Have you seen the 1963 “The Haunting” produced and directed by Robert Wise, who also directed Star Trek the motion picture and the Day the Earth stood still. You must watch this film. It follows the Shirley Jackson original story more closely, but you will see all kinds of things which Flanagan paid tribute to. He’s obviously a huge fan of the film and the novel that it’s based on. Much dialogue was lifted from the original text. Don’t bother with the crappy Liam Neeson remake. It’s only value is in comparing and contrasting it with the Robert Wise version. It’s a perfect example of brilliant versus shitty filmmaking. Five stars totally and utterly recommended. They even hugely hint at Theos lesbianism which was very daring for 1963. Watch it.
