a starship. Two of the kids were Wil Wheaton's siblings. The giant glowing shield generator was a miniature, with the people filmed in the distance on stage.

tyranusfan

oh god this episode.

Prof Moff

Another Wesley episode. While not my favorite, I still like the concept and the dilemma the planet is facing. Yet again Dr. Beverly is under stress of losing her son. I think you, Josh, will probably like it for that reason alone :D Alex, you will probably groan at the start of the episode when it becomes clear this is a children episode. I personally appreciate the relationship of the boy, who wants to become an artist, and his father.

Andreas Schmitt

Star Trek and kids don’t mix..and the franchise never really learns that lesson

Glenn Johnson Barnes

Often when I see this episode I picture someone going up to Gene and saying we need a cost cutting episode in here or we won't make it to the end of the season. Gene thinks for a moment and says "we'll do a show with a bunch of kids! We can use the children of the cast and crew and we won't have to pay them anything." The other person says "We can't do that. We did that last time with "Miri."' Gene says "Hold my joint" and sits down at the typewriter.

Dan Krantz

Picard, okay take two, this your chance to get rid of the Wesley boy. NO!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!

Gregory

Fun facts: It was challenging to get the child actors to focus because this episode was filmed just before Christmas. This is the third Star Trek episode with a title derived from a nursery rhyme, after "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" and "Friday's Child" (the fourth if you count "Mirror, Mirror").

Anthony Bernacchi

This episode was made in 1987, long before the debate about AI’s incredible benefits and corrosive nature on mankind today. In your thoughts, how do you think we should prepare for AI in the most positive, or Star Trek-ian, way after watching this episode?

PIG

The lead guest actress is recognisable from Desperate Housewives. It’s not the last time one of that cast will appear in TNG :-)

Paul Rymer

Not as painful as the TOS outings with kids. It's mostly just disposable. I think we're now into the territory of this season that things start to begin a major period of vacillation in quality. Some episodes are great, some are downright terrible. In the ocean, I would say this is mostly in the realm of "Which one was that again?"

Steven Johnson

I predict our Target Viewers (Alex and Josh) will LOVE this one! It’s got kids, so it’s gotta be good! Fun fact: several of the visual effects shots were being made for this episode during the Reading Rainbow episode that featured TNG!

The Game Show Reviewer

There are better kiddie episodes, but this is nowhere near the depths of "And the Children Shall Lead". Thank God.
