EARLY ACCESS - The Big Goodbye | First Time Watching Star Trek TNG (S1E12)

Yes, but you have to remember that the actual episode plots revolve around nothing being able to exist outside of the holodeck (as repeatedly stated by characters in those episodes). This is an example of the sort of writing that would plague TNG. Episodes where the logic is loose and therefore the tension and stakes never really hit home sufficiently. You can go along for the ride, but the story telling too often starts collapsing in on itself.

It's also stated that it works along the lines of the transporter/replicator so it's not impossible that while people and settings are simulated it can create objects that could pass beyond the holodeck...could just vary by program/settings etc.

For example, objects thrown through the holodeck access door do not immediately (or even slowly) dematerialise. Crew members carry paper and other important clues/plot devices out of the holodeck. These episodes have plots that revolve entirely around the fact that no hologram can exit the holodeck.

This is a dry run for a second season episode, which leads into a sixth season episode. The rules around how the holodeck operates are always muddled. Crew members bring objects off the holodeck (throughout the show's run), while dialogue repeatedly states nothing generated within can exist outside of it.

I now remember that there's a story about how Lawrence Tierney sort of traumatized Wil Wheaton during this episode. You can look up the story. About three years later, Lawrence Tierney also played Elaine’s dad on Seinfeld, but he was written off the show as apparently Tierney was known to have a twisted sense of humor, and after he stole a knife from the set, things spiralled downhill from there.

So what would you do in a holodeck? Within reason. I'm not really sure what I would do, though I have some ideas.

KatWithAttitude

Yeah, I'd never leave.

I know i would have a really bad holodeck addition if it was real.

Edweirdo

The holodeck is completely safe! It'll never be a problem!
