TNG is slowly moving into the direction of A-B plot story television while still maintaining being episodic

Scarpad’s Domain

Haven is possibly the worst episode of S1

Jon1701

Spoilers!

Chris S.

I heard that too! Was that on Rosenbaum’s podcast? Great interview!

Chris S.

Lets remember “no spoilers”. Trust me, Im with you. Chewing on my arm to talk points! Lol. But I guess there’d be nothing to talk about if we didn’t say SOMETHING about the episode. I try to restrain myself. I guess I’m just as guilty at times. I’m so pumped to watch with them. Although, I wish Alex and Josh would talk and laugh a bit less during the episodes. Missing some important dialogue and plot points at times. Im not sure if that bothers anyone else. I mean it out of love obviously, but it can be frustrating.

Chris S.

This was a good episode. B-

Chris S.

Yes, but maybe its a situation of getting to much power to quickly rather than slowly gaining in power/tech and learning along the way how to be responsible with it.

Tristan Rose

If you think about it, didn't they just prove Q's original premise in the pilot by showing humans can't be trusted with too much power?

Joe Concepts

Yes...she is 98 now 6 yrs. older that Bill Shatner.

Duane Chancey

Yeah, sad. Now Just June, Marta, Angela and Billy are left and I think June is almost 100.

Dan Krantz

Yes, you are of course correct about Frakes in later seasons. He has a great sense of humour and appeared relaxed behind the scenes with the other actors. It is just that in the first two seasons (especially the first) he appears ill at ease at times.

Numinous2019

Ok Dan...I read it wrong I guess. I was really saddened to find out Mark Goddard Died on the 10th this month, I found out just yesterday. ☹

Duane Chancey

I believe overall this episode is focused on the idea of "absolute power corrupts absolutely"; an idea that a persons morality decreases as their power increases. While this is shown somewhat in the way Riker interacts with the crew, I feel like its more of the problem of him giving gifts that the crew doesn't want or want to earn for themselves, making them hollow. I realize the writers wanted to make it relevant and entertaining, but I just think a Starfleet officer given omnipotent power would end war, heal incurable diseases, etc. TL:DR How do you think this could have played out if the powers had been given to a different character, such as Doctor Crusher?

Tristan Rose

The only memorable thing about this one is that Q is in it. That’s always a good thing.

Rich Cirivilleri

No, I was just commenting that this episode has the feel of what could have been a season 2 episode of LIS., no episode in particular. Actually cave of the wizards is probably my favorite episode of LIS season 2.

Dan Krantz

Frakes improves and loosens up, as does the rest of the cast. His real skill is as a director, and I believe he will freely admit that. I saw an interview with him (I think by Will Wheaton) where he talks about acting with his wife, Genie Francis, and how he struggles to memorize lines, but she can read a script and literally toss it and she’s good to go..

Glenn Johnson Barnes

Up there with the worst S1 has to offer.

Jon1701

Naw that’s ep 20

Scarpad’s Domain

I think season 1’s uptick really stars with ep20 but I’ve always liked Hide and Q. Yar was especially good in this

Scarpad’s Domain

A reasonably effective second outing for Q, with deep development for several characters in the scene where Riker offers them their hearts' desires. However, much as the TOS production team felt that featuring Spock in command on his own in "The Galileo Seven," without Kirk to play off, was a mistake, the TNG team realized that pairing Q up with Riker was a mistake, given how effective Q is opposite Picard. Question: Should Riker have saved the little girl? I predict you will be mesmerized by Patrick Stewart's fiery delivery of the speech from "Hamlet." Fun fact: Troi was in the final draft script and was only written out at the last minute. Fans have speculated that Marina Sirtis must have become unavailable unexpectedly. However, Sirtis has told an anecdote from Season 1 about a director who said to her, "You only have a couple of lines in this episode, so I told them to give you the week off and write you out," making Sirtis think, "Thanks very much, but that's residuals I won't be getting!" I suspect this may have been the episode where that happened.

Anthony Bernacchi

I’m curious how you feel about Yar’s character arc. I have heard Denise Crosby complain that she didn’t need to show up to work all they need was a set of mannequin legs to place behind Piccards head on the bridge and they would have the same effect. I disagree with her. She disliked crying in the scene with Picard, but 1 it humanized the captain 2 more Important It plays to her being a victim of trauma Her character is from “a ghetto planet where she grew up avoiding rape gangs I’m no expert but that sounds traumatic She has shown us this Doberman pincer face for 8 stories but now like all trauma victims eventually face days weeks months years decades later the moment the walls falll and the trauma is finally dealt with. I thought it was tremendous character development and Denise dismissed it. Also Troi might have been missing this week but I believe Sirtis was escorting a special guest from starfleet around the studio uhmmm. Starfleet ‘. I mean studio exec.

Thicketdweller

@Chtphr Rrr ………..who just happens to have been a real historical figure.

Ragnarok

Uhhhh, they did. They’re VICIOUS animal things. Duh. 🙄😆

Ragnarok

These first season scripts always struck me as if TNG was initially meant to be an animated show with a shorter running time. We will see some of these story elements re-appear in later seasons, but used more effectively. Also, does anyone else think Frakes seems very self-conscious when acting with Stewart? Frakes never seems to know what to do with his hands and his body language is stiff and awkward in these scenes early on.

Numinous2019

I always get a laugh at the actor cast as "Older Wesley" when you compare how Wil Wheaton looked in the 1st season to how he looks now, 35 years later.

Timothy Hennon

Probably the most TOS type of episode they've done this series in production and storyline. That planet set, those pig aliens, the presence of a god-like alien tempting humanity... Though it does have a TNG twist in how the character respond to some of this stuff. Kirk would probably not have advocated for that girl to remain dead. I guess Picard just hates kids that much, lol. More seriously though, were this TOS, I feel like Kirk would've had a big dramatic speech to the god alien and the probably would've had to hammer home to his crew to not succumb to the various temptations. Here though there's more stoicism among the crew, who are all against temptation. And whoo boy, were they off the mark with adult Wesley. Well, at least Picard didn't have to drop a rock on Riker in an open grave in order to defeat him.

Nolan

Ok...a nice interaction between Picard & Tasha. I like the last 10 minutes the best, Riker calling a meeting on the Bridge. I'm curious how you guys liked this and the last 10 min (pure Trek) in Particular! Also Who is missing in this one? My Prediction is you both will love the Ending. My fun fact is when I saw this when it first ran it was in my top 3 Favs up to that point.😀🖖

Duane Chancey

From A Lost in Space fan here...how do you mean callback from Something on LIS....Do you mean The Cave of the Wizards EP. maybe?

Duane Chancey

BEEFCAKE!!!

James Bottas

I might be getting this episode mixed up with 1 that comes later (I have rewatched only a few 1st season episodes since they first aired) but as I recall, the dialog in this episode was poor and reminded me of some of the dialog Roddenberry used in The Cage - not conversational, almost too exposition-like.

Collin Freeman

So true. If he'd shave that beard he'd still look 16.

Dan Krantz

Congratulations you've made it through pretty much the worst of the first season. There is one absolutely awful episode coming up in a few weeks, but aside from that, from this point on the show starts to improve drastically. This episode seems more like a callback to something you might have seen on Lost In Space as opposed to Star Trek. Oh the pain, the pain!

Dan Krantz

The first Troi-less episode if I’m not mistaken. I like this one, but Q episodes are always pretty much a must watch for me.

Glenn Johnson Barnes

Certainly, they could have come up with a better description than "animal things."

Mark Chrisco

Q here, though still toned down comparatively, IMO in this episode feels a lot closer to DeLancie's later character Discord.

CM Waters

I can only think of one Q episode that I didn't like... and this isn't it. This may be the episode where I started thinking that TNG is finding its legs.

Nerd's Gold

If you mean the older 25-year-old Wesley actor, it appears that that guy is 70 years old now. That actor is also named William Wallace, the same name as Mel Gibson's character in the movie Braveheart.

Chtphr Rrr

The Q episodes are some of the few episodes that I liked, and I don't really remember liking this episode. I think I considered Q to be too much of annoying character at this point. However, John de Lancie at least sometimes brings a bit of fun and humor to the show.

Chtphr Rrr

This is one of my favorite Lieutenant Yar moments, when she appears in the "penalty box." Her interaction with Picard is great.

tyranusfan

Teenage years? I'd have skipped those in a heartbeat...

Andreas Schmitt

Hahaha, true :D

Andreas Schmitt

I just wasn't a fan of this one. The set up is pretty good but it just sort of comes to a close. I needed more character interaction in the end to get more of their feelings and connections. I see this as a 100% character driven ep, but does not feel that way after it is done.

Prof Moff

Had they glued a beard to Wil Wheaton's face to play his adult self everyone back then would have thought that's ridiculous. But in 2023 Will Wheaton is in his 50s and that's pretty much what he looks like.

Phillip Grischa

What did you think of the "gifts" Riker had for everyone and their reaction to them? (especially beefcake Wesley lol)

Andreas Schmitt

Q being summoned back by the others for meddling too much was a *VERY* TOS ending, as silly as it is, nice to see a classic style conclusion.

JD Nevesytrof

Nothing against Wil Wheaton, but the producers were being exceptionally generous to Wesley in the aging-up scene. But also, who WOULDN'T like to lose ten years of their life for no reason?

JD Nevesytrof

As others here have commented; it's a Q episode, but not my favourite Q episode. Regardless, John de Lancie absolutely kills it any time he's on the screen as Q so it's still a fun watch.

Ca$hWednesday

This episode is the one that cements the idea that Trelane from TOS may have been a Q. The ending is pretty much the same as The Squire Of Gothos. Q is now definitely a “frenemy” of the Enterprise.

Paul Rymer

I think this is sort of a groundbreaking episode because it's the first indication this show can have recurring villains. And Q suddenly becomes more important because of it. I guess TOS did have Mudd, but that was definitely an outlier.

Joe Concepts

This episode is kinda special to me, not for its content or theme, but because it first aired on my birthday.

Gregory

Q episodes are usually pretty good. Not one of my favorites but it'll do.

KatWithAttitude

So this isn't my favorite Q episode by a long shot, but in a lot of ways it's the perfect Q episode. Whenever I picture Q in my head, it is this version. The Napoleonic persona mocking the ethnically French Picard is just perfect Q shit. His mischievous nature is much more apparent than in the pilot.

Neill Shaughness

Q is baaack! Fans at the time thought about how this echoed Gary Mitchell in Where No Man Has Gone Before but this time Riker had the wisdom to deal with the power. No doubt Roddenberry was trying to underscore how much more humanity was perfected.

Mike Rogers

Wesley gets stabbed and everyone cheers. Do you think this encounter with Q does the character good service?

Steven Johnson

Can’t help but notice the parallels between Riker’s evolution in this episode and the story of Gary Mitchell back in TOS “Where No Man has Gone Before”. How did you think Riker handled the temptation of god-like powers compared to Mitchell. Were you afraid at any point that Riker would meet a similar fate?
