You are still mixing "landing party" (TOS) and "away team" (TNG). ;-)

Yeah, the Ferengi were supposed to be the new big villain. Apparently they were supposed to take the place of the Klingons. That idea didn't work out well. This episode was annoying just for the Ferengi who seemed more like the Three Stooges. However, the Ferengi did have an interesting or different look, and they eventually figured out a better way to use them as they had already developed a detailed lore and history about them. For some reason, when they started mentioning the Ferengi back in 1987, I thought they meant the Kzinti from the animated series and the Star Fleet Battles board game, so I was disappointed. I feel certain that the Ferengi were developed as an answer to wild consumerism of the 1980s. The economy was booming that decade at least after around 1982. I think Gene Roddenberry believed in a more utopian culture for humans and the Federation as a society that doesn't believe in money. They mentioned that there was no money in Star Trek IV, but I think McCoy mentions credits as a type of money in Star Trek III. I like this quote -- (Gene) spent 25 minutes explaining to me all the sexual positions the Ferengi could go through. I finally said, Gene, this is a family show, on at 7:00 on Saturdays. He finally said, Okay, you're right.
