UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TNG S1E11 - Haven

UNCUT REACTION - Star Trek TNG S1E11 - Haven

Comments

I'm pretty much with Alex on this one. It's alright, but not terribly interesting. You pretty much know right away this wedding won't pan out. Main character and all. Lwaxana Troi can be a lot to handle. Majel is great in the role, but the character is best appreciated in small doses. She's entertaining, but if she showed up every other episode she's get annoying fast. Some people even find her too much as is. Loved when Data asked her to "please continue the petty bickering"😂. Also Mr. Homm is certainly a memorable character. The story with Haven and the Tarellians is ok, but nothing special. Picard saying "they must not be permitted them to destroy us" is a good hook to let us know this is a serious situation. OTOH, there's no time to really get us invested in Wyatt or the planet or these aliens. They're all just there. Obviously this is very much a Troi episode, and they clearly wanted to find something for her to do beyond just "sensing" the obvious. Unfortunately what they came up with just wasn't that interesting. At least we did learn something about Betazoid culture and Troi's background. I really hated the whole "I should have knows, you humans" speech. Like FFS, you've known Riker is human for years, you're set to marry a human, your father was human. Enough with the patronising bullshit. You're marrying this guy you barely know, and Riker is being decent enough to stay out of the way, and you're complaining why? Yeah, pretty meh.

Timothy Nikiforovs

You many know this as well, but in case you don't. Prior to her death she recorded an entire library phonetic sounds and words so that Star Trek could continue to use her voice for the computer as long as they wanted, and was used in JJ Abrams 2009 Star Trek, 1 year after her death.

A Surprisingly Moist Fart

Yes, because who would ever consider someone alone in their room watching an electronic medium depicting entertainers.

A Surprisingly Moist Fart

Majel will be doing the voice of the Enterprise computer for most of the series, so she'll never be too far away.

Mel Primus

And, since they did watch Buffy season 1, he also played Principal Snyder, who replaced Mr. Flutie after the hyena kids ate him up. lol

TheBlowpop

Re scanning older shows in high definition is a bit of a mixed bag. It's great to see them in much higher resolution, but the people who shot them did so with 19" cathode ray TV sets with a 480i resolution in mind. So things like the plastic forks and construction paper taped to the back panels on the bridge to cut out light reflections weren't worried about because though they would show up quite well on the 35mm film, they would simply go unnoticed on standard def TV. Lost in Space is another example. Those sand dunes and mesas that look miles away in standard def look like what they actually are in high def - a painted backdrop ten feet behind the actors.

Dan Krantz

the High Definition-ifying of TNG was great for the little reasons like this. The plastic forks work pair well with the black construction paper on the panels in the bridge.

Ca$hWednesday

They're watching it in Hi-Def. In the original 480i broadcast you could hardly tell they were forks, let alone plastic.

Dan Krantz

Leave it to you guys to notice a detail that I have overlooked for 30 years. #plasticforks But if you do look closer, it looks like the art dept. Painted lines on them

Mike Rogers

I wonder why people feel the need to go "THIS IS THE WORST EPISODE EVER" on basically every episode when they subscribe literally to get someone else's opinion.

JD Nevesytrof

Totally agree

Collin Freeman

In fact, enough people were comparing Troi to Spock at the time that Marina Sirtis felt compelled to tell an interviewer, "Some of Troi's character traits may be similar to his but Troi is *not* a Spock clone. She is a completely new character."

Anthony Bernacchi

Marina has really light brown eyes.

Michael Nemo

Besides the introduction of Majel as Troi's mom, this has gotta be one of the worst eps of TNG.

Michael Mannisto

This might be my favorite one so far because it had a little comedy, a little romance, and a little problem. Its just a nice little story not beset by Ferengi or drama drained of all tension. One thing I don't understand and I don't recall it being explained, but how did the Space Lepers know of Wyatt and how did she get in his dreams? Going to disagree about a dark ending would have been better. Happy endings I feel tie it up in a nice bow and gives it a satisfying conclusion. Tragic endings work for romance but this wasn't really romantic with regard to Troi and Wyatt. Now had Troi actually fallen in love, killing Wyatt would be a good ending.

Ken R

Star Trek doesn’t do dark you’ll get plenty in new trek

Scarpad’s Domain

While I agree that this was a so so episode, it's part of the building of the show and characters. It's not one I'd normally watch again.

Monty Crawford

I KNEW I recognized him from somewhere!! Thanks!

Monty Crawford

Wow, I had no idea the Miller father was the same actor as the STIV president. He looks much better with the beard. 😄

Tom Occhipinti

YES! New episode! My body is ready.

StonyD

Majel Barrett and Gene Roddenberry got married in a Japanese Shinto ceremony after the original TOS was cancelled. They remained married until Gene's death in 1991.

Collin Freeman

I like Alex's idea for the ending better, too. If the Tarellians had been the TNG version of the Reavers, that would've kicked this episode up to notches unknown (almost a Twilight Zone surprise ending).

Collin Freeman

Yes, all actors portraying Betazoids on 'Trek wore black contact lenses.

Rhett Coates

SEeing anyone from TOS in subsequent shows was a treat. First, DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy in the pilot, and now Chapel - but with Majel in a different role. The actors became as beloved as the characters they played, so seeing Majel was a JOY for us .... for all the fans I know of.

Rhett Coates

Many of the 'Trek fans who witnessed HAVEN in its first run, myself included, LOVED that Majel was in the series - and you will both, I suspect, like where many guest characters arcs go during the 7-year run of the show. I won't spoil any of that for you, other than to simply say you are both in for tremendous surprises, both in characters (and where the writers take them), and the wide, WIDE variety of genres which the many episodes use with the Star Trek sci-fi context. It's astonishing, and many great surprises coming your way. Seven years of episodes is a lot, and EVERY main character will have multiple stories, and some with story ARCS, all about them during the 7-year run.

Rhett Coates

Ok, well I'm glad you guys liked it. Looks like the Awful Eps. must be to come huh! I'm pretty sure it won't be either one of the next 2 Eps. 😁🖖

Duane Chancey

Well, my little joke about Lwaxana and the Ferengi being held in the same regard by the fans didn't exactly work since you swerved from the fandom again, lol. Shame about not being able to avoid the episode titles... there's a doozy of one you'll get to eventually. And Star Trek LOVES to reuse actors in different roles. Granted, most time you probably won't notice since they're under different alien make-ups, but we'll see. Lotta times they'll have an actor in a bit part, be impressed with them, then remember them when casting for a larger role. And then you;ll have a few times where an actor will play a role that is acknowledged to look like the other character. And even once, an actor playing two distinct, separate roles in the same episode. But I bet you wouldn't notice it.

Nolan

yes we did this when I was in high school and I have yet to grow up

Prof Moff

Knockin Boots or/ maybe chawowoww off screen count. The score card of characters who did or maybe uptaooptaed: Tosha - 3 Naked now, Code of Honor, Justice Riker - 1 Justice Data - 1 Naked Now Troi - 1 Haven Jordy - maybe Justice

Prof Moff

This is why I sort of think Lwaxana created the psychic connection between Wyatt and Ariana. She finds herself in a situation where she has to negotiate an arranged marriage for her child Deanna, doesn't want that marriage to actually end up happening, and so creates the psychic connection between the little boy Wyatt and a different girl. Memory Alpha (the Star Trek wiki) says of betazoids: "The common psionic abilities of Betazoids extended from sensing thoughts and/or emotions, over projecting thoughts and/or emotions, to manipulating the minds of others." So she shows no surprise at the Wyatt/Ariana connection, seems to almost even give Wyatt a "go get Ariana" nudge, and never loses her smile the entire time the marriage is basically dissolving. I think explaining all this is what they had no time for but it seems like obvious subtext to me. (hope no one minds a bit of elaboration on betazoid ability from the wiki)

James Bottas

I feel like a lot of the bad Lwaxana feelings come more from the writing than the character or Majel’s performance. Once she’s allowed to do more than chase Picard around, she really comes into her own.

Glenn Johnson Barnes

None of this is really explained in the series. You actually have to read the books to get a lot of this back story about Betazed and the range of Deanna and Lwaxana's abilities

Katie Jackson

So with Betazoids the arranged marriages were for the most important betazoid families. Deanna's family is actually a part of the "ruling class" on her world. It's why you hear Lwaxana say she was a daughter of the fifth house(Heir to the holy rings etc.) It makes Deanna's family a bit like royalty. Definitely dignitaries. Also Deanna is only half Betazoid. That's why she is only an empath with limited telepathic abilities. Empath's only sense emotions. Telepath's can read thoughts. Her mother is considered one of the strongest Telepath's on her world.

Katie Jackson

Fun episode. I enjoy Lwaxana here. fun character, often annoying but it's on purpose. She's playing a classic kind of mom character that many people can relate to in real life and she's not deserving of the outright hate many people have for her

James Bottas

Oh, sure. They definitely would have done well to explain it more than “the universe is connected”, especially when neither of the two characters who sensed each other…are ANY of the show’s telepaths. 😆

Ragnarok

Brings up a lot of interesting questions about predestination that I wish could’ve been explored

Josh (Target Audience)

It’s not “convenient” that they’re there when Wyatt is; they went to where they knew he would be. Or, if you don’t believe that, it’s that they would always have met there, with or without the visions, and the visions simply told them about each other in advance.

Ragnarok

I didn't expect him to stop it on cultural grounds or because Troi was against it. It just seems like they showed up unannounced and 100% expected that they could have a wedding on the Enterprise without having it planned in advance. It doesn't seem like Troi invited anyone or even told them the ship was coming to Haven. It's almost like a scene or two were missing.

Joe Concepts

You will be learning more about the regular characters. They all have episodes where they are the "A" plot. Not really a spoiler because it's a logical development with an ensemble cast. Some secondary characters will also have their own episode or episodes. And as you guessed, Lwaxana will be back multiple times.

KatWithAttitude

Fun fact, in season 1 the observation lounge was a redress of sickbay, that's why sickbay has the recognizable obersavtion lounge windows covered with carpet above the beds. They build an actual observation lunge set for season 2 at which point they also changed the sickbay wall.

Phillip Grischa

This was the last episode of the first season before there were reruns. Around the end of December, when this would have been repeated, a text display was shown at the top of the screen during the commercial for next week’s exciting episode. That was customary during this series. There would be a trailer for next episode. You’d see a montage of clips with a voiceover talking about it.

Geoffrey Linehan

Because it's their culture and Captain Picard cannot interfere in that, even if he wanted to. Especially since Deanna never says that she doesn't want to go through with it after all.

Andreas Schmitt

Notice this show and the original series both have had extremely tall actors who played Lurch in The Addams Family. The Miller father had played the Federation president in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. I had been debating whether to send a message before you saw this episode to say that this reminds me of Amok Time.

Geoffrey Linehan

The "ready room" is Picard's small office to the left of the main screen on the bridge. The "observation lounge" is the conference room where everybody sits on that large table.

Andreas Schmitt

Wyatt was played by Robert Knepper, he later played T-Bag on Prison Break, that's why Alex might have recognized him.

Phillip Grischa

Unfortunately most (but not all!) episodes with Q have his name in the episode title. Actually a really good one with him doesn't have it in the title, so there's some surprise left for you :)

Andreas Schmitt

The actor playing Mr. Miller was previously Federation President in Star Trek IV.

tyranusfan

Betazoids (the planet is called Betazed) are not just empaths, they are fully telepathic and can read minds. Deanna Troi is an empath because she's half human, so her abilities are not as powerful, but as you saw she can communicate telepathically with other Betazoids and SOME humans she has a very close connection with.

Andreas Schmitt

Indeed, which is why Majel was called the First Lady of Star Trek.

Andreas Schmitt

Majel and Gene were married until his death. They have one son named Eugene Roddenberry Jr. who goes by Rod Roddenberry.

Dan Krantz

Exactly. It's just a matter of putting career before family plans. Nothing to do with being in Starfleet.

Andreas Schmitt

Data is definitely the obvious comparison in how he acts, but the comparison with Troi is about her being half human and half something else and seeing the relationship with that parent

Josh (Target Audience)

I'd say Data is more the "Spock character" than Troi, we just haven't gotten to explore him that much yet. Next closest would be Worf, who also is not very fleshed out at this point. They both get lots of character development as the series goes on.

THE LORE!!!

One thing I forgot before rewatching this, is, there's a lot of confusing plot points here that don't make sense. They didn't expect this engagement and wedding to even be happening on that planet, everyone just shows up and ambushes Troi. And THEN, why the hell is this all allowed to happen, unplanned, on the ship? Makes no sense.

Joe Concepts

The face on the dowry box is Armin Shimerman, who also played the main Ferengi in The Last Outpost.

tyranusfan

Captains can be married. There are Captains in this era of Star Trek that have their wife’s and children on the ships they command. As far as Riker and Troi, their relationship ended because he choose to further his career and they weren’t stationed on the same assignment. Now that they’ve reunited on the Enterprise their relationship is over although they have feelings for each other.

Toysruskiddd

The Betazed’s telepathy is not a “power”. Think of it as an extra “sense”. As in humans have 5 senses and Betazoids have 6.

Toysruskiddd

No need to over analyze it. That scene with Riker watching the little women hologram thing was just dumb.

Joe Concepts

Oh wow yeah couldn’t tell at all

Josh (Target Audience)

Marina Sirtis does wear contacts as Betazoids are supposed to have completely black irises (hence Majel Barett also wears them). In fact Sirtis once jokingly bemoaned that Brent Spiner got all the sympathy for having to wear contacts and nobody seemed to notice that she had to wear them too. Her natural eye color is a lighter shade of brown.

Dion James Pitman

There it is!

Bret Kay

and there I was wondering what I can watch after work
