Yeah Anthony I figured Paul meant that, just was not sure. For me I grew up on the shows that were at least 24 Eps a Season. I hardly watch T.V. now, the last Show I watched every time it was on was Walking Dead even though I am No fan of CGI or the 8 Ep 1st season schedule followed by 2 half seasons of 5 or 6 Eps they call 2 seasons....that is barely half a season. LOL Maybe if they did more Practical Effects they could do more Eps. a season. 🤔🖖

My comment was comparing this with The Deadly Years and I think this one is not as good.. Now my opinion is...the best aging story of Trek was TAS Ep. The Lorelei signal.

Duane Chancey

Sub Rosa sucks, but at least it's good for a laugh.

A "meh" episode, it also seems a bit out of place for the series. Can't pin down why. I remember being impressed with the first, oldest, old age makeup. I liked how it concentrated on bone structure instead of wrinkles. It is the progressive de-aging makeups that fall short. And in 2023 HD, they all don't stand up (which is understandable). The underpinning of this episode is exploring what makes terrorists, terrorists. I think it falls flat on that too.

Mike Rogers

That would have been very interesting. However, Kirk/Shatner appearing in season 1 would have over-shadowed the TNG cast and could have led to accusations of a lack of confidence in the new show on its own terms. Also, there would have been major blow-back in presenting Kirk in such a compromised light. So, Roddenberry (I think) made the correct call.

'Masks', 'Sub Rosa', 'Shades of Gray', 'Samaritan Snare', ........I'm not arguing with you about this episode on its own merits, but there are even worse and almost(?) unwatchable episodes to come.

Numinous2019

If I recall correctly, this is the one where Governor Karnas was originally conceived to be Tyree and Admiral Jameson was an elderly Admiral Kirk. It was originally thought to be a direct sequel to "A Private Little War" until Gene shot that down because it didn't want to have much in the way of direct TOS sequels on TNG...not that it stopped "The Naked Now" from being made apparently. Whether or not this is correct I can't verify, but I could definitely see it being the case. Oh, and the background during the shoot out in the tunnels behind the soldiers is the tunnel from "Spaceball One"!

“ not as good as the deadly years.” wow. It must really suck then.

Rich Cirivilleri

I always thought this episode would end with the admiral leading the crew to the famous Seven Cities of Gold, after all Jamison found the fountain of youth It seemed ambitious and maybe even a good idea but for execution, sometimes good ideas only look good on paper. Probably my least favorite of season 1 Don’t have to say it, but I”m gonna, Very Bad Make-up I think this will be your first real speed bump on the TNG road

Thicketdweller

I thought this episode was a ripoff of the original series episode The Deadly Years, but since you hated that episode perhaps you will actually like this one more.

Chtphr Rrr

That’s what I meant, no disrespect to the TNG cast and production team intended at all - but they had such a tough schedule to meet that it’s understandable that not all of the episodes are perfect. As with all TNG so far I’m enjoying the rewatch if not for the main plot just the subtle world building that’s done in this season.

Paul Rymer

I think Paul meant that the need to make 26 episodes a year in the days of TNG meant that TV shows ended up with weak episodes as filler. "Too Short A Season" is one of a tiny handful of TNG episodes that I tend to forget exists, even though I've seen it in the past. I think it's a combination of the episodes being unmemorable and my not having seen them as often as some of the others.

Anthony Bernacchi

Marsha Hunt (Annie Jameson), who passed away last year, lived to be 104. Believe it or not, an actor who appears in a later Star Trek episode lived to be even older.

Anthony Bernacchi

Leonard Maizlish, Gene Roddenberry's attorney, attempted to insert his own rewrites into this episode and "The Last Outpost," which was illegal because he wasn't in the Writers Guild. One of the changes Maizlish tried to make was adding a scene with Wesley, who is absent from the finished episode.

Anthony Bernacchi

I knew right away that this was a de-aging episode the minute the admiral popped up on screen.. flashbacks to The Deadly Years with the bad makeup and overacting

TalynStarburst

Too long a Season....how do you mean?

Duane Chancey

I couldn’t remember ever watching this when I came to rewatch it. Too Long A Season led to filler like this?

Paul Rymer

Well this one was not as good as The Deadly Years.. to me at least. I thought the ending was the best part and a bit sad. I think it's 50/50 on whether you will like it. Also 50/50 if you recognize M Pataki. This one Ranks in my book as right where it is in the Broadcast Order 16 of 16. However I'm not saying it was bad, just my least fav. so far. The Phaser battle was cool though! My Question for you is, "Are you tired of the Aging stories in Trek yet? That's it! 😀🖖

Duane Chancey

I guess Jameson started a private little war...

James Bottas

Congratulations boys, you've just made it through the worst episode of the season, or possibly even the series for that matter. Between the terrible aging makeup, the extreme overacting and the ridiculous plot, this one comes off as a complete dud. The remaining six and a half seasons have a few clunkers here and there, even a few stinkers, but nothing as bad as this steaming turd.

Dan Krantz

A more classic dilemma and the start of the TNG era shady Admirals, more pips almost always means trouble.

Gregory

The actor playing Governor Karnas played the Klingon officer in TOS who got into a fight with Scotty in The Trouble with Tribbles. To me, the actress playing Admiral Jameson’s wife sells the story. You feel for her more than for him.

tyranusfan

I think this one was just okay. But Jameson has that weird, rough old person voice / sort of English accent that apparently actors and directors think the elderly have. My parents are both over 80 years old and I'm waiting for them to start talking like that.

Joe Concepts

My least favorite episode of season 1. The bad makeup does not even trouble me. But the "Admiral" doesn't carry himself like a military man. He walks around like Fonzie, it looks ridiculous.

Andreas Schmitt

This is definitely one of the episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation. "I think this might be what you call a """mixed bag,""" Jay." - Mike

Steven Johnson

Another guilty pleasure. Yeah, the aging makeup was bad but I kind of got caught up in the love story between Jameson and his wife.

KatWithAttitude

If you ignore the makeup, the actual episode is pretty interesting. Someone else probably knows more, but for some reason I remember this as being the episode D.C. Fontana filed a grievance with the writers guild over (being rewritten) Again, I may be wrong.

Glenn Johnson Barnes

I think the writers watched the animated series and hoped no one would notice.

Nerd's Gold

Mostly remembered for bad makeup and the casting of Michael Pataki as Karnas, who also played Korax, the klingon who called the Enterprise a garbage skow, starting the brawl in The Trouble with Tribbles

Mark Chrisco

The ham-off at the end between Jameson and Karnas is fun to watch, although they did manage to keep the plot from going too off the rails and there is some real emotional weight to Jameson's search for redemption.

JD Nevesytrof

Have you ever tried putting on makeup to make yourself look so old so that you can later put on makeup to make yourself look not as old so that you can later.....etc.? I imagine the makeup team had the same reaction as you

Elway Simpson

To quote Joey from Friends showing off his acting range: "I'm old." An episode mostly about a guest star who's abilities sadly can't carry the plot revolving around him.
